Mouflon

edit

I presume cs:Muflon should be linked to Q993274 because this article describes european muflon (Ovis musimon = Ovis orientalis musimon). The article about asiatic mouflon or mouflon in wide sense (Ovis orientalis = Ovis gmelini) currently does not exist in cs-wiki. -- Alexander Shatulin (talk) 10:47, 13 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Well, the reason is legit: in Slovak, jednotlivec=an individual, while osoba=person. Having said that, I usually do not diconnect even weak matches unless I find a better match, which I meant to do but got distracted. Littledogboy (talk) 10:10, 18 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Q8229 and Q41670

edit

I reverted your edits on Q8229 and Q41670 and here's why:

  1. Many Wikipedias link to Q8229 because of this
  2. The statements for Q8229 clearly shows that en:Latin alphabet belongs there
  3. The history of Q8229 clearly shows that users know that they are linking to Latin alphabet
  4. Prior to Wikidata only 3 wikipedias linking to en:Latin script

Regards. --Lam-ang (talk) 15:42, 13 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hey Lang-am. I think you made a mistake. Many languages seem to have an article about the most common writing system in the world (with the green map), and that is what people want to link to. By mistake, some people put an enwiki sitelink to this item to an article about script for writing archaic and classical Latin! (Yes, these two articles on enwiki overlap a little bit, and that's why they have {{About}} on top.) Littledogboy (talk) 17:12, 13 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
You could be right on some of the languages but I doubt if you understand all the languages for the articles linked to item Q8229, what you did was just swapping the en Q's between these two articles and did not do much in solving interwiki conflict and left the rest of Wikipedias who are actually meant to link to en:Latin alphabet hanging. I think the best way to do this is leave the en interwikis where they're at so we don't go chasing the en interwiki. For the languages you understand (excluding en), if you're sure about the contents of those articles and think that they are linked to the wromg item feel to move them where they're supposed to belong.--Lam-ang (talk) 19:19, 13 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
I looked at quite a few of the pages, as well as incoming link before making the move, but as there seems to be a lot of opposition (confusion?), I shall seek consensus at Talk:Q8229. I can't see why would so many articles link to en:Latin alphabet. Would you care to help with languages you know? Ty Littledogboy (talk) 19:41, 13 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello Littledogboy. I found in the category:"Bodies of water by country" that all subcategories are splitted in a Česky and an English path. Do you agree that they should be merged? Is there a Bot who can fix that? Regards --Peter in s (talk) 07:17, 28 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

I don't know, categories tend to be so messy... almost never exactly the same thing across Wikipedias. Wouldn't Q8161096 be a better match for the Czech one? Littledogboy (talk) 12:44, 28 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
I see your point. To be honest, my Czech is a bit rusty. So far I understand google translator right, the czech word "Vodstvo" means something like "water". So by transating the word seems to fit - but I am not shure by meaning. The german pages that linked to the czech ones talking about "Gewässer", what is close to "Waterbody". Q8161096 is from my impression a top category that not exist in many other wikis. The structure of "Category:Bodies of water of the Czech Republic", "Kategorie:Vodstvo Česka", and the related german pages (Kategorie:Gewässer in xxx) looks to me similarly, or more or less the same by how they are organized. Regards --Peter in s (talk) 15:40, 28 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Well, Peter in s, there is only one offending subcategory in the Czech category, Category:Water transport in the Czech Republic (Q8157903) – that's good enough for merging in my books. Let's do it your way. Do you want me to merge them? Littledogboy (talk) 16:23, 28 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Good Morning Littledogboy, I checked the whole morning the other languages. finally I have to agree that it is not that simple. In dutch as an example the word "woterbody" seems not to exist in the english or german meaning. So I decided to do only the german and those languages part that is absolutly clear to me. Regardless that all mean the same - just in different words. When you come to the decision that it is czech the same, I can help you to move. By the way - I found something in the czech wiki that might get some attention: cs:Kategorie:Průplavy podle zemí and cs:Kategorie:Vodní kanály podle zemí. TV serials & seasons

edit
Hi, I see you deleted a statement I introduced. Of course it's a little dubious but I think it's not that trivially incorrect : A series is by definition a sequence of TV programs. A season is also a sequence of TV programs, hence it is a special kind of series ... TomT0m (talk) 14:00, 7 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

