Hi Nemo. You wrote: "a 'buffer file' ... means that the actual work (improving our information) will not be on the wiki pages but elsewhere. In short you're proposing to repeat the Nupedia vs. Wikipedia mistake: haven't we learnt anything from history?" I had the same thought exactly! I am glad I am not the only person with a certain thought process. I have no idea how anyone thinks that Wikidata could ever provide information to Wikipedia (for example) when there is already a fuss over importing "male/female" and "place of birth/death".

The danger that Wikidata faces -- and what I am personally afraid of, but it was my prediction before I joined -- is that the very rigid rule-bound mentality that developed on English Wikipedia would carry over to Wikidata and make it impossible to accomplish anything productive right from the start. My version of your question above is, "Didn't we learn anything from why Wikipedia was successful in its early days?" The environment was free enough for positive things to happen.

Meanwhile, we already see arguments like "no one is using the data yet, so there is no rush." Well, there will never be anyone using the data, as long as obstacles prevent any quantity of data from existing (in the first month of the project!). So who is going to initialize thousands and thousands of records with basic information if there isn't an "initial load"? Much of it is mind-numbing work, for computers. Editors' job is in part to organize and manage and review that work, obviously with the help of bot operators.

I hope you don't mind me visiting your talk page. Your thoughts welcome. The issue is fundamental enough, for me at least, that it will ultimately affect my participation greatly, so I am interested in different perspectives. Regards, Espeso (talk) 11:20, 24 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the response... Apparently the 'buffer file' proponent trusts some person at a computer doing data validation offline or off-site (then maybe finding sources for those half million non-numerical data points)--trusts that person more than the collected product of the major Wikipedias to date. We'll need a wiki to organize the buffer file project--WikidataData! But seriously, the irony is that this project is expected to assume that Wikipedia is not trustworthy for the most elementary information. Is Saturn really a planet? Who can be sure? Italian persondata template edit

Hello Nemo, I don't know how familiar you are with the italian persondata template:Bio, but i have a few questions. The template:Bio in itWP articles about persons makes the first sentence very, very structured, it's a complex template with categories, picture etc. It's almost a person-infobox - without a box. Now, how would this work with wikidata inclusion? The point is that inclusion of wikidata in text is difficult and therefor wikidata is concentrating on infoboxes (first?). So would the italian template make inclusion of wikidata easier? My question is touching two issues of german "wikipolitics" (i maybe exaggerating ;-),

1) german wikipedians don't like "infoboxing" of persons, except in sports
2) There is a longstanding discussion about the introduction form of articles about persons, because as a standard we use a cross symbol for the date of death, which many feel is not appropriate for jewish and muslim clerics etc. and should be changed to a neutral wording.

All this makes the italian template an interesting model for a new standard introduction in articles about persons (not a box!). Well, maybe not the automatic categories and "500 authorised occupations". How would you integrate template:Bio with wikidata? Or would you abandon the template? English Wikipedia will probably include wikidata in the person-infoboxes. And german Wikipedia doesn't widely use person-infoboxes now and the majority dislikes them. What do you think, how to include? --Atlasowa (talk) 13:30, 26 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello, thank you for your interest. I know bio quite well, except for implementation details and daily management; I'm perhaps not the best person to ask because I never really liked it. ;-) For the same reasons I don't know what will happen to it after we get the data imported here: it's something others will probably take care of, and I try to focus on a step at a time.
On your questions for de.wiki, do they dislike infoboxes because of the template format or because of the tables? Our template doesn't help with formatting quarrels like the cross, it just moves them all to a central place; but the same could happen with a bot imposing a single format: I doubt de.wiki leaves freedom of style here, so the template wouldn't change anything.
The main purposes of the template on it.wiki are 1) categorisation according to the authorised activities and categories; 2) automatical listing of people born and dead on a given day. If you don't want the list of activities, or if you have a different categorisation system (en.wiki for instance likes to over-categorise a lot, and has often ten or twenty times the categories it.wiki has for an article), it wouldn't be very useful; similarly, if you don't update days articles automatically there's little use in the dates in machine-readable format, but you could use wikidata data for them even without adopting a template system for biographies. What will probably be superseded is your persondata template (just like en.wiki's), after de/en.wiki (and later VIAF) data is imported here. --Nemo 11:54, 28 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hello Nemo, thanks for your response. The main purposes of the template on it.wiki (categorisation, "what happened on this day...") are not so needed / useful for de-wiki, we just use different ways (have a look at Personensuche, a toolserver application for searching in persondata).
Regarding the dislike of infoboxes, this is about person-infoboxes and their content, sources, etc. Read for example the current discussion on en-wiki: en:Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)#Proposal:_Add_height_as_a_parameter_for_all_biographical_infoboxes, it's pretty much the same reasons and more...
Regarding the cross-quarrels, it's a sour topic that nobody really wants to touch (even though we should, imho). Don't even mention bot-runs against crosses ;-) But for wikidata inclusion, we might have to agree on a structured introduction anyway. Think of several name-transcriptions from chinese, for instance. A template would move the cross-or-not issue to a central place, yes, but we could then build an opt-in gadget for those who want to see crosses. And a bio-template would be an alternative to person-infoboxes (in terms of "let's see, where can we put the wikidata, hm...").
Finally, I'm a little surprised that you want to import millions of person data (Wikidata:Project_chat/Archive/2013/02#Italian_person_data) and haven't thought about how to use them on-wiki... You know, en:Garbage in, garbage out? I once found 3 articles about the same person on en-wiki (arabic names...). What about the bad data that will be transfered by bots to wikidata (wrong or unsourced data from infoboxes on en-wiki, some maybe with a not directly attributed source)? How do you think this will be cleaned up? Manually on wikidata? Is this a "second step" too, "something others will probably take care of"? Why create a mess in the first place? Shouldn't we think about data quality before mass imports to wikidata? --Atlasowa (talk) 17:08, 3 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

