Ethnicity:Sami

edit

Tiõrv! Thank you for adding so many Saami people to Wikidata! When you're adding in ethnicity, could you please specify which Saami community they belong to? Some of them I've changed, but there are some I have never heard of like Nina Kanewa (Q126485588). On a separate topic, you might be interested in this table of Saami women that I created to see who has articles and in what languages. Feel free to add more Wikidata QIDs to the list if you spot someone missing or create new items! :) - Yupik (talk) 16:36, 30 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Тӣррв! I see your point. But I'm of the opinion that we should add information only if we have sources. Especially when it comes to persons' ethnicity. For instance Oktyabrina Voronova (Q4125669) is described as having Ter Sami ethnicity -- deduced from her native language --, but I don't believe Ter Sami ethnicity exists. We know that ethnicity is constructed in general, but for ethical reasons we should let Ter Sami speakers construct their own ethnic identity first, rather than construct it for them. However, I find evidence for Kola Sami (or "Russian Sami") ethnic identity. Therefore, I suggest using this one for Oktyabrina Voronova (Q4125669) (if we find a source). --Rießler (talk) 07:42, 2 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
That sounds like a good plan imo. I think the book In the Shadow of the Midnight Sun had more detail about what Saami language(s) she wrote in and perhaps what her "ethnicity" was. The back of this says "Стихи писала на иоканьгском диалекте саамского языка." - Yupik (talk) 01:33, 4 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
All sources state that Oktyabrina Voronova (Q4125669) was a speaker of Ter Saami, that's no question. But when it comes to ethnicity I'm afraid we cannot state more than "Saami" or "Kola Saami" (depending on the source). Nina Kanewa (Q126485588) is represented as "Saami (person) in Russia" by the source (Sámit Ruoššas), hence with this source she cannot be described other than as having "Saami ethnicity". --Rießler (talk) 10:50, 4 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
