Hello edit

I saw your thread on w:en:Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women in Red. Yes. Wikidata has heaps of people items with no sex or gender (P21) value, and often without an instance of (P31) value (should be human (Q5)).

The reasons are much as Rosiestep indicated ... it kinda depends on who created the wikidata item, and from what they were working. There is no automatic process, so much as there are a bunch of individuals who run bots, or who use tools like Petscan or the Wikidata Query Service, to nudge along the whole business of adding statements to items.

The central problem for those working on the wikidata side is that language Wikipedias are so lacking in structure as to make automatic determination of what the article is about, and if human, what the gender is, quite difficult. If we take one of your examples, w:en:Marian Osborne we can say 'Oh, she's in various women categories so she must be a woman so...' ... but if we interrogate w:en:Category:Women writers using Petscan we find that to three layers of category depth, there are (as I write) 214 articles without a P21 value on their wikidata item; and of those, most are not women, but are lists, or are things associated with women writers. Elsewhere an article title that looks like a human may be a fictional human or a pen-name. The scope for making a wrong assumption and adding garbage to wikidata is wide, and tool and bot users are sensibly quite conserative in the judgements they make when adding items and adding properties. The result is what we see - thousands of biography items with no gender and/or no instance of human. And the issue applies to biogs of male as it does to biogs of female, in roughly the depressing 6:1 ratio we see for those two classes.

After that preamble, the main reason for my dropping you a note is to point you at Petscan, a tool which is capable - within limits - of finding articles that lack a wikidata item, or that have a wikidata item but have no P21 value. The WE-Framework gadget you're using is great, but it does require you to interrogate articles one-by-one to discover if they're missing gender (and equally, WE-Framework gadget then provides an excellent platform for adding all sorts of stuff to an item.)) I'll forebare to mansplain Petscan to you right now, but if you're at all interested, will come back later and write some words / provide some examples.

Ditto on the Wikidata Query Service, a tool that allows users to write reports that interrogate wikidata and draw up lists of items - by way of example, here's a report on people whose place of birth is within the UK and who lack a P21. (Hit the play button to get the report to run.)

And then there's QuickStatements, a tool that facilitates bulk addition of statements such as P21= female (Q6581072) to lists of candidate items which might be supplied by Petscan or by WQS. Very easy to use, once you have got the hang of it.

So there you go. Just consider me your friendly neighbourhood wikidata crack dealer. If you've an interest in any of these things, let me know. --Tagishsimon (talk) 22:19, 19 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Wow! Thanks Tagishsimon. You've given me lots of things to assimilate and apply. MIt may take a while. So far I'd been checking one-by-one that the bios added through the WiR project had P21 female in place. Your suggested tools could help me take this much further. And I will look into using them. My first priority should, however, be to creating new articles for Wikipedia. If I need help with Wikidata, I certainly know who to ask! Thanks again. --Oronsay (talk) 23:34, 19 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Well, anything I can do to tempt you to the dark side ;). It is important, since wikidata drives the WHGI statistics as well as all of the WiR wikidata-derived redlists.
--Tagishsimon (talk) 00:20, 20 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
I do understand about the statistics. That's what got me involved in Wikidata in the first place. I realised there was limited use in adding women's bios if they weren't being counted for statistics purposes! --Oronsay (talk) 00:24, 20 August 2018 (UTC)Reply
Ditto. I ran multiple Petscan queries daily for five or six months to try to address the P21 problem such that WGHI was more accurate ... but eventually tired of that game. I wish you happy article writing; I must do that myself, sometime. --Tagishsimon (talk) 00:34, 20 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Q56223409 edit

Hi! Just to let you know, I've merged an item you created, Q56223409, into Q3847095 as they are the same person. (Ping me to get my attention.) Thanks. Bilorv (talk) 22:33, 21 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

I've merged Martha Susan Baker (Q56192184) into Martha Susan Baker (Q21995239), also Elizabeth Macdowell Kenton (Q56192157), Hetta Empson (Q55613678), Juliette Bonheur (Q56059366). Should have been possible to find the other items before creation I think. Cheers, --Marsupium (talk) 17:39, 10 September 2018 (UTC), 18:01, 10 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
Apologies, Marsupium. I am attending a Wikidata workshop tomorrow at State Library of NSW and hope to learn much more about editing here, and avoiding this sort of issue. Oronsay (talk) 20:18, 10 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your reply! Fortunately, those cases at least weren't to hard to find. :-) Hopefully, there aren't many hidden others. Enjoy the workshop and happy editing! --Marsupium (talk) 20:28, 10 September 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hi again, Marsupium. I plan to go through the list of my contributions and check for duplicates over the next few days and will merge where necessary. Thanks for your encouragement. Oronsay (talk) 00:11, 11 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

Phew edit

Thank you for the enormous number of edits you've made to items with no gender. We've got through the backlog much faster than I ever thought possible. I think it'll probably take more than a week for the work to filter through to WHGI - despite the advertised dates on that page, iirc there's a bit of latency in its pipeline, and results often appear a week or so later than expected.

