Slovak edit
Hi, thank you for contributions of your robot.... Can you change description for Slovak language ? Correct one is: kategória projektov Wikimedia. I try to find source of this mistake, but without success due lack of my technical abilities :)--Kelovy (talk) 16:41, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
- @Kelovy: Sure, I just fixed my bot. I copied it from MediaWiki:Gadget-autoEdit.js. Please report the error in that talkpage too. (And check other Slovak translations in autoedit, perhaps there are more errors). Emijrp (talk) 16:55, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
- That is the site I was looking for :) Thank you so much for your help ! --Kelovy (talk) 21:55, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
Slow down your bot please edit

Contribution to your bot edit
Hi, is it possible to add language to your bot. I am able to translate into French. What is the easiest way to add this language? Should I clon your git repo and translate all the messages in French and then send you a pull request? If so, could you tell me what files I have to modify? Thank you in advance. Pamputt (talk) 18:36, 7 March 2017 (UTC)
- @Pamputt: Hello! The scripts for films, paintings and common descriptions have French translations, so they don't need changes by now. The only script that needs a translation is human.descriptions.py (yes, clone and make a pull request). You will have to add French translations for nationalities (~200) and occupations (~50). It will take you a few hours or days to complete, but it's worth it because the bot will add hundred of thousands of descriptions for biographies after that. Thanks for your interest. Emijrp (talk) 19:54, 7 March 2017 (UTC)
- Hi Emijrp, I have finished to translate "human.descriptions.py" and I created a pull request :D on your github repository. Pamputt (talk) 19:57, 8 March 2017 (UTC)
Village in China edit
Hi! If you are ever going to run your bot again on those items that are "village in China", then change the Finnish description to "kylä Kiinassa". The current description "kiinalainen kylä" means "a Chinese village", which of course, is not exactly the same thing. Not that important, but just to let you know. :) Stryn (talk) 14:57, 19 March 2017 (UTC)
- @Stryn: Thanks for the notice. I have fixed the script and from now it will add the new translation. Emijrp (talk) 21:32, 19 March 2017 (UTC)
Wikimedia Category edit
Hello, you can add Turkish description ?
Like This:
English: "Wikimedia Category"
Turkish: "Vikimedya kategorisi"
Thanks. BirOKadarSuper (talk) 19:57, 22 March 2017 (UTC)
- @BirOKadarSuper: Of course, I will add it to the bot for the next run. Can you please add Turkish translations for Wikimedia template (Q11266439), Wikinews article (Q17633526) and Wikimedia list article (Q13406463)? Thanks. Emijrp (talk) 19:42, 22 March 2017 (UTC)

