Thanks for removing non-genre statementsEdit

Hi, first of all thanks for removing non-genre statements that I have added. All of those edits where made automatically with a script. I will also look into all my edits and remove non-genre statements. The reason for adding wrongly statements is a script error. I have created a task on phabricator, so this wont happen again :) - Premeditated (talk) 19:12, 13 July 2019 (UTC)

So my guess was right, I supposed something like that. Indeed, they could exclude at least the internal links found within {{cite web}} (or, better still, within any <ref>), which seems to be the cause for most of the cases. — Mike Novikoff 03:50, 14 July 2019 (UTC)

Alias in RussianEdit

Hey Mike, Is there a reason why you are putting Russian label alias in English? Thanks! :) ‐‐1997kB (talk) 09:23, 5 August 2019 (UTC)

It's not a label (which is in Russian really), it's an alias. Generally, I adhere to Help:Aliases (along with Help:Label and Help:Description); it says that aliases are used for searching and so alternative spelling is useful while alternative word order is not (see Help:Aliases § Criteria for inclusion and exclusion). — Mike Novikoff 09:55, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
Sorry if you thought that I was talking about label, honest mistake.. it was about alias. How I see is that alias are added in same language as the language of row. Like if you want to add alias in Russian label/description row it needs to be in Russian. Correct me if I am wrong, but if you search Skai Jackson without adding in Russian alias, it still gives you results as there's one in English row. ‐‐1997kB (talk) 16:01, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
I don't really know all the details of the local search engine, I seldom use it myself. It gives the results from the English row for me too, but that's because I have English in my Babel just like you do (and furthermore, I have also set it in my preferences, I use English interface for the site). Not sure what the users with different language settings will get. I just see that adding names and titles in their original language as aliases for other languages is a rather common practice. For instance, similar aliases in English for Chinese. — Mike Novikoff 20:35, 5 August 2019 (UTC)
Yeah I have seen those alias many times, that's why came to ask. Anyways thanks for explanation.   ‐‐1997kB (talk) 03:34, 7 August 2019 (UTC)

I. I. MechnikovEdit

I added the alias "I. I. Mechnikov" to Ilya Mechnikov (Q172254) because he is in fact referred to as such in English sources, as indicated by simple perusing of Google Books. The aim of my addition was to increase clarity and utility. Cheers, -Animalparty (talk) 01:00, 30 September 2019 (UTC)

And I don't get the point of removing the subject's full name, "Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov", or other common aliases. Are you trying to make data more difficult to find and link to? -Animalparty (talk) 01:06, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
Per Help:Aliases, they are meant for WD local search. Moreover, the search results depend on user's language settings. Thus, it's hard to imagine that someone would ever type exalcty 'I. I. Mechnikov' in the search box. As for 'Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov', it was an alias for Russian language, and it's similarly unlikely that anyone who uses Russian would ever search for a transliteration of the native Russian name. — Mike Novikoff 01:30, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
From Wikidata:Glossary: "Aliases help people to find an item even if they don’t search with the label." And you might be surprised what other people might reasonably think to search for, even if you do not. There may be some confusion between us here: I never edit Russian aliases, only English ones. Common versions/variants of a name should certainly be included. Per Help:Aliases: "You should always include: Full names for people commonly known by a nickname or by a fraction of their full name..." The first sentence of en:Élie Metchnikoff begins "Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov..." And the author abbreviation Metschn. is standardized by the International Plant Names Index, such that almost any botanical/mycological publication with that abbreviation unambiguously refers to Ilya Mechnikov (Q172254). I look at aliases as similar to redirects in Wikipedia: helping people (and/or bots) reasonably find what they are looking for more quickly, and reducing the chances of confusion or duplicate creations. Note that Help:Aliases (at least the English-language version) is a work in progress: not a formal policy or guideline. But even then, if you feel you must adhere to it, please re-read: "unlike labels there can be as many aliases for an item as necessary." Cheers, -Animalparty (talk) 02:00, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
Full name for Ilya Mechnikov (Q172254) in Russian is 'Илья Ильич Мечников' and it's surely included there, it's even a label.
Thanks for a source for 'Metschn.', I didn't know that. Feel free to put these back if you will.
I agree that aliases are similar to redirects. And, similarly to them, just because you can create many doesn't mean you should create more than necessary. Redundancy is an awful thing in all the WMF projects (and outside them too), I always struggle against it, as both WP:MOS and my understanding of WD:UCS prescribe. (Btw, my respect to those who have worded the 5th pillar here at WD in such a cute and positive way!). And yes, our policies here are somewhat underdeveloped, but we must adhere to something apart from IAR, and I'll be glad if we clarify our policies. — Mike Novikoff 03:30, 30 September 2019 (UTC)
And just in case you haven't yet seen a real redundancy and havoc, take a look at this. No, I haven't eliminated it, I'm just scared. No way! It would take Mr. Somebody to deal with it. As with all the stuff that is carelessly included just "because included". ;-\ — Mike Novikoff 06:25, 30 September 2019 (UTC)

Woody WoodpeckerEdit

Mike Novikoff if you editor Woody Woodpecker (Q59828807)

But the Portuguese article by Woody Woodpecker (série) from Wikipedia, was redirected back to The Woody Woodpecker Show.