--β16 - (talk) 12:19, 2 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Uhm....capito :( --β16 - (talk) 12:28, 2 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Ci posso provare. Mi potresti spiegare meglio i vari passaggi? Se ho capito bene:

--β16 - (talk) 16:58, 2 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Quindi alla fine tutti saranno Fuzzied? --β16 - (talk) 17:33, 2 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

--β16 - (talk) 15:39, 4 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Niente lascia perdere quello che ti ho detto...probabilmente ero fuso. Ora sta girando. --β16 - (talk) 09:37, 5 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

--β16 - (talk) 21:09, 6 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

Italian person data edit

Ma secondo me, come dice Nemo, bisogna partire. Aubrey (talk) 10:40, 27 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
--ValterVB (talk) 11:05, 27 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Italian person data #2 edit

Hi Nemo, I saw your message about the opportunity of importing claims from the Italian bio template here so I spent some time setting up a script for that task, but after checking a few hundred pages it seems that there is very little that has not been imported already. Can you provide a set of pages that would require an import from that template? Thanks,--Underlying lk (talk) 10:44, 28 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hello, thanks for your interest! We're keeping track of the progress at this page. There is no need for now to duplicate efforts on the properties currently being imported, but there are several properties on which work has not started yet, just pick one. :) You can also help with the preparation work, for instance User:ValterVB/Sandbox could have the blank "item" cells pre-filled with the Q# corresponding to the it.wiki article in "parameter" column; this will let us import hundreds thousands profession statements. --Nemo 10:54, 28 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
@Nemo_bis: Nazionalità can be imported with a caveat: when it refers to people born before the 20th century, it's wrong more often than not (many renaissance Italians have country of citizenship (P27) -> Italy (Q38) instead of Papal States/Republic of Venice/etc). Immagine should be relatively straightforward but it doesn't seem to be much used. I could also import dates of birth/death easily, but only by assuming that all dates refer to Gregorian. By the way, I'm a little troubled by this: "44148 if M, 43445 if F". Surely male (Q6581097) and female (Q6581072) should be used instead?--Underlying lk (talk) 11:14, 28 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
Underlying lk, that's not (necessarily) "wrong" nationality, it's something that has been carefully considered on a case by case basis because it's a complex matter. I don't have opinions on it; if Wikidata has clear and consensual policies on the matter please link them, I don't see anything on page description or talk that would make it.wiki's use wrong and I wouldn't know what to forward to it.wiki.
I'll update the page for dates and yes we're using the new properties for gender, they didn't exist when I made the request.
So maybe you could start with Immagine? Nemo 07:19, 29 April 2014 (UTC)Reply
The description of country of citizenship (P27) is pretty straightforward IMO, the object is the country of which the subject was a citizen, so that the country of citizenship (P27) of Julius Caesar (Q1048) is Roman Republic (Q17167) rather than Italy (Q38), which avoids the paradox of someone being citizen of a country that didn't even exist when he was alive.--Underlying lk (talk) 03:41, 1 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
So straightforward that your example doesn't respect the constraints: it's not an instance of state. :) --Nemo 06:22, 1 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
It should be. Don't miss the forest for the trees.--Underlying lk (talk) 11:52, 1 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
That's a double-sided argument: who's actually missing the forest? The history of states is never as easy and clearcut as you claim. --Nemo 12:01, 1 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
I never made any claims about 'the history of states'. If you don't find my arguments convincing you can ask in the project chat for a third opinion.--Underlying lk (talk) 03:00, 2 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Alberi monumentali edit

--Nemo 08:17, 5 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Gestori aree protette edit

--Nemo 09:42, 26 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
Io no. Punti di vista.