Please. Can your bot add descreptions for Tajiki : гурӯҳи Викимедиа for "Wikimedia category" --Тоҷек/ToJack (talk) 17:17, 1 May 2017 (UTC)
- @ToJack: I just added it to the code. The bot will add them in the next run. Thanks. Emijrp (talk) 11:03, 29 May 2017 (UTC)
bn translation edit
Hi, i would like to translate those script for Bengali (bn). How can i do that? --Aftabuzzaman (talk) 16:06, 2 May 2017 (UTC)
- @Aftabuzzaman: I did the same with hebrew, so basically there are many scripts who do different actions. There is "human.descriptions.py" which is the most usefull. So exmaples:
There is
'en': { 'male': 'Afghan', 'female': 'Afghan' },
So if you see a line like this, just do this:
'en': { 'male': 'Afghan', 'female': 'Afghan' }, 'bn': { 'male': 'Bengali for an Afghan man', 'female': 'Bengali for an Afghan woman' },
Then there are occupations (translationsOccupations):
'en': { 'male': '~ actor', 'female': '~ actress' },
So if you see a line like this, just do this:
'en': { 'male': '~ actor', 'female': '~ actress' }, 'bn': { 'male': '~ actor in bengali', 'female': '~ actress in bengali' },
labels for P31 <list> edit
Before applying "is a list" labels we must check if an item misses any other meaningful property, especially subclass of (P279).
I don't know how many edits like this were done. d1g (talk) 21:24, 13 May 2017 (UTC)
Dups ? edit
When creating Q29987722, I wonder if your bot should have detected Q15793917 which has the same label in one language. I think PetScan would have done that.
--- Jura 17:45, 23 May 2017 (UTC)
- Same with Q30126772 ?
--- Jura 17:34, 7 June 2017 (UTC)
- In this case I don't know what it was wrong, because when the bot did the check, two labels (pl and nl) existed. Emijrp (talk) 11:10, 9 June 2017 (UTC)
Need Help! edit
Hey. You might remember me from adding hebrew to your bot code. I really need your help. We have a lot of wrong descriptions in hebrew and I was wondering if you could run your bot and fix them. Thanks.--Mikey641 (talk) 11:57, 27 May 2017 (UTC)
- Hello @Mikey641:. Can you provide some examples, so I can see how hard is the task? Emijrp (talk) 11:34, 29 May 2017 (UTC)
- Uri Gottlieb (Q6983482) herbew: Israeli host, english:Israeli comedian
- Guy Arieli (Q6782383) herbew: Israeli host, english:Israeli actor
- There are many others not related to hosts. I don't think it is that complicated (for you at least) the bot needs to go through all items with Q5:p31 + hebrew description + english description, and then do what it usually does, translate the english into hebrew.--Mikey641 (talk) 11:49, 29 May 2017 (UTC)
- I think that it may produce new errors. Launching a bot to overwrite all Hebrew descriptions for humans, it is a risky task. I think there are many items with customized Hebrew descriptions added by hand that would be automatically overwritten. Emijrp (talk) 11:10, 30 May 2017 (UTC)
Need your attention edit
Hi Emijrp, please merge this pull request. Then update your bot script with this translation and run your script to add bengali (bn) description. It took 4 hours to complete this translation. I will be very happy if you do this. Thank you --Aftabuzzaman (talk) 21:36, 29 May 2017 (UTC)
- @Aftabuzzaman: Hello and thanks for your work. I am glad you helped with your language. I will merge the code tomorrow and launch the bot in a few days. A few weeks ago we discovered some mistakes in Arabic translations and an user was fixing them (I have to merge his changes too). I ask you to please double check your Bengali translations tomorrow again, when your eyes are relaxed. I am sure you will find some errors. We need to be 99.9% sure, because fixing errors after running the bot is boring. Emijrp (talk) 22:02, 29 May 2017 (UTC)

- Hi, sorry for disturbing again. Please merge this small correction. There is nothing wrong with current translation, but
চীনের একটি গ্রাম
(a village of china) sound much better than "চীনের গ্রাম" (village of china) in bengali. You don't have fix/replace the current translation right now, But in future if you run the bot to add some other language for village of china then you may consider to do. --Aftabuzzaman (talk) 11:51, 1 July 2017 (UTC)- Hi, Please merge this pull request then update your bot's script and restart your bot (for adding bn translation with other 13 languages) Thanks. --Aftabuzzaman (talk) 00:18, 17 July 2017 (UTC)

How does this bot work? edit
Hey, Emijrp, would you mind giving me a hint how edits like these are exactly created? I'm just asking out of mere curiosity or amazement since I just couln't figure out how your bot works. So I'd be really happy to receive your answer. In case you want to answer – which I would appreciate of course –, could you please ping me? Thans a lot in advance! I'm just not here on Wikidata that often... Best--Erdic (talk) 04:08, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
- @Erdic: Hello, it is "easy" if you know Python. The bot gets a list of all items which instance of (P31) is female given name (Q11879590). Using a list of translations, it fills the missing languages, and save it. If you want a more techy explanation, you can see the code. Emijrp (talk) 07:43, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you very, very much for your quick reaction! Though I must admit that I'm still not quite sure whether I've understood how it works. Considering e. g. the item I linked above: Where does the bot exactly get the list of translations from and how does it finally make the right assignments? Sorry for my technical ignorance, but I'm really fascinated! :-) Greetings--Erdic (talk) 09:06, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
- Take a look at the source code, and search for "translations". You'll understand everything. XXN, 22:00, 5 June 2017 (UTC)

