WMF projects

Dear Sjoerddebruin; I have seen your edit at Wikimedia Belgium (Q18398868) and want to let you know that the number of Wikidata:Database reports/WMF projects has increased to more then 385. You may be interested in adding labels and descriptions in other languages, follow the discussion at property talk:P218#whats next, property talk:P219, property talk:P220, property talk:P1800 and comment there. Deletion (Q22669038)

Hi, it would be great if you could explain your reasoning for the deletion of this page: https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q22669038

I would have thought the "serious and publicly available" external references provided would have qualified it under the notability policy.

Cheers!

Google Plus and LinkedIn aren't enough to qualify it under the notability policy. If that were enough, we would be a huge database of persons and companies, a Google Plus and LinkedIn account are created in just a few minutes. Mbch331 (talk) 17:07, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
Thanks Mbch331 - I wasn't referring to Google Plus and LinkedIn. Other references included articles in The Guardian and PR Week, the website of Corporate Citizenship's parent company, Chime Communications, and the Wikipedia page for Bell Pottinger. Thanks.
Wikipedia pages aren't considered trustworthy sources, so those don't count. Must say I didn't see the other links, because sources are collapsed by default. @Sjoerddebruin: could you take another look. Mbch331 (talk) 17:28, 16 February 2016 (UTC)
The subject can have "serious and publicly available" external references", but those need to be added to the item as well. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 07:39, 17 February 2016 (UTC)
Thanks - I'm not sure precisely what you mean, but if you're able to restore the page I'm happy to try to fix it. Please?
Restored. Please add the required stuff or a other sysop will find your item and will do the same. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 21:40, 27 February 2016 (UTC)

Vraagje

- Robotje (talk) 05:27, 2 March 2016 (UTC)

Title single value constraint

Hey, you deleted the single value constraint from title. Sure, there is a lot of violations, but the solution would be to sort them out (by deleting false values and with qualifiers like transliteration or transcription (P2440) and the sort), and not to delete the constraint. The talk page makes it clear that the property is for one title per item only (titles for translations and editions should go to items of translations and editions). – Máté (talk) 11:05, 22 March 2016 (UTC)

I was confused by the labels of the property. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 11:08, 22 March 2016 (UTC)

Invitation to Wikidata user study

Dear Sjoerd de Bruin,
I am a researcher of the Web and Internet Science group of the University of Southampton.
Together with a group of other researchers from the same University, we are currently conducting a research aiming to discover how newcomers become full participants into the Wikidata community. We are interested in understanding how the usage of tools, the relationships with the community, and the knowledge and application of policy norms change from users' first approach to Wikidata to their full integration as fully active participants.
This study will take place as an interview, either by videotelephony, e.g. Skype, phone, or e-mail, according to the preference of the interviewees. The time required to answer all the questions will likely be about an hour. Further information can be found on the Research Project Page Becoming Wikidatians: evolution of participation in a collaborative structured knowledge base.
Any data collected will be treated in the strictest confidentiality, no personal information will be processed for the purpose of the research. The study, which has submission number 20117, has received ethical approval following the University of Southampton guidelines.
We aim at gathering about 20 participants, chosen among experienced Wikidata users who authored a large number of contributions.
Should you be interested in taking part or wish to receive further information, you can contact us by writing to the e-mail address ap1a14+wikidata_user_study@ecs.soton.ac.uk.
Thank you very much, your help will be much appreciated!

Snack/Snack food

Hi! I see that you reverted my merge between snack (Q17504654) and snack (Q749316) because "Merging items by deleting information beforehand is not-done". My merge was a conscious decision: I find that the two items represent the same concept, and do not make distinctions, say, a meal vs. the food eaten during that meal. The items I removed are sitelinks that I removed, not just to make way for the merge, but believed that they did not belong there. nl:Hapje is a type of food/dish eaten as snack, and th:อาหารว่าง vs. th:ขนมขบเคี้ยว are synonyms and candidates for merging. I believe that the change was not controversial, hence I didn't make a merge proposal. If I missed something or if there is a correct procedure for performing such a merge, please let me know. --Wap (talk) 10:57, 29 June 2016 (UTC)

Skrzydło ptaka

Whyd did you reverted my edition? Flight is not the same as wing, some of connected articles are about completely different things, mine is strictly about anatomy of the wing, not about flight. They are two different things. Soldier of Wasteland (talk) 22:50, 29 June 2016 (UTC)

Hello, I am curious why you removed some of the information from MacGvver the Lizard, such as instanceof Tupinambis rufescens which was well sourced. Thanks. Lizzymartin (talk) 23:34, 6 September 2016 (UTC)

Most of the statements didn't make sense and were hitting our constraints. After looking at Knut (Q159697), it would make sense to place Tupinambis rufescens (Q1429898) back. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 06:47, 7 September 2016 (UTC)

Property P279

See the discussion here, concerning the perpetual confusion between instance of (P31) and subclass of (P279).