I'm trying to re-edit the article by Woody Woodpecker (série), but Usuário:Fabiojrsouza & Usuário:79a do not stop redirecting or blocking.

I'm so sorry! — 177.54.229.65 (talk)

Well, it seems that there are currently two items: The Woody Woodpecker Show (Q3284351) and Woody Woodpecker (Q59828807), each containing its own set of articles. I don't really know the difference between the two, but is it right? And if not, what exactly should be changed?
If pt:Woody Woodpecker (série) redirects to pt:The Woody Woodpecker Show (which I didn't notice before), then it clearly doesn't belong in Woody Woodpecker (Q59828807) and your edit is correct. It there anything else that should be changed yet? — Mike Novikoff 15:20, 22 January 2020 (UTC)

I don't know! Mike Novikoff, no, I saw that the article in Portuguese Woody Woodpecker (série) was blocked by Usuário:Fabiojrsouza, He will be unlocked until November 6, 2020. Only detail, but if I re-edit the article Woody Woodpecker (série), The user 79a He revert and redirect back to the The Woody Woodpecker Show, and then it will be blocked with infinite forever and there is no way!. He doesn't have a good excuse! — 177.54.229.65 (talk)

Ready!, I did not reissue the article by Woody Woodpecker (série), But I edited the article Woody Woodpecker, (The problem is the articles of Woody Woodpecker (série de filmes) was blocked Infinito by Usuário:Editor D.S.) wait for Mike Novikoff o Usuário:79a it will continue to redirect the article of Pica-Pau (personagem) again!.

god's green earthEdit

Hi there! IPI numbers in the alias field is simply a shortcut used by those of us who edit songwriter credits as it saves a lot of time and eliminates doubt when composers are named the same. Nothing nefarious! ;) Moebeus (talk) 00:28, 22 April 2020 (UTC)

Can you please make it written in Help:Aliases (provided that such a change would gather enough consensus, as opposed to the things that would not)?. I'll always follow the rules, you see. — Mike Novikoff 01:50, 22 April 2020 (UTC)

Edit

[1] ? ShinePhantom (talk) 05:11, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

— Mike Novikoff 07:40, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
Carn (talk) 08:58, 16 June 2020 (UTC)
— Mike Novikoff 11:02, 16 June 2020 (UTC)

3 days, continued personal attacks after a very clear warning. You have clearly seen this, I was very clear that this behavior is not acceptable, but you still have chosen to continue. Here we are. The next block will be of a longer duration.--Ymblanter (talk) 12:17, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
@Ymblanter: Congrats! You've just killed me. Yaroslav, I have zero toleration for such cruel sanctions, there's no place for me without a clean log, so now I've got no choice but to leave. You've just effectively made an indef. :(((
So you are on their side and won't even look at my arguments? And you do this when I've pinged you myself? It reminds me of this. It's my hardest disappointment now: I had believed in your opposition to ruwiki's clans, and now they win because of you. :-\ — Mike Novikoff 13:30, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
I am sorry but I do not think I should be responsible for your own constructions which you built in you head. I told you last time very clearly that civility requirements are not optional here, you have chosen not to listen. This was your choice, not mine. If you now decide to leave, this would be your choice as well. May be you are on a war, but I am not.--Ymblanter (talk) 13:35, 30 June 2020 (UTC)
@Ymblanter: War is the last thing that I'll think of. Shall I teach you that WP is about collaboration, not competition? "Constructions in my head" are just WP policies that I've learned before I had even created my account. Of course I'm very upset when the written policies are broken, and even more so when I discover some unwritten policies instead. (BTW, we are facing "1 July 2020" in Russia, if you know what I mean). You see, Carn have even accepted that he came from a chat. So what my "incivility" is?

— Mike Novikoff 15:13, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

No, we do not revision-delete logs unless they contain serious BLP violations.--Ymblanter (talk) 16:09, 30 June 2020 (UTC)

Personal attack removedEdit

Hi! I'm afraid I had to remove a section from your use page because it appeared to constitute a personal attack. If you have concerns about an administrative action, you should raise them for discussion at WD:AN. If you choose to do so, I strongly recommend that you do so with more civility. Happy editing!
