ARK

Why aren't we using the ARK, e.g. ark:/13960/t48p5w670? That's the only identifier supposed to be permanent, as far as I know. --Nemo 09:02, 23 August 2013 (UTC)

The problem with ARKs is that you will be creating a new identifier for the book that no one else knows about - so it won't be initially useful for sharing, until others incorporate YOUR ARK into their data. There is not reason NOT to mint an ARK, but it only makes sense if there is a strategy to proliferate it to other book resources. And AFAIK the ARK is no more or less permanent than other identifiers, like DOIs or handles or ISBNs. It is dependent on the services that resolve it, as are other identifiers. Sure, of course I mean the only permanent archive.org internal identifier. The item identifier is even less meaningful, externally. I don't know if a direct link is really needed (and if it is they probably have some service to redirect quickly), but linking with the ARK is very easy: [1]. --Nemo 09:26, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

Drop the single value constraint (Q19474404)?

Should we drop the single-value constraint (Q19474404)? The ID isn't really unique. Currently 139 violations here of which I do not know if they are actually mistakes. • For some books, there seem to be plenty of scanned exemplars at IA and I don't really see an advantage of including some, but not others. When pages are missing in one, it can help having another one to check. --- Jura 11:58, 29 August 2020 (UTC)
• I think having the single value constraint implies something about the Internet Archive identifier that is not true. What I have found in practice is that IA identifiers can correspond to multiple things, including both a scanned batch of pages encompassing many books and an individual book in that batch. Both identifiers of "00bori" and "books_neverscan_session_005" correspond to the edition via common ISBNs. So to say as a rule that IA identifiers have a single value constraint seems false as there are many exceptions to the rule that are not just one-off flukes. Title page

Many books open at the title page on Internet Archive. Where is this stored? It's info that's generally missing at files imported to Commons. We are discussing at Commons how to use properties to improve the situation there (see c:Template_talk:Book). @Jarekt: --- Jura 08:29, 21 July 2020 (UTC)

Constraints on suitable articles should be removed

As the Internet Archive is set up to to store all kinds of information, it seems unwise to have a type constraint on the items it can be used on. Already the list is long, and to cover all options will need to be much longer, for example event (Q1656682) which often have documentation, whether it be programmes, proceedings or flyers. inventory number

I added inventory number (P217) to the list of allowed properties... the intention is to use it in combination with collection (P195) to store the library call number (barcode, not shelf number) of the specific physical object that the scan was of. This is sometimes in the Internet Archive metadata, but is usually visible in the scan itself. The point is to connect various scans of the same physical book, to aid in then deconvolving scans of different editions that are intermingled under the same library database entry. The Library of Congress is a particular source of this.... if a "later copy" received by the Library only differed in date and/or publisher, but wasn't explicitly a "new edition", they just catalog it under the original as a second copy with no other indication it's not the same.

The World Factbook 1982 (Q19102705) is an example where it's helpful.... the single physical copy at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign (30112071778804) has 2 scans on HathiTrust (one from Google, one from the Internet Archive, with different Handle IDs) that are both also available on Google Books (with 2 more IDs), as well as two duplicate copies at the Internet Archive (with 2 different Internet Archive IDs, and two different ARKs), and well as a scan by the Open Content Alliance (with another Handle ID), making a total of 8 different identifiers all pointing at scans of the same physical book.