In order to reduce this confusion, we need much clearer descriptions of these properties. The description that you restored: "dit item is een klasse van dat item", is not helpful and possibly even misleading. It is a fact that it did not tell me what the real meaning of this property is; so much became clear in abovementioned discussion. The text proposed by me: "deze klasse is een deelverzameling van die (grotere) klasse" may not be ideal, but is at least a whole lot better.

Vinkje83 (talk) 15:01, 11 September 2016 (UTC)

Petscan defeats me; add WS works is tedious

Hi. How do I use Petscan to generate a list of whatlinkshere for item such as Eight Harvard Poets (Q19093101)? It is a slow and tedious process to 1) manually create all the subparts of the work, then 2) add them as parts of the parent. I clearly need to know/learn how to do these differently. Creating an edition at WD is a tedious task of manually entering much information that already exists elsewhere in the system, then when there are subparts to a work that are individually significant, creating and populating the subparts, linking, then adding a badge. For subparts often numbers of factors are the same, but there will be subtle variations in one factor, eg. page numbers, that require manual entry. Can you offer guidance to help the obviously confused? Thanks.  — billinghurst sDrewth 07:22, 29 September 2016 (UTC)

Wikidata - VIAF

Hi Sjoerd, I have noticed that you re-removed VIAF for Q26908223. While I do agree with the items sparsity, still, since those VIAFs indicate different name styles based on the book records in German Library and provided that they can be edited, I think it is for the best to keep them. In addition, what do you think about the status of the removed quotes? Arashtitan (talk) 08:57, 12 October 2016 (UTC)

It just feels weird to me to include them. About the quotes: quotation (P1683) should only be used in the source section. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 08:58, 12 October 2016 (UTC)

Universal Monsters

Hi. I notice you reverted my edition. Might be because of lack of domain of Spanish. The article that should link correctly is "Monstruos clásicos" which is the one that in Spanish deals with the same subject as the other. Menawhile "Universo Cinemático de los Monstruos Clásicos" deal only with some of the movies of the franchise but not with the monsters themselves. --Dereck Camacho (talk) 21:45, 18 October 2016 (UTC)

You seem to make quite a mess with everything. Can you please be more clear why you moved ALL sitelinks to a item without statements? Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 21:47, 18 October 2016 (UTC)
Sorry, just getting the grasp on this. I thought it was easier. Lets see:
Spanish article Monstruos clásicos is about the Universal Monsters, as such it should link to the articles about Universal Monsters of all languages. OK?
Universo Cinemático de los Monstruos Clásicos is about the Cinematic Universe of the Universal Monsters, originally linked to "Universal Monsters (2017 film series)" in english but I change that because it doesn't really deal with the 2017 revival.
I tried to do a fusion of Universo Cinemático de los Monstruos Clásicos and Monstruos clásicos but it didnt go through so I put the interlinks on Monstruos clásicos instead. Then it came your reversion.
And yes, I am sorry for all the inconveniences, I really thought it was easier. I normally just add the article in english to the article in spanish and all other languages are added automatically. Once this issue is resolve I won't edit on Wikidata any more. --Dereck Camacho (talk) 06:07, 19 October 2016 (UTC)

I don't understand the need of keeping a wrong *unsourced* info...

https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q6285642&oldid=prev&diff=394197096

especially when the reason for deprecated rank (P2241) is wrong : it is wrong "date of death", not "date of birth" :/

I very well understand the need for deprecating (instead of removing) wrong claims with sources, but not for deprecating unsourced wrong claims (typo, error, etc.)

thanks for more explanations, please.

Re references

I use many obscure references and some primary sources for Wikisource authors. Many sources will not have entries here, and I am not going to create items for them, wayyyyy too time consuming. I document author references on the author talk page at enWS.

I have talked about my issues with referencing here and the complexity with it from census records eg. United Kingdom censuses of 1841 (Q7887918), parish registers, plethora of books, etc. I am thankful for some of the progress by enable copying of references, however, a copy and paste of data with a copy and paste of the reference to enWS is so much easier and quicker than the multi components of reference addition here. For example adding a probate from the Eng and Wal Calendars of the Grants of Probate and Letters of Administration (Q5019515) means the title, vol, publication year, page, and url; and I will usually do it, but when I have multiple refs, and multiple people to do, it just so slows the process. Happy to talk further, though this is maybe the fourth or fifth time I have had this conversation and the previous responses amounted to "suck it in princess". If references are that important we need a more convenient means to do this.

While talking about needs, I would think that it would be more important to have the primary data for enWS editions, and that data is readily available in our Index and linked pages, or in the file detail at Commons, and that addition of detail is all manual. Being manual means that it is predominantly not done unless it is the pedants like me as I complete works. Seems like something where we need something to scrape that detail into a form that could be edited and submitted to WD, either push from the enWS side, or suck from this side.

Happy to talk more about these, as long as there is a meaningful point. I have had too many discussions about the WS needs and the difficulties that have simply gone nowhere. Presumably not sexy enough. <shrug>  — billinghurst sDrewth 12:23, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
