Date of birth edit

I noticed you are removing the date of birth from Wikidata items but without a reason. Can you please tell me why? Thanks. Jane023 (talk) 07:27, 6 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

@Jane023: In this case, the date was marked as being sourced from enwiki, however doubt was raised over the date (as there were two different dates on the page). As there were no external sources to confirm the date, I removed both to be on the safe side. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any edit summary box when I did it - that might just be me being silly though! Mdann52 (talk) 07:31, 6 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
But no date is worse than two doubtful dates as long as they are not decades apart. Leaving both dates sourced from one Wikipedia is preferable to no date at all, which has a precision of centuries instead of decades. Even a ballpark figure helps Wikidata. If you have doubts, it shouldn't be a reason to delete a date that some else has added. You can always post your comments and doubts about statements on the talk page of the item. Data removal is undesirable except in those cases where it is blatant vandalism. See for example Willy Stellwag (Q28064405) where I just added a second birthdate and then added references for both. I see now that the edit summary box is indeed not available while removing a statement, which may be because having the message is more important - interesting.