I think I'll next do some work on Petscan reports on the Metrics/Wikidata page - there are still a number of smaller backlogs & issues, such as:

  • biography items with no properties
  • biography items with no P31=Q5 but having other properties
  • biography items with the wrong gender (I found & dealt with about 150 females coded as male in the last 24 hours, which should offset some of the many males we've just coded)
  • biography articles with no item.

The main issues with all of the above is finding them, and/or finding them without also listing non-biography or other false positive items. I'll try to explain issues as I add sections on Metrics/Wikidata. Obviously I welcome any more of your input on any of these, though, you should never feel compelled to continue. At best we fire-fight these backlogs. They always eventually return. --Tagishsimon (talk) 00:12, 10 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Tagishsimon, thank you for your kind words. It's been fun, even though I did mine edits the slow way. I'm happy to call by the Wikidata page and see what reports you've come up with and continue to help where I can. Getting through all of those is a massive achievement. Well done! Sharhabil Ahmed edit

How do you know that the cartoonist and the musician are the same person? Gamaliel (talk) 16:55, 11 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Gamaliel: from reading the translation of the Arabic bio of Sharhabil Ahmed. Oronsay (talk) 20:43, 11 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for clearing that up. Gamaliel (talk) 21:15, 11 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Interview Invitation edit

Hi Oronsay,

I noticed your edit stats on Wikiscan, which led me to look up your profile. Thank you for all the hard work!

I’m reaching out to you because I’m working on a research project about understanding what motivates editors like you to contribute to Wikidata. We’re also interested in learning about how you feel your contributions are being used outside of Wikidata. Since you are such an active community member, I thought you might also be interested in helping to build the broader community’s knowledge about Wikidata, and why it matters.

If you’re interested, let’s schedule a time to talk over Zoom, or whichever platform you prefer. You could leave a direct message or fill in a questionnaire. The conversation should take about 30 min.

Hope you have a great day,

Chuankaz (talk) 03:53, 11 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

George Denton Park edit

Hi! I was looking at George Denton Park (Q96715024) and it seems to me that this item ought to be a park, not a person. Would you like to share your reasons for changing it back? Bovlb (talk) 00:45, 2 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Bovlb: You are correct. The article is about the park, not a person. I was bold, then backed off and made a request for help at WP Project New Zealand as the article is incorrectly categories on Wikipedia, too... which caused the Wikidata issue. You are welcome to sort it out, please and thank you. Oronsay (talk) 00:49, 2 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. It seems that @Schwede66 has pre-empted us both. Bovlb (talk) 00:50, 2 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Electoral results for the district of Ashfield edit

Thanks for creating the wikidata item of Q97798609 (Electoral results for the district of Ashfield) - it seems to me that there should be a link with Q5355051 (Electoral district of Ashfield) but I am unable to figure out how that link should be made. Any suggestions? --Find bruce (talk) 00:58, 29 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Find bruce: I look at the new Aussie Wikipedia articles every day and try to link to Wikidata or create new items thereby avoiding "floods" by the GZWDer Bot that bury new items without any Statements, let alone Identifiers. Your series of electoral results was among them. I'm afraid I can't help with the linkage you suggest. Perhaps @Canley: may be able to help. Otherwise, try looking for a similar series of electoral articles that someone else has created and see how they've been handled in Wikidata - not necessarily in Australia, possibly UK? Oronsay (talk) 01:51, 29 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
In the lists of election results, I would suggest using applies to jurisdiction (P1001) = Ashfield (Q5355051) to link the results to the electorate. --Canley (talk) 01:59, 29 July 2020 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Oronsay and Canley - now that I have finished election results I am working my way through the missing pages for each district, so will try to add the wikidata page as part of that process. I will see if I can find a decent set up from another location. I had looked at the Australian House of Representatives, but that doesn't appear to be any better. --Find bruce (talk) 03:10, 29 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Professorial queries edit

