User:Lucas Werkmeister (WMDE)/Wikimania 2018/Wikidata Query Service – Advanced Workshop

Abstract

edit

The Wikidata Query Service is the primary way to access, use and combine Wikidata’s data, from simple questions like “which countries have a female head of government?” to complicated lists like “cities with mayors whose first name is the name of a larger city”. This workshop is for users who are already somewhat familiar with the query service, but are unsure where to go from there. It will introduce advanced concepts of the SPARQL query language (e. g. filtering, expressions, and grouping) and also give tips on optimizing your queries to avoid timeouts. Spreading this kind of advanced knowledge throughout the Wikidata and Wikimedia community is important not only to facilitate access to Wikidata’s data, but also because SPARQL queries are an important quality control mechanism to ensure that this knowledge base which provides data for virtually all Wikimedia projects (to varying degrees) remains a high-quality and trustworthy source of information.