Film descriptions improving/fixing needed edit
@Emijrp, I just saw in Wikidata:WikiProject_Movies/Tools#Improve_descriptions that project members have found some types of descriptions which needs to be improved, especially English description "film" and Italian description "film del diretto da" (this seems to be completely wrong). AFAIK for the task related to film items currently your bot does not overwrite descriptions. Could you add the function to overwrite 'en' & 'it' descriptions (temporary, for this task) and to run one-time the bot through the results returned by those queries? At the time of writing this message, there was 1281 (en) + 762 (it) items returned by queries. XXN, 22:00, 5 June 2017 (UTC)
- I've provided Romanian description patterns for bot code, check git.
- If you plan to modify the code for the case mentioned above, I've found also some Romanian descriptions to overwrite. Most of the items from the result of the following query (those very short, like "
film
" and "film, ~YEAR~
") can be safely overwritten with a better description (the pattern you are using):
SELECT DISTINCT ?item ?itemLabel ?itemDescription
{
?item wdt:P31 wd:Q11424 .
FILTER EXISTS { ?item schema:description ?itemDescription filter (lang(?itemDescription) = "ro") . }
SERVICE wikibase:label { bd:serviceParam wikibase:language "ro,en,fr"}
}
LIMIT 2000
- Hello XXN. I have merged your pull request, but I still have to code the Romanian overwriting part, and add support for Hungarian descriptions. I will do it ASAP. Thanks. Emijrp (talk) 09:29, 7 June 2017 (UTC)

- @Yair rand: It is the ID for Earth in Carl Sagan Cosmos Enciclopedia Galactica episode. As that catalogue doesn't exist as a property to be added in the "Identifiers" section, I added it as an alias. Emijrp (talk) 05:15, 5 July 2017 (UTC)

Aliases on given name edit
Hi Emijrp,
Please avoid creating aliases on given name items. This tends to confuse users as each spelling gets a separate item.
--- Jura 17:42, 9 July 2017 (UTC)
- @Jura1: Can you provide an example? Emijrp (talk) 17:46, 9 July 2017 (UTC)
- alias and Q11464766.
--- Jura 17:53, 9 July 2017 (UTC)
- alias and Q11464766.
- Nádia (Q21286038) in pt: has a redirect Nadia->Nádia. Emijrp (talk) 17:59, 9 July 2017 (UTC)
@Jura1: By the way, there is no difference between Nádia (female name in Portuguese) and Nadia (female name in Spanish). Why did you split it creating two different items? Emijrp (talk) 18:09, 9 July 2017 (UTC)
- It's the way it's being done for names, see Wikidata:WikiProject Names. It allows to differentiate persons who use one spelling from those who use the other. Obviously, any Wikipedia can re-combine or differentiate as they prefer.
--- Jura 18:21, 9 July 2017 (UTC)

- What source states that Nádia is different to Nadia? I am Spanish and I don't think they are different. Even if they were, I would find useful a "Nadia" alias in Nádia item, that way the search engine will show me both items. I think you are creating duplicates without proper sources. Emijrp (talk) 18:35, 9 July 2017 (UTC) (I have stopped the bot, btw)
- https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/N%C3%A1dia sees it as two different names as well. I think most other alias you are adding are fine. If you could just skip name items.

- @Jura1: given name (Q202444), female given name (Q11879590), male given name (Q12308941), family name (Q101352), proper noun (Q147276), anything else? Emijrp (talk) 23:03, 9 July 2017 (UTC)
- Didn't know about the last one, but there is also unisex given name (Q3409032) and name (Q82799).
- male given name (Q12308941), family name (Q101352) are probably the most frequent.

