Wikidata:How to create Wikidata Tours/Translate

Translation edit

Wikimedia's goal of providing the 'sum total of human knowledge' relies on contribution from people from all languages and cultures. Wikidata is available in 300 languages, meaning people can contribute their knowledge but only if they understand how to use Wikidata. This page provides instructions for translating existing tours and preparing new tours for translation.

Translate an existing tour edit

  1. Translate the text: Translate the Tour by clicking on language you want to translate into at the top of Wikidata:Tours. Then click 'translate this tour' link under the blue 'Start this tutorial' button for the Tour you want to translate. If the main Tours page does not exist you can translate it in the same way.
  2. Check label and description: Once the translation is complete, load the tour using the new language and check whether the label and description on the loaded item are shown in the correct language. If they are correct, then the translation is complete. Otherwise proceed to step 3 to add the label and description to the tour's JavaScript file for the new language.
  3. Add label and/or description to the JavaScript file (if needed): This step must be completed by an Interface Admin because tour's JavaScript file is located in the MediaWiki namespace, which can only be edited by users with special access rights. The Interface Admin should follow the instructions in the "newData" section of the JavaScript step to add the missing label and description to the live JavaScript file for the tour.

New tour: Mark the tour for translation edit

When a Tour is first created it has to be marked for translation using the instructions available here. Marking a page for translation for the first time can tricky or confusing. You can request that someone else marks the page for translation on the Wikidata:Translators' noticeboard.

New tour: Translation admin approval edit

Once the tour has been marked for translation a translation admin has to approve it. You can make a request on the Wikidata:Translators' noticeboard.
