Before he moved to Switzerland in 1924, Bührle was a member of the right-wing paramilitary group Freikorps, and personally involved in the bloody suppression of the anti-monarchist November Revolution that was triggered by Germany's military defeat in World War I (English)

Bührle, who went to Oerlikon from Germany to run the company for its German owners in 1924, had proved that he knew as much about business as about guns. When he took over, Oerlikon was a machine-tool company with few tools, no liquid assets, a work force of 80, and no orders. Biihrle looked around for a new product, bought the patents on a 20-mm. cannon. Within five years, orders for it were pouring in from China, Finland, Japan and South America. By 1936, Bührle bought up all the stock in the company. (English)

The connections between Bührle and the Kunsthaus date back to 1940, when Bührle became a member of its board of trustees. He funded an earlier extension, completed in 1958. A bust and plaque at the entrance of an exhibition hall named after him honor his contribution.Now, 203 artworks belonging to the Foundation E. G. Bührle Collection, an organization set up by the industrialist’s family after his death, have entered the Kunsthaus collection on a 20-year loan. About 170 are on show in the new extension. (English)