Diacritics edit
Hey Emijrp, I am wondering what the use of diacritics-less aliases for persons with diacritics in their regular name is. I see your bot systematically adding those for es and lately also for en. Thanks and regards, MisterSynergy (talk) 20:56, 14 July 2017 (UTC)
- @MisterSynergy: Hello. It helps to find that items in the search engine. More info here and here. Emijrp (talk) 22:45, 14 July 2017 (UTC)
- I thought from experience and other discussions that we have robust fuzzy search functionality anyway, so that diacritics don’t matter during searches anyway. External search engines definitely have this as well. —MisterSynergy (talk) 05:25, 15 July 2017 (UTC)
- @MisterSynergy:, when editing an item (adding a value to a property), try to type an item name which doesn't have a non-diacritic alias. It won't be shown in the dropdown. The same happens in search engine dropdown. Emijrp (talk) 08:13, 15 July 2017 (UTC)
- Wouldn’t it be better to request a technical solution for that problem via phabricator? You would otherwise have to add aliases of non-ASCII labels for each and every language. It doubt that this is good practice. —MisterSynergy (talk) 19:03, 16 July 2017 (UTC)
- I think all languages fallback to English, so in theory this would work adding non-Unicode aliases just for English. I am adding it to Spanish too because I am Spaniard and it is a common practice to add accent-free aliases for my language. Emijrp (talk) 19:07, 16 July 2017 (UTC)
- There is now phab:T170775. Let’s see if there will be a reaction by the developers at all, and if so what they say… Regards, and happy editing! —MisterSynergy (talk) 21:20, 16 July 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks for filing a bug though I think that they won't add this feature. It is a long-term issue in Wikipedia and along the years people created unicode-free redirects to solve it. In the comment section above this one, you can see one example for what an automatic global feature for all items like the one you proposed isn't a good solution. Emijrp (talk) 07:58, 17 July 2017 (UTC)
Emijrpbot 2 edit
Can you please postpone your bot tasks for at least one week? We are trying to get the dispatch lag down, but your bot is editing at 134 edits per minute. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 09:58, 20 July 2017 (UTC)
- @Sjoerddebruin: Done. Nobody sees here a lack of server resources? This project needs many bots to keep items updated, and it is constantly getting bottlenecks. Emijrp (talk) 10:15, 20 July 2017 (UTC)
- I agree, but please see Wikidata:Bots. It's just respectful not to edit on such a high rate. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 10:22, 20 July 2017 (UTC)

Skip items with enwiki links? edit
Hi Emijrp,
To reduce the impact on the enwiki job queue, maybe the bot could skip items with sitelinks to enwiki? If it doesn't work, at least, it would help clear some of the mystery around the job queue.
--- Jura 17:20, 29 July 2017 (UTC)

Potential descriptions for human-descriptions bot edit
Hi. I began recently to work on the list of Romanian demonyms for your human-descriptions bot. Maybe it's strange, but for Romanian it's not something trivial to compile a complete and correct list of demonyms:D
Some 20-30 values are unknown/uncofirmed by real realiable dictionaries and they can't be added for now. Simultaneously I began to work on the Russian translations, and there also exists a similar problem for some 5 countries. Do you accept for this bot incomplete translation arrays? I'll have to build a python script for updating automatically the dictionary from such tables, because I'm too lazy to introduce all these entries manually :) --XXN, 20:41, 1 August 2017 (UTC)
- Hello @XXN:. I have just added a patch to accept incomplete nationality arrays, so it should work fine. Anyway, I think there are two options: 1) skip missing nationalities or 2) follow this approach (Scriitori din Bangladesh, etc). Please, when sending your pull-request, add this in missing nationalities 'ro': { 'male': 'UNKNOWN', 'female': 'UNKNOWN' }, so it is easy to spot in the code where are missing data. Thank you for your work, and I think that you could run this bot yourself. It is good that other users get familiar with my code. Emijrp (talk) 21:27, 1 August 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you. Then I'll continue in my free time to work on this, and I hope in the next days I'll submit a pull request with these translations. --XXN, 18:02, 2 August 2017 (UTC)
- For Romanian done, but... --XXN, 22:26, 6 August 2017 (UTC)
- @XXN: But... What? Please add a # before every "'ro': { 'male': 'UNKNOWN', 'female': 'UNKNOWN' }," line so it is commented and ignored by bot. Emijrp (talk) 12:31, 7 August 2017 (UTC)
- For the Occupations dict I worked directly in script dictionary and it's ok, but for nationalities I worked in external tables and from them I constructed another dict with only RO translations. Will you succeed to patch automatically the new dict with these translations into your script? At the momment I have some problems with this (Python 2.x+Windows+unicode...) and I didn't succeeded yet to write a script for merging these additions automatically in a acceptable way. The "#" has to be added after these changes will be merged, as this may cause now some issues if a merger script will be let to read a dictionary with missing (commented) values for some dict keys. I may try again later (today or in next days) to see if I'll succeed to repair/re-write my dict_merger script, and depending on this I'll think how to proceed with the RU translations. --XXN, 13:10, 7 August 2017 (UTC)
- Pull request sent (with a related notice). --XXN, 11:34, 8 August 2017 (UTC)

