  • I have tried to update the "Books" section in the guidance above, to reflect current separation between works and editions. Hi there. I'm trying to clean up the conflation of "distribution format" and "distributor", and changing the one-of constraint to a value type constraint so we don't have to have an item of property constraint for every conceivable format type (the list was getting really long). I appreciate the efforts, and I think cleaning that up is welcome (and was overdue) ; however I do think it would have been nice to outline your plan here on the talk page beforehand. It may not be necessary to wait to have strong consensus for such things, but leaving others the chance to voice their concerns ahead of major changes is good I think. Also, now, if I want to know what changed, I would have to review a diff of 124 edits (and the diff engine of Wikidata is not exactly great either).
Also, is there a particular reason not to use instance or subclass of (Q30208840) for the value-type constraint (Q21510865)?

You are absolutely right, in hindsight I should have flagged my intentions before getting started, at the time I didn't quite see how big of a mess it was I guess, so I probably underestimated the undertaking. I'll try to improve on that going forward, thanks for being civil about it. As to "particular reason not to use instance or subclass of (Q30208840" ...Nope! absolutely no good reason and I'm kicking myself for forgetting that it existed. Updated now and thanks for the reminder. Things are still not perfect, far from it, but the list is narrowed down considerably and if anyone feels like improving on the work done so far I'll be more than happy. Should the constraint be changed to allow this property to be used on references? edit

When references refer to page numbers, it can be useful to state the publish format as well as the edition in case there are differences between print formats. Should the constraint be changed to allow use on references. For example [1].

The description says that this property can be validly used for specifying the distribution method of an item.

Similar to this concept, can this property be used to specify where/how a good is distributed from? For example, online shop (Q24649023) or shop (Q213441)? Is this valid or is there another property that already does this?

If this is valid, I would be in support of creating another property called "distributed by" with the property description being "the place or general concept that distributes this item". Then, this property would be limited to specifying the physical or digital format which this is distributed. For example, Blu-ray Disc (Q47770) and digital media (Q1076968) but not music streaming (Q15982450) or video streaming (Q104632637).

@Trade: Following up on this, awhile ago, @Moebeus: and I were discussing about not using music streaming (Q15982450), digital distribution (Q269415), or any other item that doesn't indicate an actual format of distribution with this property. For example, music streaming (Q15982450) is not a format that an item is distributed as. Instead, it is a method.

To fix this problem, we could create a property called "distribution method" to put these methods under. This property could include both physical and digital release methods.

Secondly and optionally, we could create a property called "distributed from" with physical or online stores or platforms from which an item is distributed from as values. It could act as the next level down in the supply chain from the primary distributor used in "distributed by". For example, a song could be distributed by (P750) Republic Records (Q4413456) and "distributed from" Spotify (Q689141). Including the first property proposed, it's "distribution method" would be music streaming (Q15982450).

I have proposed a new property Wikidata:Property proposal/Book format for the traditional book sizes quarto, octavo, 12mo, etc. In that discussion, it was pointed out that distribution format (P437) is widely used for this concept (see query) - even though such uses violate the value-type constraint for this property. See also discussion re: Books, above.

Do we want to use P437 for traditional book sizes and change the constraints accordingly, or do we want a separate new property? Your feedback is appreciated! If the latter, please comment at Wikidata:Property proposal/Book format.
