sternum (Q8481)/human sternum (Q8494)Edit

Items involved: Q8481Talk, Q8494Talk Status:     in doubt

sternum and Human sternum are same. Sternum should be used as a general term. Human Sternum for Human bone. Merge them?? --Nizil Shah (talk) 23:01, 7 November 2012 (UTC)
  • No, don't merge them. There are two articles in en and pl, one about human sternum and the other about sternum in general.--Snaevar (talk) 01:12, 15 November 2012 (UTC)
Most of the articles currently listed under sternum seem to actually be about the Human sternum and thus should be moved under Human sternum, IMO. Kaldari (talk) 22:43, 7 December 2012 (UTC)

Comment. Based on titles, interwikis are correct. Based on content, most articles in the genral sternum article seem to deal only with the human sternum, but as titles may be more stable than content, I think it makes sense to keep things this way. --Zolo (talk) 16:11, 5 April 2013 (UTC)

The pages look all like to handle the human sternum, but the title says it is about the sternum generally. barge (Q16518)/hopper barge (Q16523)Edit

Items involved: Q16518Talk, Q16523Talk Status:     in doubt

* Q16518 vs Q16523: see talk:Q16518--Zolo (talk) 10:51, 8 November 2012 (UTC)
  • Q16158 flat-bottomed boat, regardless of propulsion type
  • Q16523: non-self-propelled flat-bottomed boat

Note that French barge is in 16523 while English barge is in 16158. --Zolo

I relied on images in articles and Google Translate (reading the article, not just the title). However there appears to be problems:

  • most entries refer to ships that "usually" have no engine. As this implies that is sometimes has, I classified them in Q16518. An additional reason for that is that those articles usually have photos of self-propelled barges.
  • definitions may be imprecise, or may vary across languages or countries. For instance:

--Zolo (talk) 10:50, 8 November 2012 (UTC)

Self-propelled barge in Russian is ru:Самоходная баржа, and ru:Пениш stands for self-propelled barges common mostly in Belgium, Netherlands and France, and having specific dimensions corresponding to Freycinet class, which, in turn, correspond to channel and lock dimensions. ru:Баржа and uk:Баржа stand for flat-bottomed cargo ship (small boats are excluded) regardless of propulsion type. In Ukrainian, uk:Самохідна баржа would stand for self-propelled one, and uk:Пеніш would stand for self-propelled Freycinet-class one (both not available yet).

So, possible concepts seem to be:

  • flat-bottomed boat regardless of propulsion type
  • self-propelled flat-bottomed boat
  • self-propelled flat-bottomed boat of Freycinet class
  • non-self-propelled flat-bottomed boat

Olexa Riznyk (talk) 07:27, 19 April 2013 (UTC)

See User:Akkakk/iw#Q16518

  • I suppose that ru:Баржа, uk:Баржа и en:Barge should be in one item. Infovarius (talk) 14:30, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

I put fi:Tiibet in Q17252 Tibet and added fi:Tiibetin autonominen alue, which was in no item, into Q17269 Tibet Autonomous Region, checked to see that the es, cs and la pages were where they were supposed to be, and checked to see that all interwiki links on the en page were in the item (and added the only one that wasn't). So that issue is taken care of. However, looking through the articles listed in each item, there are many articles in Q17252 Tibet that state, roughly, "Tibet is an autonomous region" and try to encompass both the geographical and the political region or are not sure which they should document. User:Akkakk/iw/include#Q4122341 --Akkakk (talk) 17:14, 7 April 2013 (UTC)

Hello, the title of this section is not totally accurate. Q...42 is a concrete patriotic song of the 19th century ("Das Lied der Deuteschen", serving since 1922 as the German national anthem), and Q...41 is the German national anthem, a position that has been filled in by different songs. Some language versions have this neat distinction, as German Wikipedia, others take Q...42 (the song) and treat it as if it were the same (e.g., Dutch Wikipedia). By the way, I think that the aliases in the items should be altered. / This problem occurs with several national anthems. In the USA and France, for example, the specific song and the anthem are more or less the same. In Austria, there have been changes, but nonetheless, German Wikipedia has a redirect from "Land der Berge, Land am Strome" to "Österreichische Bundeshymne" [Austrian Federal anthem] (Q126658) (the song is the anthem only since 1947). The German article treats "previous Austrian anthems". Ziko (talk) 14:18, 8 September 2013 (UTC)

Great explanation, why don't you work it into the English and German descriptions of both items? Littledogboy (talk) 15:16, 9 September 2013 (UTC)
Thanks, I left something on the talk page too. But actually this must be solved in the language version. Ziko (talk) 20:04, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

Q2403634/Q5378501 (gear ratio/mechanical advantage)Edit

Items involved: Q2403634Talk, Q5378501Talk, Q2644088Talk Status:     not resolved

Q5378501 discusses mechanical advantage; Q2403634 discusses gear ratios. The En-wiki interlanguage links are in significant conflict. The ones I haven't been able to resolve are: da:Gearing, de:Übersetzung_(Technik) eo:Transmisia rilatumo, and sv:Kraftöverföring. On some I have a decent guess based on equations, but I'd appreciate if people who speak the relevant languages could look into these. — PinkAmpers&(Je vous invite à me parler) 10:21, 26 February 2013 (UTC)
Tried to look into this a bit...
  • I put da:Gearing as mechanical advantage. The Danish word gear seems not to mean a gear but a device in English, and I kind of understood the article via Swedish.
  • de:Übersetzung (Technik) seems too general: "In mechanical engineering (I guess), a device that translates the value of a physical quantity into another value of the same quantity with both values remaining in a constructively stable ratio with one another is described as Übersetzung or Transmission." Then again, the article also states that the term is used also for the measure that is the ratio itself, with the symbol i.
  • sv:Kraftöverföring is about transferring force between, for example, a motor and a wheel. I think it's neither of these items.
  • eo:Transmisia rilatumo is about some ratio categorised in hydraulics: "The inverse value of the transfer of movement frequency in a constant state."
I'm tempted to think only the Danish one was about the exact same concept as one of the items. I'm not sure about the German one though, and I didn't quite get the hang of what the Esperanto article was going on about. Enoirditalk 14:44, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

