Wikidata:Identify problems with adding new languages into Wikidata

The development team is aware that several problems occur around the process of requesting, adding and using new languages in Wikidata.

With this feedback loop, we would like to list and describe the problems, so we can address them and together with the community, find stable solutions for these different problems.

Please provide input on the discussion page.

Context edit

The topic of “adding new languages in Wikidata” covers different fields:

  • Add/request a new language in the list that is used in the termbox (labels, descriptions, aliases)
  • Add/request a new language in the list that is used for monolingual string values (for example, a value for title (P1476))
  • Add/request a new language in the list for spelling variants of Lemmas
  • Add/request a new language in the list for language of Glosses

The topics below are similar but are not covered by the present feedback loop:

  • Language of Wikidata’s interface (this is done by translating on translatewiki.net)
  • Editing labels and descriptions, and what languages shows first in the termbox
  • Adding interwikilinks (Wikipedia, Wiktionary, etc.) into Wikidata

Based on community requests and bug reports, here are the problems that we already identified. They have been added as a start for discussion on the talk page.

Questions edit

We would be very happy to have your feedback, in order to help us listing the existing problems and finding solutions. On the talk page, you will find these two questions:

  1. If you have tried in the past to get a new language added in Wikidata, what did work for you, and what did not work?
  2. If you’d like to add a language in the future, what would the ideal process look like for you?

In your answers, please add details about what you were doing (which language were you requesting, for which purpose (monolingual text, termbox, Lemma, etc.)

The feedback loop will end on January 18th.