Hi Oronsay. Popping in with a Sparql query as discussed on my talk page. This one finds people with a "position held" statement that is any subclass of academic title, where they don't also have a "sex or gender" statement. https://w.wiki/uWn This one goes through occupation professor instead, and finds more https://w.wiki/uWo There will be other ways of expressing that someone is a professor that I haven't covered of course.DrThneed (talk) 01:46, 16 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thanks @DrThneed: I'll see where these take me. Just added gender to nearly 80 women in the 2nd list. Perhaps they will now show up on Women in Red redlists and get written up by other editors. Oronsay (talk) 02:37, 16 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

AAAS fellows edit

Hi Oronsay,

are the Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (Q52382875) complete? Kind regards Jackie Bensberg (talk) 09:29, 20 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Jackie Bensberg, At this stage I have done A-H of the main batch, but not the IHM. I'm splitting the alphabet up and using OpenRefine, but expect to finish in the next few hours. I've found and merged a number of items that were duplicates, so am doing more than simply adding the fellowship awards. And, at this stage, I'm not creating items for those people that I haven't found - if you'd like to create them, please search again first, just in case I missed any of them:
  • Abdullah T. Antepli, Duke University
  • Kimberly Atkins Stohr, The Boston Globe
  • Richard Berke, STAT
  • Maria Cancian, Georgetown University
  • Kerwin K. Charles, Yale School of Management
  • Franklin D. Costantini, Columbia University
  • Mary Croughan, University of California, Davis
  • Derrick Darby, Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey
  • Laurence J. Fishburne III,
  • Judith Hamera, Princeton University
  • Rodney Hero, Arizona State University
  • Wendell T. Hill, University of Maryland
  • Luis Chi Ho, Peking University
Then there are Wikipedia articles to update where necessary. Oronsay (talk) 15:38, 20 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Are you working on 2023 or every year?--Jackie Bensberg (talk) 15:41, 20 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Jackie Bensberg, Just the new 2023 people at the moment.Oronsay (talk) 15:43, 20 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
@Jackie Bensberg: Do you have a query that shows the "award received" plus "point in time"? My SPARQL isn't sophisticated enough to create one. Searching for the "award received" returns 3,410 items of the 14,604 recipients so there are heaps missing from Wikidata or needing to have the award and year added. Oronsay (talk) 15:53, 20 April 2023 (UTC)Reply
Final update for @Jackie Bensberg: Have now added award received to 2023 recipients who I found on Wikidata. Balance of those not found (but please check first before adding because I may have missed one or two):
  • Jacqueline Jordan Irvine, Emory University
  • Tristram R. Kidder, Washington University in St. Louis
  • Dung-Hai Lee, University of California, Berkeley
  • Amy E. Lerman, University of California, Berkeley, Goldman School of Public Policy
  • Emily Mann,
  • Pamela T. Newkirk, New York University
  • Petra Todd, University of Pennsylvania
  • James Van Cleve, University of Southern California
  • Susan S. Wallach, Schulte Roth & Zabel LLP
and two in the IHM division:
  • John Booth, The National Gallery, London
  • Julieta Fierro Gossman, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México
3,557 now on Wikidata. That's me done with Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (Q52382875), at least on Wikidata and for the moment. Oronsay (talk) 18:17, 20 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Great work! Tackling all will be another year's task.--Jackie Bensberg (talk) 18:23, 20 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

Te Papa agent ID edit

Hi, there is a problem with these imports. For example [1] is incorrect, it should be just the number 50590. Is it possible to fix these? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 01:26, 8 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

@MSGJ Thanks for letting me know. I've alerted other editors who have been working on the Te Papa MixnMatch dataset and believe all the errors are either in the process of being fixed or have already been. Oronsay (talk) 02:27, 8 September 2023 (UTC)Reply
Many thanks! I wasn't sure if there was some automated way the number could be extracted from that data set. Not too familiar with Mix-n-match. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 07:45, 8 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Reverting gender statement edit

Thanks for letting me know about Q19001530. It was a bulk upload of gender statements for a group of researchers looking at authors of plant names. I'll let the group researching the gender of botanical plant name authors know so they can correct their dataset. Ambrosia10 (talk) 21:11, 14 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Totally understand and glad you can provide that feedback. I chose to revert rather than remove and included the edit summary so you knew what was going on. Oronsay (talk) 22:28, 14 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
