Broadcasting, broadcasters and radio stations edit

Due to the difference between Wikidata phase 1 (interwiki links) and phase 2 (unambiguous terms) this item mixed broadcasting, broadcasters and radio stations. I've started to separate the terms. --Kolja21 (talk) 01:37, 2 December 2013 (UTC)Reply

List of terminology edit

language used (P2936) or language of work or name (P407) edit

There are 28229 direct instances of this class, 1181 with 'language used' property, 1077 with 'language of work' and 156 with both (SparQL). Looks like a confusion. If I'm not mistaken, every radiostation has well-defined language, just like books, movies, TV channels, newspapers etc. I think 'language of work' feels more natural than 'widely used' property. There is even a constraint stating television channel (Q2001305) can't have 'language used' property. Podbrushkin (talk) 18:22, 24 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Oddly enough, there is no directly relevant WikiProject on Wikidata (like WikiProject Media (Q14942898)). In my opinion, it is clear from the statistics, that the use of both properties is almost equal. But same query with television station (Q1616075) indicates the prevalence of language used (P2936). language used (P2936) seems more appropriate to me, as radio station (Q14350) isn't any kind of thing of work. But there is a "broadcasting language" at language of work or name (P407).
I'll try to link to this discussion from other talks to get more feedback.
Anyway, it would be certainly useful to unify it in some way and apply the resulting consensus to television station (Q1616075) items as well. Jklamo (talk) 19:51, 24 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Isn't Wikidata:WikiProject_Broadcasting directly relevant?
What classes use 'language used' property: SparQL. Almost all of them are from geography, they use this property because it's 'widely used' as stated in the description and value is derived from practice, and radio station simply has a language just like a book or something.
Currently radio station item is actually used for radio channel (Q25582589)'s, and not for organizations as it should be. I doubt BBC One, BBC Two etc are distinct organizations - those are radio channels actually, just like TV channels, and radio channel is-a work (even though current wd hierarchy doesn't represent it), so P407 is applicable. And even if we assume this 'radio station' item is used as it should be, language of organizations is still usually stated in P407: SparQL. Podbrushkin (talk) 07:28, 25 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
