Block request

These three ip addresses have been adding false claims to items, and at least two of them have also been re-purposing items. Due to a similar behavioral pattern and that they all seem to be obsessed with Oliver Grainger (Q7087573), I'm assuming they are all one and the same editor. I've warned two of them, and one of them responded by changing my warning message to this, and then restoring their previously reverted edits. The current ratelimit for all users and bots has been configured to ensure that all users have access to the same amount of edit capacities, and just running multiple accounts sort of defeats this measure. This is actually similar to the greedy behavior that we witnessed by some bot operators before the ratelimit was added, which was one of the reasons that made the ratelimit necessary. Thus, I ask you not to run bot accounts in a way that they exceed 90 edits per minute together. —MisterSynergy (talk) 01:02, 3 March 2021 (UTC)

      • I can confirm, the bot does not behave properly when maxlag>5. This dashboard is a little more useful in my opinion; you can see that the maxlag currently shows the "sawtooth" pattern again, i.e. it is gradually climbing above 5 and then quickly falling back to ~1 with a periodicity of 15–30 minutes. The "Max Single User Edit Rate" panel is also of interest here; particularly during the maxlag>5 phases, it is predominantly showing how quickly User:Lockalbot is going. It should not be editing at all in those phases; User:Lockal, please check your configuration and make sure that your bot behaves properly; otherwise I am going to block it soon, until you can confirm that you have checked your configuration. —MisterSynergy (talk) 10:39, 11 March 2021 (UTC)

            The sawtooth patten is generally an indicator for a overload situation, which in these days particularly mean database write load. It happens when "too many" users edit at the same time, and the maxlag mechanism is important to ensure that the situation does not get out of control. Thus, it is important that all write processes that create high load stop while maxlag>5 (i.e. everything that is automated). We usually do not blame the sawtooth pattern to a single user, but in case of a bad configuration, a single user account can in fact significantly worsen the situation for everyone. We also need to make sure that the limited edit capacities are equally accessible for all users, not just the greedy ones.
            We have the linked dashboards, but one can also measure instantaneous edit rates per user account from the recent changes eventstream. This is how I identified that your bot account is misbehaving: it went between ~60 and 90 edits per minute, regardless of the maxlag value. —MisterSynergy (talk) 11:00, 11 March 2021 (UTC)
            • Post mortem: there were 10 workers (mostly dormant), all workers were rate-limited by max 80 edits/min all-together. There was a working maxlag check and sleep, but it worked only within each worker. New WikiciteZotero tag

Hi all. I would appreciate it if someone could consider creating a new "WikiciteZotero" (or similar) tag to be used by edits made by the Wikicite plugin for Zotero I'm currently developing.

The plugin uses wikibase-edit, so it is currently using the WikibaseJS-edit tag by default. Having a custom "WikiciteZotero" tag will help keep track of the changes made with this tool.

Edits will mainly include adding, removing and editing "cites work" (P2860) statements, and eventually creating new entities as well. Right now the tool is using username and password to log users in to Wikidata, but eventually it will use OAuth 2. See discussion here.

The tool doesn't have a specific page yet, but I guess the tag may link to the proposal page for the moment.

How to monitor constraint violations

I have recently discovered many editions producing constraint violations. See Wikidata_talk:WikiProject_France/Communes#Communes_with_multiple_INSEE_codes_with_none_as_preferred_rank

They violate the single value constraint because the current value was not set as preferred rank.

They were added nearly a year ago (2020-04-11) without being noticed/addressed until now.

I am wondering if it would be possible to set some monitoring mechanism to raise an alert as soon as these violations appear, so that they can be fixed immediately.

Request undeletion - Q105906945

I'd like this page to be undeleted - I received a notification (as the creator) that it was listed for deletion. However, the page had already been deleted by the time I saw it (less than 24 hours later) leaving no trace as to the label or description of the page. If it was missing tags or references, then I would have been happy to have updated the item, except it's a bit hard for me to provide these, without knowing what it is.

