As you can read in the introduction to wikidata, it is a CC0 resource. That means that all content within it are considered to be completely in the public domain. Hence content can be used by anyone including public, private, academic, and commercial interests to do whatever they want. There is no way to add different (e.g. academic only) licenses to parts of wikidata content, it is all CC0. For some lengthy arguments about why we (the gene wiki people that operate this and related bots) and others in the scientific community think this is a good thing (and some that do not), please see discussion and links on this thread about how to include content from the OBO Foundry in Wikidata.

The purpose of this article is to record the agreements established with data providers to bring content into the wikidata world - especially where the underlying databases are not entirely in the public domain.

Templates for agreements edit

Here is a candidate template for wikidata inclusion based on the text created for Wikimedia commons rights release

"I hereby affirm that I, [name] or [represent copyright holder's name], the creator and/or sole owner of the exclusive copyright of the data as shown here: [web page of the content].

By 'data' I mean: [the following enumerated set of fields or other structures in this database] or [the database in its entirety]

I agree to publish the above-mentioned data in Wikidata and thus for it to be bound by its license as stated in the introduction to wikidata.

I acknowledge that by doing so I grant anyone the right to use the work, even in a commercial product or otherwise, and to modify it according to their needs, provided that they abide by the terms of the license and any other applicable laws.

I am aware that this agreement is not limited to Wikidata or related sites.

I am aware that the copyright holder always retains ownership of the copyright. Modifications others make to the work will not be claimed to have been made by the copyright holder.

I acknowledge that I cannot withdraw this agreement, and that the content may or may not be kept permanently on Wikidata.

[Sender's name]

[Sender's authority (if applicable. E.g. "Copyright holder", "Director", "Appointed representative of", etc.)]

[Date]"

Human Disease Ontology (DO) edit

The Human Disease Ontology (DO) is licensed under CC-BY 3.0. The intent of DO's licensing choice is to promote open sharing and adaption of the DO, as an ontology of human diseases, with attribution to the DO project. As a project and resource to the community, we decided to import DO's terms, term related data and class hierarchy into Wikidata. The Disease Ontology object in Wikidata (Q5282129) provides attribution to the DO project for the related DO information loaded into Wikidata. As Principal Investigator of the DO project, I (User:Lschriml) freely provide the content of DO for use and distribution to the Wikidata project without restrictions of attribution for the use of each term, and it's relate information, in the ontology. The Disease Ontology was created to be a community resource. The Wikidata and related projects, enable the content of DO to be used without restriction, thus serving the greater good of the community.

UniProt edit

Currently content is being imported from UniProt following an email exchange with their HelpDesk indicating their agreement with the usage by the ProteinBoxBot. This agreement is currently in the process of being formalized to specify which portions of the UniProt knowledge base are suitable for inclusion in Wikidata.
