Q50637 (art history)

Topic: art history Items involved: Q50637Talk, Q50641Talk Status:     resolved

English has two articles:

  1. en:History of art, about the evolution of art
  2. en:Art history, about the academic discipline

Most interwikis currently go to 1, but many of them are actually about 2. There may be tricky cases, for instance es:Historia del arte is about 1., but its first sentence suggests it is about 2.Zolo (talk) 10:11, 15 November 2012 (UTC)

This was also discussed at Wikidata:Project_chat/Archive/2012/12#Art_history_vs_History_of_art -- Make (talk) 17:42, 25 December 2012 (UTC)
In portuguese (:pt) the problem is resolved. Q50641 is about history of human creation of works for aesthetic, communicative, or expressive purposes and Q50637 is about the academic study of objects of art in their historical development - Sarilho1 (talk) 12:03, 10 March 2013 (UTC)
I've moved both nl: and nds-nl entries, since they are more about the (academic) study than about the historical description of art. Droadnaegel (talk) 22:00, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

{{User:Akkakk/iw|Q50637}} Solved now, it seems. Some cases are not very clear, but that seems to be because Wikipedia articles mix the two topics. That should be solved directly in Wikipedias.--Zolo (talk) 10:03, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

Q2197/Q2186/Q1242632 (Romulus and Remus)

Items involved: Q2197Talk, Q2186Talk, Q1242632Talk Status:     resolved

Even with Google Translate it's hard to read Armenian, but I'm quite sure hy:Հռոմուլոս is about Romulus only (Q2186), thus not about Romulus and Remus (Q2197). All others seem to be correctly separated to me, though Wikipedias still mix it up in their local interwiki links. --YMS (talk) 23:01, 12 March 2013 (UTC)

there is this third item: Q1242632 (remus of course). and the local iw-links realy are mixed up. see User:Akkakk/iw --Akkakk (talk) 00:59, 14 March 2013 (UTC)
Yeah, but I think on Wikidata this is handled correct now. All Remus entries are Remus articles, all Romulus items are Romulus articles, only that one Romulus and Remus article is about Romulus only, as far as I can tell. This one should be moved if I'm right. Merging the items is probably not appropriate, as there it's not really the same subject, see also Wikidata talk:Interwiki conflicts#Sibling conflicts where I was asking about cases like this (this is a rather clear case where there are some overappings - Wikipedias with articles on the sibling duo and individual articles on Romulus and sometimes Remus). I'd say, after checking the hy: article, local interwikis should be removed for these articles, even though we then lose connections between some of the articles (we're back on the generic sibling group problem). --YMS (talk) 10:20, 14 March 2013 (UTC)

deleted lots of local iw-links. should be resolved now. --Akkakk (talk) 22:55, 3 April 2013 (UTC)

These are not the same thing. Mozilla add-ons include extensions (XPI), themes (background themes and complete XPI themes) and plug-ins (NPAPI). --AVRS (talk) 20:34, 3 April 2013 (UTC)
But some of the articles are not only talk about extension but theme? and I think themes are also a kind of extension. tntchn Comment · Contribs 02:55, 4 April 2013 (UTC)
Then those articles may be about add-ons. Themes are distinguished from extensions, even though complete themes are also distributed as XPI files. I think the article in ca.wiki and in es.wiki are not only talking about extensions but mentioning themes with Google Translate? tntchn Comment · Contribs 11:24, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

Indeed, the article in es.wiki mentions themes (though that might have been a mention of Persona Plus, an extension for creation and use of background themes) and lists plug-ins. I've changed it to be about add-ons generally: w:es:Complemento (Mozilla).
The Catalan [ca] article is about extensions, mentioning themes as a separate entity in the context of the creation of a reviewed repository, but says that in English extensions are also called "add-ons". I've removed the mention of "add-ons", it may have been a mistake.
[en] and [uk] are certainly about add-ons generally.