Bulk deletion of items without discussion, following the request of a first time user.

Hi administrators,

I recently noticed that a few items I created are missing from the WD. Then I found a bulk deletion request made by the first time user Khakbaz Behzad (talk • contribs • logs) on the deletion request page with an item number I am familiar with.

I cannot exactly recall which items they are because the admin Wiki13 didn't leave any notice about the deleted content on the items deleted by him. Following are the items I found from the bulk deletion request and each of these items are either created by me or contributed by me. Q105714449, Q105726985, Q105707218, Q105163718, Q105037708, Q105009297, Q105008755, Q104918880, Q104864602, Q104783506.

Even though the reason for the deletion of these item says "All not notable for wikipedia", I can vouch for the item Q104783506, which had many external identifiers that are able to prove my notability. We all know that we can describe the notability on Wikidata using serious and publicly available references. So it is not necessary to worry about being not notable for Wikipedia as Khakbaz Behzad (talk • contribs • logs) says.

  • It is clear that the first time user Khakbaz Behzad (talk • contribs • logs) made this bulk deletion request with bad faith since this is his only contrib up to date. It does look like targeted vandalism. Isn't it?
  • Why didn't I get notified about the items I created when they were subjected to delete?
  • Why Wiki13 and Lymantria deleted all these items without having a single line of discussion?
  • Why didn't Wiki13 leave any details about the deleted content on the deletion notice?

This incident highly discouraged me as a contributor in this community because, I have no clue when will my future contributions get vanished and, I didn't get to learn what I did wrong and how not to do it again.

I hereby request to investigate this incident with fairness and do the necessary.
If anything proves I did something not goes by the guidelines and policies on WD, I am humbly ready to accept it and learn how not to do the same again

I have just reviewed some of my deletions regarding this user and so far for all them they fail to meet the notability policy. They all fail the good and the dependency sources requirement we have in the notability policy. Another admin review: I would have deleted that item as well, and as of now, I do not see a reason to restore it. There are indeed plenty of identifiers, but as much as I am aware, they are all either website profiles under the control of the subject themselves (i.e. you), or automatically aggregated such as the Google Knowledge Graph entry. There is nothing which we usually consider to be a "serious" source, as it all seems to be relying on yourself only.
We do have plenty of similar cases, by the way, so this is in no way an outstanding process. The procedure on WD:RfD does not seem unusual either and I do not see that any project policy has been violated by the involved admins. —MisterSynergy (talk) 12:23, 17 March 2021 (UTC)

We usually look for serious (i.w. organic) mentions you have no control over, i.e. no social media/user generated content, no own websites, profiles on services such as music distribution platforms, and of course no promotional content, and some others. We see content from all of those categories a lot, but they alone do not help to make a Wikidata item notable. Consider notability to be generated outside Wikidata/Wikimedia, by independent third party entities who happen to find your achievements notable so that they list you in their work. If you need to ask/pay for a listing or can create this listing by yourself, or if it is merely an aggregation of otherwise published information, it is not sufficient. —MisterSynergy (talk) 12:59, 17 March 2021 (UTC)

I just wanted to add that I had a similar issue (discussed above - Wikidata:Administrators'_noticeboard#Request_undeletion_-_Q105906945) - the item was deleted with no discussion, no opportunity to improve the item first and once deleted, no way to find out what the item was or what was wrong with it. It seems a common issue that would discourage a new user. I'm reasonably new to Wikidata but this is all an unexpected experience, coming from many years of activity on English Wikipedia. -- Chuq (talk) 05:21, 17 March 2021 (UTC)

I admit that I may have done things wrong but as volunteer contributors, everyone deserves an opportunity to learn and improve. L'initiative de cette insertion revient à Nomen ad hoc qui me semble appliquer un schéma qui n'existe pas. La faculté de théologie protestante fait partie d'un institut de théologie protestante, qui gère les deux pôles, la fonction de doyen est largement honorifique, occupée à tour de rôle par les 6 ou 7 enseignants de la faculté, et tu ne trouveras aucune source qui assimile cette fonction à une direction, donc il me semble qu'il vaut mieux supprimer cette allégation de directeur plutôt que d'écrire des choses qui ne sont ni avérées ni vérifiables. Wikidata:Property proposal/external georeferencer URL

Could somebody sign this off please?

