imported from Wikimedia project (P143)

Hi,

after this your change (and a few related) a lot of earlier references become containing false information as yhis property was used earlier for imports from non-Wikimedia wikis (eg DBpedia (Q465)). How is it intended to be fixed? Ankry (talk) 20:12, 27 March 2021 (UTC)

That property shouldn't have been used in the first place. DBpedia (Q465) is a bad example because that's just Wikipedia data that went through the blender so it won't give a violation for imported from Wikimedia project (P143).
You should replace these imported from references with real references. Multichill (talk) 21:14, 27 March 2021 (UTC)
Why I should? It is mass import made years ago by a bot which I do not know. And I have no idea how to make a mass fix. Ankry (talk) 12:48, 1 April 2021 (UTC)

Catalogs and catalog numbers and more (or less)

Hi! Thanks for your interest. It’s complicated. But I will try to explain.

My wife and me usually help with Wiki Loves Monuments. She takes the pictures and I do the driving. We need a catalog of items and instructions to arrive there. Basically I started with that. The theory goes that Authorities (more about them later) have Rules and Lists. Rules do exist but lists have problems.

Our geographical area of interest is the Community of Valencia (Q5720). So when it comes to authorities we have the Spanish government, the regional government and local governments (more than five hundred of them). They can take a different view on the same item, and they use different criteria and numbering systems.

Back to Wiki Loves Monuments, it is about monuments. National, regional or local: all of them. Did we have a complete catalog? No. So I lacked the main tool. It was a very odd situation. I could drive 150 km to a place in the mountains to take pictures of a handful of monuments and when I was back home –that’s after a 300 km driving!- I could find by chance that I had missed this and that chapel or bridge or whatever that were on another list. Not a good thing.

There are three main categories of monuments in the Land of Valencia. Bienes de Interés Cultural (Q23712) are legislated by the Spanish government. Bienes de Relevancia Local (Q11910247) are legislated by the regional government. Both Bienes de Interés Cultural and Bienes de Relevancia Local can be found in the web [1] on a section called Inventario General del Patrimonio Cultural Valenciano. Lists for BIC or BRL can be obtained, but not a general list for both categories together. Maps are few and mistakes are frequent.

Bienes Inmuebles de Etnología (Q41477381) are not a part of Inventario General del Patrimonio Cultural Valenciano but can be reached from the same web. Information about each BIE item seems to depend on local governments. It means that quality and quantity vary wildly. Some municipalities list not a single Bien Inmueble de Etnología. Others list hundreds of them. BIE are important to us as they seem to form a promotion league. Once several hundreds of ceramic panels were promoted from BIE to BRL, meaning that Wikimedia lists were suddenly incomplete by hundreds of items.

Therefore, I am including on Wikidata every single BIC, BRL and BIE in the Land of Valencia. As of today, there are more than 7,000 instances of them. I also include some stuff that could be protected under any of those three categories but are not yet; they do not appear on my queries but their Qs are ready to add P1435 asap. (Note: protection is a relative concept, many a BIE and even some BRL have been destroyed).

I would be happy to have something that I could call a Standard Catalog. As BRL and BIC are listed separately, and as Authorities seem to distrust each other’s cataloging, duplicates are possible and do happen. An artifact listed as BRL can be promoted to BIC. Numbers can be added. But being a BIC doesn’t stop it from being a BRL: it’s like a team playing on first and second division at the same time! It can also be the case with BIE and I have popped into a few triplets.

Self criticism: I started out of sheer need. I have learned by doing. And I have taken some wrong decisions.

I have asked other people from time to time, mainly User:Amadalvarez who has a much better knowledge of Wikidata than I do. But most Qs (about 4000) were added by different people at different times (making different mistakes). Some are more standard than others. I mostly try to keep oddities at a minimum while providing enough information to make our catalog useful. For instance different properties (P2795 now, but others at different times) have been used to show address or location (general meaning: this thing is on 23 Main Square, Cerpuñetas; or this thing is where the road to Quintopino crosses river Muchungo… If you drive to there, you are pretty likely to find them). Coordinates are always on P625, fortunately.

Adding references is also important.

Should I have a catalog like the one you are using on NRW, I would move to use P528 P972 combination. As for now, I am trying to use a consistent (imperfect) system, because I think that if every item is done in the same way, a machine will pretty easily modify all files to the standard once it is settled. But right now I’m trying to create a catalog of Valencian monuments that can be queried so that WLM people have an easier time making lists, WikiShootMe! can be used by wikitakers and other friends (that includes my wife, great incentive) and gaps in information (items without coordinates or pictures for instance) can be more easily found.

Sorry for the Very Long Pedazo de Tocho that I have written to you!

I really appreciate your writing to me. It feels like finding other inhabitants in the island!

canvas (Q4259259)/ canvas (Q12321255)

Hi Multichill, I noticed that canvas (Q12321255) is the first proposal editing "material" which could cause mistakes, specially in German both items are the same word.--Oursana (talk) 18:44, 22 April 2021 (UTC)

Ok, so someone did the split up? Might be better as we also have things like sails and roofs made of it. If consensus exists that canvas (Q12321255) is the way forward some constraints can be updated to prefer canvas (Q12321255) over canvas (Q4259259). We would need a bot to work on https://w.wiki/3EuD (200.000) anyway. Started Wikidata talk:WikiProject Visual arts#Canvasing_about_canvas. Multichill (talk) 17:45, 26 April 2021 (UTC)

anonymous (Q4233718) Anonymus vs unbekannt

Hi Multichill, have seen you reverted https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q4233718&oldid=prev&diff=1407795989 from unbekannt to Anonymus. Latter is imho not very smart, as (a) the name of a person or an artist or whatever is not known (= unbekannt) but it is not Anonymus (von griechisch ανώνυμος = namenlos), as it has a name, but this name is not known to us. On top of that, Anonymus might have imho a quite negative impact, if people might confuse this statement with the hacker collective. And finally, up to my knowledge, nobody of German mother tongue uses Anonymus instead of unbekannt. I strongly suggest, you revert your action. cheeers, h. AnBuKu (talk) 18:48, 24 April 2021 (UTC)

That's intentional, it has a special meaning, see de:Anonymus. Multichill (talk) 19:50, 24 April 2021 (UTC)