I think the following reasoning also applies to the case you mention:

<human brain (Q492038)> part of (P361) <human (Q5)>
<Albert Einstein (Q937)> instance of (P31) <human (Q5)>
<Albert Einstein's brain (Q2464312)> instance of (P31) <human brain (Q492038)>
<Albert Einstein's brain (Q2464312)> part of (P361) <Albert Einstein (Q937)>

Littledogboy (talk) 14:12, 7 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

You mean it would imply that a human brain is a subclass of homo sapiens ? I don't think so because the part of relationship is not transitive. Making a season a subclass of serie would'nt change that, thus no, the reasoning would not apply. TomT0m (talk) 14:35, 7 July 2013 (UTC)Reply
Actually it is transitive, so a part of a part of something is also a part of something, cf. Property_talk:P361, my bad /o\ But still, it makes the subclass argument more compelling, an episode is both a part of a season and a part of the whole series, it is totally sound to consider that a season IS a special kind of series. TomT0m (talk) 14:52, 7 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

I don't know about correctness, but compare following two analyses:

A) <Episode 29 (Q1979506)> part of (P361) <Twin Peaks – Series 2> part of (P361) <Twin Peaks (Q2085)>
B) <Episode 29 (Q1979506)> instance of (P31) <Twin Peaks – Series 2> subclass of (P279) <Twin Peaks (Q2085)>

What do you think? Littledogboy (talk) 23:23, 7 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

It is not the same level. I don't think that saying a <season> is a subclass of <tv serial> implies that. TomT0m (talk) 10:19, 8 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

Littledogboy, congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Wikidata. Please take a moment to read the Wikidata:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Wikidata:Project chat and Wikidata:Administrators' noticeboard), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings, or modifications of protected pages.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikidata-admin @ irc.freenode.net. If you need access, you can flag someone down at #wikimedia-wikidata @ irc.freenode.net. You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading, although it doesn't always completely apply here at Wikidata. You may also want to consider adding yourself to meta:Template:Wikidata/Ambassadors, and to any similar page on your home wiki if one exists. (WT:Wikidata/Wikidatans on En-WP.)

Please also add/update the languages you speak to your listing at Wikidata:List of administrators. You may also like to add your username to this list if you would not like that items you delete at RfD get marked as deleted automatically. Again, welcome to the admin corps!

Problem with adding property

edit

Dear Littledogboy, I tried to merge Q3798581 into Q1753397, but I was not able to complete this. On the first page there is a property "BNCF Thesaurus code" and when I tried to add this to the second page, it did not show up as a link like it should. Also I was not able to add the source of the property (Q460907 or Biblioteca Nacional Central de Florencia), I just couldn't click on 'Save'. I have had this problem nearly always when I tried to add sources but in this case it is necessary to complete the merge.

After this, I decided to merge in the other direction but when I tried to move the German Wikipedia link for Türzarge from Q1753397 to Q3798581, I got the error message that Zarge was already on Q147949. Apparently de:Türzarge has become a redirect to de:Zarge in May. Then I gave up for the time being.

Can you explain to me how to add a property like I mentioned above? Best regards, Bever (talk) 02:42, 1 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Merge-project requiring language skills

edit

Dear Wikidatan,

Even though Wikidata phase 1 (replacing interlanguage by Wikidata) is officially finished, there are still a lot a duplicate items that should be merged. Projects to list possible duplicates (and therefore possibles mergers) have been started by users such as Pasleim with User:Pasleim/projectmerge and Ivan A. Krestinin with User:Ivan A. Krestinin/To merge. Those bot-generated lists do however contain quite some false positives and therefore still need a human eye to decide whether to merge or not.

Since you are an administrator on Wikidata with knowledge of the Czech and Slovak languages, User:Ivan A. Krestinin/To merge/cswiki and User:Ivan A. Krestinin/To merge/skwiki might use your help. As said, it lists couples of WD items that might possibly be merged. If you are already involved in these projects or not interested, I am sincerely sorry for bothering you.

Hi,

What is Our Lady of the Sign (Q597232) about ? Is it about a specific single icon or is it about a type of icon ? Right, now it has subclass of (P279) = icon (Q132137) (so it seems to be a type) but it is linked to en:Our Lady of the Sign (Novgorod) instead of en:Our Lady of the Sign.