Traffic circle vs Roundabout

Items involved: Q1529Talk, Q1525Talk Status:     resolved

  • Note, interwiki have us believe that en: traffic-circle = fr: rond-point and en: roundabout = fr: carrefour giratoire. But actually carrefour giratoire matches both traffic circle and roundabout, while rond-point (as defined in the article) is something completely different.
  • In French a Rond-point is a name of a traffic-circle or a roundabout (that's why many people think the two terms are equivalents). Otourly (talk) 21:37, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
  • The usage in English is iffy. The traffic engineers tend to mean roundabout to signify a particular subspecies of circular interchange, while in the US traffic circle coloquially subsumes all types. I believe in Britain roundabout is the comprehensive term but those that don't conform to the engineers' restricted definition have been largely eliminated. Mangoe (talk) 15:19, 7 March 2013 (UTC)
  • We have the same thing in France : « carrefour giratoire » is the technical term, used by enginneers for the 20th century, and « rond-point » is the common term used by people. « rond-point » is older and derived from the ancient meant a circular place in the planning of the classical period. - Bzh-99 (talk) 11:14, 16 March 2013 (UTC)

That is a problem for es.wikipedia, not Wikidata. The English link is there because the [[en:La mulata]] at the bottom of the edit summary is overriding the information from Wikidata. Cheers. Delsion23 (talk) 17:42, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

Tabbed Browsing vs Tab

Items involved: Q849450Talk, Q10590816Talk Status:     resolved

The first term (tabbed browsing) describes the internet browsing using a Tab. The second one (only Tab, en-wp "Tab (GUI)") describes only the object itself or in general. There are many interwiki conflict with these two items (have a look at the de-wp). I chose the first item (en "Tab (GUI)") for the Tab itself, the second für tabbed browsing. I swaped already the two de-wp links. Thank you for your help. --#Reaper (talk) 12:47, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

Edit: No, I think I did something wrong. I currently don't know for sure, what means what. It seems that in the german wp is something redundant. I've to check this first. My fault. --#Reaper (talk) 13:02, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

I have created Q10729326 for pirates as we may need this for other uses as well, and because it is a bit difficult to add statements to an item that refers both to an activity and to a person. I have moved some, but not all of the relevant articles (many sitelinks, and some languages are a bit obscure) However, that loses some interwiki.Ã potential solution for this sort of case would be a Tempate:RelatedInterwikis that could grab the interwikis from a related item. --Zolo (talk) 14:21, 8 April 2013 (UTC)

The german "Satz" used in a mathematical context refers to the english "Theorem". Its a proven statement from axioms alone. The german "Theorem" is used more liberal (at least according to the german wikipedia) as it is used for certain scientific statements aswell. If the Luxembourgish wikipedia article for [Q1497813]] is rougly the same as the german article (my command of the language is, well, nonexistent) then [Q1497813]] should probably be deleted.

I have no idea what to do with the apparent semantic differences between the german and the english "Theorem". As a native speaker of German I wouldn't use "Theorem" when it comes to scientific statements, but it seems that some people do. Should I create a new item for the German "Theorem"?79.226.59.29 00:27, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

In Italian, passato prossimo is for actions related to the present, it more or less clearly emphasizes a result. Passato remoto is tipically for actions not related to the present: e.g. the English "was born" should be translated with passato prossimo when speaking of a living person, otherwise with passato remoto. In Spanish it is quite similar in theory, but there are differences in practice; in Italy most native speakers are not at all reliable on the subject, depending on where they are from. And I would non even dare to try to compare this with what happens in germanic or in slavic languages. --Pegasovagante (talk) 22:14, 17 August 2013 (UTC)

English has two articles:

Most interwikis currently go to 1, but many of them are actually about 2. There may be tricky cases, for instance es:Historia del arte is about 1., but its first sentence suggests it is about 2.Zolo (talk) 10:11, 15 November 2012 (UTC)