It would be useful to have it, amongst other things, for the maps indexed by the query in this tweet (ie the maps in this category: c:Category:Ordnance_Survey_Drawings), to support both our collaboration with the British Library, that provided the scans and did the external georeferencing, and with our partners on WD:WP EMEW, who want to use the visual index to navigate to the georeferenced maps.

It's also a standard field in c:Template:Map, applicable to many more maps from many more providers.

Attempted repurposing of Google+ ID (P2847)

Google+ ID (P2847)'s property proposal (Google plus) was moved by Arturo Ungaro (talk • contribs • logs), as part of a non-functional attempt to repurpose it for use with Google Currents (Q85764061), without discussion. This included major alterations to Google+ (Q356), such as removal of its Commons category (P373) and topic's main template (P1424) statements. Separately, Arturo Ungaro created Wikidata:Property proposal/Google Play Books id by apparently copying Google Play Movies & TV ID (deprecated) (P6562)'s proposal from 2019.

Similar edits to Google+ ID (P2847) were made by Can Ergen (talk • contribs • logs) today.

Google+ ID (P2847) is a Wikidata property for a discontinued website (Q60457486); however, it currently has 6025 usages as a statement, as well as its identifiers linked to the Internet Archive (Q461)'s Wayback Machine (Q648266) collection Archive Team: Google Plus (or Minus) : "An archive team collection of Google Plus postings and communities, gathered in the 2019 bonfire of the ill-fated social network's repurposing [emphasis mine]."

frequent vandalism from AS21193

For several months, IPs from 85.192.64.0/18 have been vandalizing, mostly catalan, english and spanish labels and sometimes properties. Such edits appear to happen every morning, except on weekends. Some edits haven't been reverted for quite a while. I couldn't find any good faith edits from this IP range in the past month. Hi, I'm a comics lover. The page about Q3086806 was full of mistakes both on fr-wp and on WD. Someone deleted several statements and I checked as much as possible from sources to put everything right: date and place of birth, nationality, occupation, education, authority control, etc. On fr-wp a user keeps deleting pieces of information + the infobox and on WD they also delete stuff. And they don't discuss at all. I temporarily restricted their access on the fr-wp page so that they can tell what they want to do and why. Could you please keep an eye on the WD page? Can someone take a look at the edits made by Irpropupdatebot? He creates several objects and then puts them for deletion shortly afterwards. That's not the point of Wikidata, is it? I apologise; I have inadvertently created 1200 blank items, by using User:Magnus Manske's (old) quick Statements tool.

Decision on deletion requests

I'm a little confused right now. Who can decide on deletion requests here on Wikidata? I just noticed that an IP decided on requests for deletion. Is that right? I thought that only administrators are allowed to do it here, too. --Gymnicus (talk) 15:20, 24 March 2021 (UTC)