Bot duplicating label as alias edit
See [4] - your bot added an alias that's the same as the label, which isn't particularly helpful. Please could you check for this before the bot edits? Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 20:51, 5 September 2017 (UTC)
- The i in Victor is different ;-). Emijrp (talk) 21:10, 5 September 2017 (UTC)
- Aah, I hadn't spotted that. :-) Still, it means it shows up oddly as an alternative name at en:Víctor M. Blanco Telescope. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 21:34, 5 September 2017 (UTC)
- @Mike Peel: You are right. I think infoboxes shouldn't show as alternative names a name with accents variations. The alias field works as redirects[5] making easier to find items. Other possible aliases are "Víctor Manuel Blanco Telescope" and "Víctor Blanco Telescope", they are useful for the search engine here in Wikidata, but redundant in the infobox. Emijrp (talk) 21:40, 5 September 2017 (UTC)
- OK, thanks. I'll look into migrating to using short name (P1813), which might be more appropriate in that case. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 22:14, 5 September 2017 (UTC)

Other possible aliases are "Víctor Manuel Blanco Telescope" and "Víctor Blanco Telescope", they are useful for the search engine here in Wikidata, but redundant in the infobox. Emijrpbot error edit
Hello! I found an error of your bot on this diff (2017-03-19).
Your bot added french description with "joueuse de rugby sud-africain" but sex or gender (P21) was male (Q6581097) and this means description should be "joueur de rugby sud-africain". I don't know if this bug has been reported before or if it is already fixed, but if it not, please fix it.
Thank you for looking into this and best regards. — Metamorforme42 (talk) 12:08, 14 September 2017 (UTC)
- PS: I made a pull request on your github because it wasn't fixed. Could your bot checks again this type of items if this pull request is merged? — Metamorforme42 (talk) 12:24, 14 September 2017 (UTC)
Hello. Thanks for reporting this mistake. I have merged your PR, but I will think what is the best way to fix the affected items. Emijrp (talk) 12:31, 14 September 2017 (UTC)
SELECT ?item
WHERE {
?item wdt:P31 wd:Q5.
?item wdt:P21 wd:Q6581097.
?item wdt:P106 wd:Q14089670.
?item schema:description ?frdesc . FILTER(LANG(?frdesc) = "fr").
FILTER(STRSTARTS(?frdesc, 'joueuse de rugby')).
}
There are 3,500 items with wrong descriptions. Emijrp (talk) 12:31, 14 September 2017 (UTC)
- Done I used QuickStatementsBot to fix the affected items, it should be ok now. — Metamorforme42 (talk) 09:10, 17 September 2017 (UTC)
- @metamorforme42: Awesome, thanks. Emijrp (talk) 09:46, 17 September 2017 (UTC)
description cleanup edit
hi, often items are incorrectly marked as disambigs or lists, e.g. Q28053081, and your bot auto-adds descriptions in many languages. I have just fixed the item - will the bot auto-remove the original description (e.g. if it still matches the description for a list in that language)? Thx! --Yurik (talk) 03:20, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
- @Yurik: Hello. No, the bot doesn't overwrite descriptions. Though you can undo the bot edits to remove the descriptions on batches. I just did it. Emijrp (talk) 08:01, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
- @Emijrp: I think it would be a good feature to add - track whenever P31 changes from a disambig or a list (or subclass) to something else, remove all descriptions where text is the same as the translation for that language, or any historical translation for that language (this might be harder to keep). I myself have fixed a number of these types of errors. Good idea about batch undos btw. --Yurik (talk) 17:23, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
- P.S. Judging by history of Q1453627, @PLbot: does cleanup some of these, but it must have missed Q1287918. CC: @ValterVB:, @Stryn:, @Pasleim:. --Yurik (talk) 17:32, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
- Personal opinion: we must never change a disambiguation item in other type of item, it's better create a new item. Some time I changed them but the more useful solution is: don't change. --ValterVB (talk) 18:26, 2 October 2017 (UTC)
stop for a while please edit
Hey :) We currently have a very high dispatch lag. This causes changes to show up on Wikipedia only very late. This is not ok. Can you please slow down for a while until it is down? You can check it here: Special:DispatchStats. --LydiaPintscher (talk) 18:57, 19 October 2017 (UTC)
- @LydiaPintscher: Done. Emijrp (talk) 19:42, 19 October 2017 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot! :) --LydiaPintscher (talk) 19:48, 19 October 2017 (UTC)
descriptions for scientific articles edit
Hi! Can you please tell your bot to also add "مقالهٔ علمی" as the Persian(fa) description to scientific article (Q13442814) items? Many thanks! -- Meisam (talk) 19:50, 22 October 2017 (UTC)
- Done. Bot will add it in the next run. Emijrp (talk) 20:17, 22 October 2017 (UTC)
new bot script edit
Hello Emijrp, Do you have some time to write a new bot script for river in ...? so, we can add 300K descriptions. I have list ready. --Aftabuzzaman (talk) 20:30, 22 October 2017 (UTC)

