Commons categories

Hi Multichill,

Great idea to link the Commons categories. Good thing this is done now rather than later.

No problem. It seems to be using the link from nl:Sankt_Gallen_(kanton).

Yes, that's the basis. I stole some code from commonscat.py . If I run that on the Dutch articles, it prompts me to update it. Weird. Needs a bit more attention to trace and find the bug.

I'm not sure about creating items just for categories on Commons. I see this as an intermediate step. At some point in time we can create objects here for pages/files/categories at Commons. Than we can just link everything together. Far future I'm afraid.... Multichill (talk) 16:38, 3 April 2013 (UTC)

I would also like to congratulate you to this initiative of linking Commons categories! - Are you planning to automatically generate links in Wikipedia articles pointing to Commons-Categories? - This would be really great as it strongly facilitates the improvement of discoverability of Commons content! Another issue that might be worth looking into is the possible replacement/merger of Commons category descriptions with Wikidata entries (e.g. Switzerland (Wikimedia Commons) / Switzerland (Wikidata)). And finally, we should think about the relationship between structured metadata on Commons and Wikidata (I would guess that all structured data would eventually be handled in Wikidata?!) Hi Beat,

Thank you, I'm happy to see that it's picking up speed. Several templates are used in Wikipedia to link to Commons: Commonscat, sisterlinks and sometimes the infobox. These should just grab the property here from Wikidata. You chould just run a query to find all articles that do have a link to Commons here on Wikidata, but don't have a commonscat/sisterlinks template. A bot could than add the missing templates. This is technically already possible in some Wikiedia's and all others will come in the next couple of weeks.

Found it. I made a mistake in the code: I was checking for correctness, but not actually using the result (doh!). Fixed the code.

I'll write a bot to check and correct or remove current entries. We need that anyway to keep up to date. Multichill (talk) 14:43, 6 April 2013 (UTC)

Wrong commons category

Hello, Multichill! Your bot has recently added the Commons category property to Mureş County saying it is Alba County, which is wrong. I have corrected it to Mureș County, but I am curious which was the source of the information (maybe we need to correct that too). Rsocol (talk) 07:19, 6 April 2013 (UTC)

Monuments in Switzerland

Hi Multichill,

The monuments database is a most helpful tool.

I was wondering if you would consider doing a first upload of monuments in Switzerland. I like to do some editing on them to improve the overall quality.

I created a few manual items for Altdorf, e.g. Q10612914. More existing items can be found with Special:WhatLinksHere/Q8274529.

Compared to your database, properties that seem to missing at Wikidata are: street address and coordinates. Swiss grid coordinates might also be helpful. As the datatype for coordinates might still take some time, you might want to upload the other parts first.
