Before you begin edit
First, think about how many times the property will be used. If the property will be used less than 100 times, it probably shouldn't be added.[1]
Next, consider whether statements that would use the property could be implemented using a more general property with one or more qualifiers. For example, there's no need for a "papacy began" property because the beginning of a pope's tenure can be stated using the property position held (P39) with the qualifier start time (P580), like so: Pope Francis (Q450675)position held (P39)pope (Q19546)
Then, check whether the property already exists or has been proposed before. Methods for finding existing properties are listed in Wikidata:Properties § Finding properties. There are a few places to look for proposals:
- Pending proposals
- All active proposals
- Archived proposals (searchable)
Finally, if you're unsure about whether to propose a new property, ask for input from other editors on the talk page of a relevant WikiProject or property proposal topic (e.g., Wikidata talk:Property proposal/Generic).