Ti ringrazio in anticipo, --Epìdosis 14:25, 28 March 2019 (UTC) P.S.

Nemo 13:05, 15 April 2019 (UTC)Reply

DOAJ import on 18th century (Q7015) edit

Hi,

This does not look quite right :) Special:Diff/1045095383

Hope this helps, Jean-Fred (talk) 16:00, 6 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! Reverted (also locally). Nemo 16:03, 6 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
It even had a 100 % match rate... So I created Q73881544 to avoid that it happens again. Nemo 11:49, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Andes edit

I reverted your changes in Q5456. Please review and look for the right Andes. --Juan Villalobos (talk) 12:50, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thank you! In the next few days my plan was to make a few queries to find odd matches. Nemo 12:57, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
I now went through all the matches to odd types. In 4 cases other users were faster; I've unmerged about 50 more and created new items to avoid future confusion.
Probably by digging deeper with other cross-checking queries in the near future I'll find some more mismatches among items without a P31 statement, but hopefully this is most of them. Nemo 15:06, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

ELM Scholarly Press edit

Special:Diff/1046765259 [no mention of the press anywhere] For example, on museum's website two journals Q50534467 and Q50534471 are listed as publications of the press (EKM Teaduskirjastus). Also, DOI prefix for most of these listed publications, 10.7592, is of the press. As the press is part of the museum, then it probably isn't wrong to say that these are publications of the musem. Then again, as the press is a distinct entity and it has its own item Q31272587 then why not model the data accurately. 2001:7D0:81F7:B580:447D:C35A:93B0:EF6F 12:52, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Is the press an incorporated entity? It would be nice to update DOAJ as well. Nemo 12:58, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
It isn't a separate registered legal entity, if that's what you mean. Nonetheless, it certainly exists in composition of the museum. 2001:7D0:81F7:B580:447D:C35A:93B0:EF6F 13:02, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
That might explain the confusion. It's like the journals which say they're published by the faculty or department or even office of this or that university... hard to tell whether that makes any sense legally or otherwise. I won't edit either way but it's worth adding references and telling DOAJ so that the next person doesn't do the same. Nemo 13:35, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

I now checked two university presses. I may have been wrong about the University of Tallinn as its website indeed explicitly says that the press publishes only three journals of the university. However, are there examples of journals of the University of Tartu (Q204181) that aren't by the press? Wikidata has Q50515486 and Q9347355 marked as open-access. Website of the press lists both as its publications. For at least one of these, name of the press is also printed on cover[3]. University of Tartu Press isn't a separate legal entity either, but that's rather formal and it's unclear why it would matter in our context. This press still has its own staff and, in what comes to publishing, it operates like any other publisher. You may tell DOAJ, but I'd think that the data doesn't have be the same one-to-one, we might just be more accurate on Wikidata. 2001:7D0:81F7:B580:447D:C35A:93B0:EF6F 14:33, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

I don't feel strongly about this. I just suggest to not remove the statement that the university is the publisher, given it seems to be correct at least in some sense (for instance legally). We can mark the university press as the publisher and mark the other statement as deprecated, so that it's still there and (hopefully) doesn't get added again the next time. Just my suggestion on how to keep the sync simpler with an external source. Nemo 21:56, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Open-access batch job mistake? edit