@Wiki13: As already Lymantria mentioned, it's about the IP's 14.0.236.225 and 14.0.236.235. Sometimes (especially by bots) the IP's are displayed as a users, but they are actually IP's. You can have a look at the two archives Wikidata:Requests for deletions/Archive/2021/03/23 (IP 14.0.236.225) and Wikidata:Requests for deletions/Archive/2021/03/24 (IP 14.0.236.235) for examples. You can find many examples there. The IP'S did not logically delete any elements. She shouldn't have the rights to do this, but she made intentional or unintentional retention decisions with the template Template:Done and the bot then archived the deletion requests. --Gymnicus (talk) 13:59, 26 March 2021 (UTC)
  • For some of the requests, it doesn't really matter, for others it seems problematic as one can't really discuss the decision with every changing IPs or user names. Further, some requests it seems they don't bother responding to the discussion (or seek to understand the request) and just redirect items and/or mark discussions as done. @Jura1: I do think that it plays a role in all decisions. The decision was made by a user who does not have the rights to do so, as far as I am informed. I or even the IP cannot simply delete objects because we do not have the rights to do so. Then, in principle, “the same applies to the same” and that means that we cannot make any decisions about retention either, only administrators. Possible issue with User:BorkedBot - please can someone check?

I think there's an issue with BorkedBot, as it is importing duration (P2047) values in seconds but with an uncertainty of ±1, and the uncertainty isn't necessary (there's a long history here with ±1 values, which were originally auto-added via Wikibase until we decided that we didn't want them). I raised it at User_talk:BorkedBot#Uncertainties_on_times but am not getting very far. They have refused to stop the bot and discuss it more widely, so possibly the bot needs blocking until it's fixed. It is operating per Wikidata:Requests for permissions/Bot/BorkedBot 4 but seems to be editing outside of that task (populating undiscussed qualifier). Pinging @Lymantria: who approved the bot. I have not refused to discuss the import. I have refused to stop the bot as I feel this complaint is trivial. It is operating within its approved task as the rules say "Bots must stay within reasonable bounds of their approved tasks. The general guideline is to use common sense". Importing duration was "free" when I fetched the name and seemed a trivial extension to me. Obviously different people will draw different lines with common sense. Mike Peel, so I skimmed that ticket and I don't see where it says I should not add this uncertainty. That ticket is about automatic uncertainties being added when the user supplies none. I basically agree with the conclusion reached in the ticket. But I know what the uncertainty is! The scenario from the ticket is inapplicable. I know the data is rounded and so I should supply the uncertainty. The scenario discussed in the ticket is inapplicable. Honestly the thing I most took away is that maybe I should be using ±0.5. I don't know then, it's somewhere. Just look around at items here, you very rarely (if ever) see uncertainties, let alone the useless ±1 ones. We rarely see uncertainties because users are too lazy to add them. We should see more uncertainties the same way we should see more references. Also not all numerical quantities have meaningful uncertainty. If you need a source look at the basic documentation which explains the purpose/functionality of these upper/lower bound uncertainties: Help:Data_type#Quantity. The duration is stated as X seconds but because of rounding it could be X+1 or X-1. So that is what I list. Would you feel better if I listed it as Y milliseconds plus or minus 1000? Now your duration may vary by a second, a stated 31 seconds may mean 30 or 32 seconds as well. I think that is not what you mean. So would it indeed not be more correct to use x+0.5 or x-0.5 instead? @Lymantria: so if we want to get very pedantic here, Google truncates the durations given to the second so the interval should be (X, X+1) but I can find no documentation of this behavior (just a few confused help posts). So to be safe I did plus or minus one figuring nobody would care. Apparently people cared. I don't know what you mean by overdone. Plus or minus one is not always correct (as you pointed out with your example about plus or minus 0.5 for the case of simple rounding). BrokenSegue (talk) 23:17, 28 March 2021 (UTC)

It used to be required to state the uncertainty, but as they were mostly an assessment by the contributor adding the data, we removed them some time ago. Current approach would be to not include them. If the task was approved without this being done .. I suppose someone has to run a cleanup. You could just add it to Wikidata:Bot requests. If there are just 5% left from your current bot run, I suppose it's preferable that you finish it. --- Jura 16:58, 28 March 2021 (UTC)

I am User:Olaniyan Olushola, the prseident of the m:Wikimedia User Group Nigeria. We are currently organizing a training for Developers Student Club of the Lagos State University and new users IPs are being blocked from creating account.
