editWatercolours illustrating Captain Cook's last voyage
editWatercolours illustrating Captain Cook's last voyage, ca. 1773-1784 (Q111593103) and its parts. Based on records at SLNSW. Fonds contains 6 volumes (previously one vol., rebound in 1986), containing items that are instances of both watercolour-painting and archive-item. And those paintings were the bases for derived engravings which are also museum items. See, for example all the copies of "Poulaho, King of the Friendly Islands, drinking Kava" G-search. ⁓ Pelagic ( messages )
To Do maybe
editMain Subject on portraits
editI was looking for paintings of James Cook using main subject (P921) and depicts (P180) [with "(wdt:P31/(wdt:279*)) wd:Q3305213" for "instance of (subclass of) painting"]. Found the Webber Te Papa portrait and added a P921. Then noticed the Commons file page is a member of c:Wikidata:WikiProject sum of all paintings/Portraits without main subject.
Things I've done
editStatue of Trim, Matthew Flinders' cat
edit"Trim (1996)" (Q111596931) "statue of Matthew Flinders' cat by John Cornwell". We had an item for the cat Trim (Q3500553), but not the statue. Happily, we have an item for the artist also, thanks to his w:en article. It would be nice to have items for all public statuary, similar to Sum of All Paintings. For Australia, copyright law has FOP provision that is Commons-compatible, and Commons already has several photographs of the Trim statue. I took some recently, but they mightn't be sufficiently different from what's there to bother uploading. Dictionary of Sydney has items for many public statues in the inner city, but not this one. Maybe it's too new.
I've put the label and description in plain-text above, because they could get changed. Guess I could subst: the P and Q templates instead.
We should use lexemes, not labels, to construct sentences: something I should write about in more depth. These constructions are interesting nonetheless:
- Trim (1996), a statue made of bronze by John Cornwell that depicts Trim, Matthew Flinders' pet and ship's cat. [Yes, I marked the possessive apostrophe with a link. I would normally write "a bronze statue" but then the adjective splits the predicate "a statue".]
- Q111596931 P31 Q179700; P170 Q108311164; P180 Q3500553; P186 Q34095. Q3500553 P127 Q219895; P31 Q2961496.
- Trim the cat statue, Sydney (Q111596931)instance of (P31)statue (Q179700); creator (P170)John Cornwell (Q108311164); depicts (P180)Trim (Q3500553); made from material (P186)bronze (Q34095). etc.
Funny how writing about a single data-item for a statue ties into other themes.
