About edit

This page hosts a session proposal to the Second UN World Data Forum held on 22-24 October 2018 in Dubai. It was submitted by the deadline of 31 January 2018. I was notified of its receipt and identifier (P.1389) by February 7, along with a note that acceptance notifications are to be expected by mid-April.

Session proposal edit

The session proposals had to be submitted via a Google form, which asked for some personal and logistical information, along with the more content-oriented information, for which my responses are listed below.

Relevance to UNWDF Thematic Area
TA 2. Innovations and synergies across data ecosystems: Bringing data sources together and creating an enabling environment for the integration and use of non-traditional data sources
Session title
Wikidata as a FAIR bridge across data domains
Session description - please include a short description of the proposed session including main topics covered and target audience
Wikidata is a multilingual knowledge base. Like its sister Wikipedia, it is free and open, spans across all domains of knowledge and can be collaboratively edited by anyone. About 18000 humans do this every month, along with several hundred automated tools. Unlike its sister, Wikidata contains structured data that is Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable (FAIR), in the public domain and can be queried via a SPARQL endpoint.
This session will consist of three main parts: In the first part (ca. 20 min), I will provide an overview of Wikidata, on how it integrates data across domains and languages and on how it can be used to explore knowledge and knowledge gaps. In doing so, I will focus on several usage examples: (i) the Sustainable Development Goals, (ii) paintings, (iii) scholarly publications, (iv) politicians.
In the second part (ca. 30 min), the audience will be invited to get their hands on Wikidata by trying to get information out of and into it, both within and outside their domains of expertise. To make this most fruitful, participants are encouraged to bring their laptops or other mobile device on which they are comfortable typing.
The remainder of the session is intended for Q & A and open discussion.
The session is to be given on the basis of https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Daniel_Mietchen/UNWDF-2018 ,
and participants are encouraged to check out that page in advance of the event for further details.
Main expected outcome and follow-up from the session
Participants are expected to leave the session with a better understanding of how Wikidata can help integrate data across domains and languages, as well as with some ideas on how it might fit into their own activities.
Session format - please describe the suggested format for the proposed session, including the desired IT requirements and room setup. (e.g., mini workshops, data labs, hackathon-style/innovation challenges, and other session formats)
The format will be a presentation combined with a mini-workshop. IT requirements: LAN for presenter, WiFi for everyone else. Room setup depends: classroom or U-shaped table arrangements, power outlets for at least half of the participants, who are expected to bring their laptops.
