O líder indígena Paulinho Paiakan morreu na madrugada desta quarta (17). O cacique de 67 anos estava internado no Hospital Regional Público do Araguaia, no Pará. Ele era um defensor dos direitos indígenas e, na década de 80, foi uma voz a favor da demarcação de terras indígenas. Já em 1998, foi condenado a seis anos de prisão por estupro, pena que foi cumprida em parte em sua aldeia. (Brazilian Portuguese)

Reacting to his death on Wednesday at a hospital in Pará, the Brazilian Indigenous Peoples' Association (Apib) described Paiakan as a "father, leader and warrior" for indigenous peoples and the environment. (English)

Mr. Paiakan died on June 17 in a hospital in Redenção, in Brazil’s Para State. He was 67. The cause was Covid-19, his daughter Maial said. (English)