- The diff you see when you compare two different versions of a page has changed on MediaWiki.org and the test wiki. This is to make it easier to find a text change in a moved paragraph. It will hopefully soon come to more wikis. You can report bugs in Phabricator. [13]
- A new user group on Commons will be able to upload MP3 files. The plan is to have this user group from 17 November. [14]

- If you use the Chrome web browser on Android you can see a download icon on the mobile website. You can download a formatted PDF. It will work in other mobile browsers in the future. [17]
- The abuse filter now has a function called
get_matches
. You can use it to store matches from regular expressions – one of each capturing group. You can read more in Phabricator.
Problems
- Last week's MediaWiki version didn't come to all Wikipedias because of a database crash. It will be on all wikis on 20 November. [18][19][20]
Changes later this week
- There is no new MediaWiki version this week.
Meetings
- You can join the next meeting with the Editing team. During the meeting, you can tell developers which bugs you think are the most important. The meeting will be on 21 November at 19:30 (UTC). See how to join.
- You can join the technical advice meeting on IRC. During the meeting, volunteer developers can ask for advice. The meeting will be on 22 November at 16:00 (UTC). See how to join.
Future changes
- Language converter syntax will no longer work inside external links. Wikitext like
http://-{zh-cn:foo.com; zh-hk:bar.com; zh-tw:baz.com}-
must be replaced. You will have to write-{zh-cn: http://foo.com ; zh-hk: http://bar.com ; zh-tw:http://baz.com }-
instead. This only affects languages with Language Converter enabled. Examples of such languages are Chinese and Serbian. This will happen next week. [21][22]

Check your translations edit
Hello, your bot added many translated description for species items (thank you for this), but this kind of fr & it translations was bad: arachnid is not a synonym of spider, and here we have a pseudo-scorpion treated as a spider... I cannot imagine how many pages are affected, but could you replace araignées in French by arachnides, and ragno in Italian by aracnidi? Thank you in advance! :) Regards, Totodu74 (talk) 13:33, 24 November 2017 (UTC)
