- But if they're synonyms they should be merged? Or what's the use behind duplicate items? I'm not saying they should be merged, but if they're distict (which makes sense as they have often differing articles) the difference should be made clear. - @Jonathan Haas: I think it's important to understand that WD needs to be language independent and that WD items are "concepts" rather than Wp article links. And "synonym lists" often list words that somehow overlap but usually is not exactly the same. The purpose of such a list is to help you find the "correct nuance of word". If all synonym words meant exactly the same it would probably not be separate words. Also note that the same applies for dictionaries. Most often translations modify the meaning of the word slightly and a translator needs to be very careful to know which nuance was originally intended.
- From German perspective, what do you think about the word "schummeln"? I found it in this article.
- I think WD do explain the difference properly. fraud (Q28813) is a subclass of cheating (Q19). Compare how chinos (Q1074407) relates to trousers (Q39908). For many purposes they are "synonyms" but you cannot claim that any pair of trousers are chinos, so they are not the same concepts.
- In words "cheating: breaking of rules" and "fraud: deception". You cheat if you take a short cut at a marathon race. It's fraud if you try to cover up and lie about it. Fraud is also if you say you are going to help someone carry their valuables, but instead run away with them. That's less considered cheating, but since lies are "against the moral rules" it's also breaking rules.

- @Jagulin:. I think your explanation makes sense. The problem I saw is that both items are labeled "Betrug" in german description, which means "fraud". Renaming Q19 "Schummeln" might be an option, but Schummeln specifically means "minor cheating" like in school or when playing family games, fraud with money and so on wouldn't be considered schummeln.
