Terms edit

Seems this fits with certain terms, for example Tomahawk (missile) origin is USA. Danrok (talk) 12:34, 21 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

It was thought for creative work, but maybe after changing descriptions, this could also be used for other things. Any thoughts from other Users? --CENNOXX (talk) 14:05, 21 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
Maybe it's better to change the label into "originated from" --دوستدار ایران بزرگ (talk) 05:50, 26 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
I like this idea. Right now, things like names have origins of countries which no longer exist or places which can only be loosely matched to some countries of the past. See for example Rowan (Q18844246) which originates from Arabian Peninsula (Q31945). In general for Wikidata, I would like there to be 'country' properties only when it is very necessary. Countries are temporary things, organisations, people tend to define them as more permanent things, places. --BurritoBazooka (talk) 20:42, 10 October 2015 (UTC)Reply
I'm also in favour or broadening its scope. Pikolas (talk) 02:41, 20 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
The constraint still focus on work (Q386724) but the property is now used on other subjects also. Michiel1972 (talk) 09:40, 8 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Unclear usage for publications edit

How is this supposed to be used for publications? For example, take some research article published at a conference. We now have many possible choices:

  • The address of the publisher
    • Any address? The headquarters address? All addresses?
    • At the time of publication? Or most current?
  • The place where the authors come from
    • What does this mean?
    • All places for all authors?
  • The place where the text has been written
    • How to find out?
  • The place where the conference happened (only applies to publications that have been presented somewhere)
    • Probably not intended, but the only clearly defined place among the options

All of this information seems to be rather meaningless and therefore also useless. Most of it is not defined or at best poorly defined, and therefore not supported by any references. The few things that are factual (e.g., headquarters address to the publisher, work location of each author) are stored in other Wikidata pages already. If there is no meaningful interpretation for this property in the context of publications, then its use on such items should be deprecated. --Markus Krötzsch (talk) 09:46, 3 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

There are many databases using country of the publication and these claims are sourceable, at the very least, working with journals. Strakhov (talk) 21:35, 11 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

+1 it is dick useless. What is it trying to show or demonstrate? Lord Byron wrote books on the continent and they were published in Britian. What was the country of origin? Even if we pick one, what is the value of the statement? We have a place of publication, and that sets up the edition. Why is the conceptual idea needing a country?  — billinghurst sDrewth 04:43, 12 January 2017 (UTC)Reply
I was wondering the same thing, but I suppose it could be the country of first publication. It can have an influence on copyright status. Ghouston (talk) 10:57, 15 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
But there's another property for that, place of publication (P291). I was wondering whether it's correct to say that the country of origin of New Rose Hotel (Q7011334) is Canada (the author is Canadian-American, and lives in Vancouver, but he could have written the short story in Fiji, for all I know). Ghouston (talk) 11:00, 15 January 2021 (UTC)Reply
In that case, the value "Canada" came from enwiki, where en:Template:Infobox short story says that the country is the "home country of author", which I interpret as country of residence, perhaps at the time of first publication. With multiple authors you could have multiple countries? Ghouston (talk) 11:08, 15 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Finer localisation edit

Hello,

I am using or considering using this property for archeological items, but I would often require a sort of "Made in" property that could also link to a region, a city, a place or maybe even a particular workshop. Do we have something appropriate for the purpose?

thank you very much! Rama (talk) 08:18, 5 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hello @Rama: I am not sure, but perhaps location of creation (P1071) would suit your needs. Regards --NicoScribe (talk) 16:17, 5 June 2017 (UTC)Reply

Rename to "origin place"? edit

I think this property shouldn't be restricted to countries, but to any place. There's many items that could use the renamed property, like viruses or software attacks:

Occupied Territory as Country of Origin edit

Hi,

Hopefully this is the right place to discuss this.

A Value Type Constraint appears when Country of Origin is selected to be a Occupied Territory. Example: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q96146434

As these periods can have significant impact on cultural production, Country of Origin should also include occupied territory (https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q2577883) and/or former administrative territorial entity (https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19953632), especially if the occupation involves an entire nation/country.

A key example would be Late Spring (Q743203) the movie, that was made during the Allied occupation of Japan and had to work within the censorship rules of the Allied Countries. The movie also has thematic elements dealing with the occupation in the background. As such, this movie is a product of and influenced by the occupation.

Thank You for this property! Please let me know if you feel any conflicts may arise by adding the above.

--Wallacegromit1 (talk) 19:47, 8 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

I agree with using "historical state" but not with occupation of Japan (Q696251). This seems to me occupation (action) or historical period (time range) but not a territorial entity. It's like Anschluss (Q154681). --Infovarius (talk) 18:13, 10 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Renaming edit

@Wallacegromit1, Tinker Bell , Infovarius :, et al.

After accepting that the location does not necessarily have to be a country, I reiterate that we should change the name.

I suggest two first names. Please, add more suggestions and/or vote. Thanks. Amadalvarez (talk) 20:53, 4 May 2021 (UTC):Reply

place of origin. Based on present "country of origin", but more flexible.

original location. Valid for the original location where the item "was born" / "comes from", as now. But also where the item "was originally located". It applies specially to works of art to indicate the place where it was originally placed. For example: Parthenon Frieze (Q3087894) is originally from Athens (not UK) & Luxor Obelisk (Q1503331) from Egypt (or Luxor), not France or Paris.

@Jura1: Do you really understand the scope of the change ?. I'm not proposing to accept under this property things different that already are. I'm just proposing "adjust the name" to one reality that already are. The previous list are samples that "have this property" and its value is not exactly a "country", but a different dimension of location or point, from a continent to a church. It's just a change of one word (country → place) to adjust the definition to a different scale from these that property was created.
Answering to your new question: May be. However, most of them doesn't fit in its constraints to use indigenous to (P2341).

  • I don't think you followed the explanation about "country of origin" for works. That currently some values are incorrect, doesn't mean one should change the label. Not sure why P2341 removed food from the type constraint (despite there being a sample with sushi). Seems something that can be fine-tuned there. --- Jura 06:23, 12 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
Dear, @Jura1:. Please ping me when you answer me. Helps to reduce delays in responses. Thanks.
I'm not sure I understand your answer. I have no interest in whether or not the food should be covered by P4321. My request is not about the products that may or may not have the P495. It is related to the geographical scope to be included as a value, and this does affect the name of the P495.
P495 may contain, and contains, values that are not a "country" without being a mistake; they may be a region, a city, or a continent, as I have shown. That is why I am asking to change the name.
"Indigenous to" is not the same as "country of origin"; if they were, we could merge both properties. But they are not. The Luxor Obelisk (Q1503331) is not "indigenous" to Luxor, but its "origin" is Luxor, which is not a country, but a city. Therefore, we do not mix the P4321 in this debate, simply to try to avoid the name change requested.
You can also appreciate that I am not the only one who supports the request. I beg you to join in with your support as well. Thanks. Amadalvarez (talk) 16:31, 19 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
  • Maybe other users have usecases not yet covered by existing properties. In any case, "country of origin" works for films, but "place of origin" wont work any more. --- Jura 13:54, 16 August 2021 (UTC)Reply