Hi there! It seems a batch of yours is repeatedly confusing "fuel" with a CD single by Metallica called "Fuel". See https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q72927050&action=history and https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q15754394&action=history Will you have a look when you get the time? The same has also happened with the term "Electricity". Moebeus (talk) 17:09, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, must have been a misclick when reconciling the subjects! Will correct those two and double check the others. Nemo 17:14, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
So, from what I've seen looking through 60 types of entities chosen as subjects those were truly the only two wrong cases. Apart from the instances of CD single (Q719645), the other items make sense in a way or another. Nemo 19:34, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for checking it out. Might still be a problem with https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q66058141&action=history but otherwise probably fine. Keep on truckin'! Moebeus (talk) 21:04, 7 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Another one here. Issue is two journals with the same short name (since one had a different issn and the other already had the correct one, I'm not sure what happened there... especially since there were TWO import edits in succession?) Circeus (talk) 18:00, 8 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thank you, unmatched locally. Not sure how this happened, they had the same match score for me. The two distinct edits were because the first was before the publishers were matched, I tried to explain in the edit summary. Nemo 22:01, 8 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Large number of duplicate institutions with bad info edit

Hi - you seem to have created a large number of duplicative records for research institutions - example here, which already existed at Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (Q5038732), and you have added a heuristic country (P17) value to these that is in almost all cases wrong (in this case the organization is headquartered in Austria, not the UK). I'm in the process of merging these with the existing records, but please be more careful in future. The titles of these organizations exactly matched existing entries, so I don't see how you missed that if you did a matching step at all here. ArthurPSmith (talk) 15:54, 3 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for letting me know. I did perform a match, and I also run a check after the import to identify a few duplicates, so I'm not sure what went wrong. I might have erroneously chosen a filter by P31. If you're into OpenRefine I can send you the project file so you can see. Nemo 16:07, 3 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Faculty of Education edit

Is this referring to a specific place or is this a general item? The additional info says its a research institute in Canada, but these are always part of a university and no university is mentioned in the statements or the description. -Yupik (talk) 22:06, 19 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

The info was available from the reference of P31, although not in a structured way. I'll expand the entity now. Nemo 06:11, 20 January 2020 (UTC)Reply

Messed up descriptions edit

Hello, when you imported journals last year, lots of descriptions got changed to "open-access publisher", from universities. Could you revert some of the changes. Germartin1 (talk) 08:20, 22 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hello, thanks for checking. I'm not aware of descriptions being changed: in your example, it was merely added where there was none. The same should hold true for names, added as additional aliases. I think it's good to have more names and descriptions rather than less, when an entity has multiple functions. Nemo 08:52, 22 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Institutional mixup edit

Hi Nemo! I noticed that the item FU Berlin, University of Erfurt (Q74432907) currently has the label "FU Berlin, University of Erfurt", which seems to conflate "FU Berlin" — which means Free University Berlin (Q153006) — with "University of Erfurt" (University of Erfurt (Q702524)). Furthermore, the item is tagged and described as an open-access publisher (open-access publisher (Q45400320)), all of which suggests that it would be good to take another look at what you had in mind here, or what your data source was. --Daniel Mietchen (talk) 23:17, 21 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hello,

If you have a few time to investigate about the potential issue mentionned in my message regarding several data you’ve added to Surveillance and Society (Q15762192) it would be cool. If you don’t well nevermind, maybe someone else will do it. Anyway, have a nice day.

Call for participation in a task-based online experiment edit

Dear Nemo_bis,

I hope you are doing well,

I am Kholoud, a researcher at King's College London, and I am working on a project as part of my PhD research, in which I have developed a personalised recommender model that suggests Wikidata items for the editors based on their past edits. I am inviting you to a task-based study that will ask you to provide your judgments about the relevance of the items suggested by our model based on your previous edits. Participation is completely voluntary, and your cooperation will enable us to evaluate the accuracy of the recommender system in suggesting relevant items to you. We will analyse the results anonymised, and they will be published to a research venue.

The study should take no more than 15 minutes.

If you agree to participate in this study, please either contact me at kholoud.alghamdi@kcl.ac.uk or use this form https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSees9WzFXR0Vl3mHLkZCaByeFHRrBy51kBca53euq9nt3XWog/viewform?usp=sf_link

Then, I will contact you with the link to start the study.

For more information about the study, please read this post: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/User:Kholoudsaa In case you have further questions or require more information, don't hesitate to contact me through my mentioned email.

Thank you for considering taking part in this research.

Infobox Revue Tracés (Q73896686) edit

hello! You created the infobox https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q73896686 concerning the journal Tracés. Unfortunately, the wikipedia page https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trac%C3%A9s had been attached to the item https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3536363 created earlier by a bot. I informed this element a little before I realized that this other one created by you existed. How can this be resolved? In my opinion, Q73896686 contains more information and it should be attached instead of Q356363. Regards DCh50 (talk) 11:07, 10 February 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the note. I've merged the two items. Nemo 15:57, 11 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
