Wikidata:WikiProject Etymology edit

Hi! I started the WikiProject we talked about at Wikimania: Wikidata:WikiProject Etymology. I also looked at more of the word-item, but the situation currently is pretty unstructured. We probably need to prepare some example items where people see how they should edit other words. --Tobias1984 (talk) 22:22, 28 June 2016 (UTC)Reply

Query issue edit

Hey, this what's we got after you left..

[17:55] (SothoTalKer) [17:40] instead of ?item wdt:P31 wd:Q179164 . this should be used: ?item p:P31 [ps:P31 wd:Q179164] .
[17:55] (SothoTalKer) [17:40] more information why and how can be found here: https://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/SPARQL/WIKIDATA_Qualifiers,_References_and_Ranks
[17:55] (Lucas_WMDE) [17:41] can also be abbreviated like this: ?item p:P31/ps:P31 wd:Q179164

Now I still don't get it, but we have solution. :P ‐‐1997kB (talk) 13:21, 2 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

@1997kB: Thanks a lot, that makes perfect sense and gives me a sensible query. Still I'm curious though why wdt:P31 works for Bulgaria but doesn't work for Kosovo. Please let me know if you sort it out. Epantaleo (talk) 16:38, 2 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Maybe that's because of rankings as you pointed out in your IRC comment? Epantaleo (talk) 16:42, 2 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Looks like because of ranking..

[18:44] (LotR) SothoTalKer: so is ?foo p:Pxxx/ps:Pxxx ?bar always equivalent or better than ?foo wdt:Pxxx ?bar, or are there scenarios where you're better off with the latter?
[18:49] (pintoch) LotR: sometimes the latter is better, for instance for queries about things in the present (for instance, retrieve the current employer of a person, rather than all the former ones)
[18:54] (SothoTalKer) p/ps gets you all values, independent of rank, wdt gets you never any of the deprecated ones, and if exist, only the ones with preferred rank
[18:59] (LotR) and if you want preferred and normal, but not deprecated? you have to use p/ps and add stuff to filter out the deprecated ones?
[19:01] (SothoTalKer) wdt will always only return the value(s) with highest rank, so you would need p/ps and filter the deprecated ones with wikibase:DeprecatedRank