Q200297/Q1434958 (thermal power plant/fossil-fuel power station)Edit

Items involved: Q200297Talk, Q1434958Talk Status:     not resolved

ja:火力発電所 should be removed from Q200297 a it is correctly listed under Q1434958. If Q1434958 refers to "fossil-fuel power station" de:Kohlekraftwerk, nl:Kolencentrale, nn:Kolkraftverk, sv:Kolkraftverk and probably other language links as well should be removed from this site, as they treat coal fired power stations only.--ペーター (talk) 10:41, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
I have created a new item called "coal power plant" here for the links that seem to be specific to coal. ja:火力発電 is already present in item Q1434958. Should this be moved to a new item called "thermal power generation"? ja:火力発電所 seems to translate to "thermal power plant" which is what the item at Q200297 currently describes. Delsion23 (talk) 22:21, 8 March 2013 (UTC)
Moved some more (cs, pl) to Q6558431. --Matthiasb (talk) 17:50, 12 March 2013 (UTC)
The Japanese word 火力発電所 is usually (mis-)translated "thermal power station" by the media. However, the English and German wikipedia articles on thermal power generation include nuclear, solar thermal and geothermal power generation, while the Japanese wikipedia article on 火力発電所 treats fossil fuel power stations only. The word 火力発電所 (as well as the English word "thermal power station") is used by the media in Japan to contrast "fire power stations" (literal translation of 火力発電所) against nuclear power stations. I therefore removed 火力発電所 from Q200297.--ペーター (talk) 11:48, 18 March 2013 (UTC)

Q2626877/Q1367215 (nautical terms)Edit

Items involved: Q2626877Talk, Q1367215Talk Status:     not resolved

There seems to be two problems here:
  1. German wikipedia has split the list into two: de:Liste seemännischer Fachwörter (A bis M), de:Liste seemännischer Fachwörter (N bis Z) and also has the article de:Seemannssprache
  2. French wikipedia has two articles: fr:Lexique de la navigation à voile, fr:Vocabulaire maritime

Maybe some French and German speakers could help sort it out.

  1. The both lists correspond to Q2626877, but are split, as was said, while de:Seemannssprache has nothing to do with both entries above, therefor will create item for that one. (Q7041009)
  2. The first French is a part of the second list, as it contains only terms used when sailing (as in sail boats). I would put the second into Q2626877, the first would stand alone.
  3. I also think that pt:Anexo:Terminologia náutica should be moved into Q2626877.
--Matthiasb (talk) 18:10, 12 March 2013 (UTC)
I agree with your suggestions. Maybe German wikipedia can be convinced to merge de:Liste seemännischer Fachwörter (A bis M) and de:Liste seemännischer Fachwörter (N bis Z)? It seems to have been split because of the limitations of article size in "the old days" (see de:Diskussion:Liste seemännischer Fachwörter (A bis M)#Zu groß?. I believe this technical problem of slow page loading is less relevant today. --Wikijens (talk) 12:33, 13 March 2013 (UTC)

Q37137 (Contralto/Alto)Edit

Items involved: Q37137Talk, Q6983813Talk Status:     not resolved

Q37137 refers to Contralto in some languages and to Alto in other languages. en:Alto and fr:Alto (voix) have no Wikidata item. Rsocol (talk) 19:15, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
By reading Talk:Q37137, I understand that the confusion is caused by de:Alt (Stimmlage), which could mean en:Contralto as well as en:Alto. Maybe we should have three items: the first for en:Alto, fr:Alto (voix), etc; the second for en:Contralto, fr:Contralto, etc; and the third for de::Alt (Stimmlage), hu:Alt and other languages which use the same term for both notions. Rsocol (talk) 19:35, 11 March 2013 (UTC)
I'll have a go at sorting it out. I think that there should be two items, one for alto and one for contralto. It seems that some languages have an article on the two, and other languages have an article on "alto" which then has a sentance or section on "contralto". I'll mark as resolved if I find no problems. Delsion23 (talk) 11:04, 12 March 2013 (UTC)
You were right that some of them treat the two almost equally, which made things difficult. Can someone please have a look over items Q37137 (contralto) and Q6983813 (alto) to check to see if this solution is ok. If not, we may need to create a new item for "alto and contralto". Q48349/Q499146 (Empire/Imperium)Edit

Items involved: Q48349Talk, Q499146Talk Status:     not resolved

Q48349 seems to concern the concept empire in general, while Q499146 concerns "imperium" in a more specific Roman context. I'm not sure in which group la:imperium itself belongs. I'm also not sure about the Slavic languages. Most of them seem to have an -i(j)a ending for general "empire" and a latin -ium ending for the specific Roman. Bosnian bs:Imperija is however connected to the second group, and instead they have bs:Carstvo (as also Serbian Царство etc) in the general Q48349 group. Are these basically synonyms? The apparently cognate Croatian term hr:Carstva is strangely connected to Q1211369 (The empire on which the sun never sets). • It seems ru:Кофейня does not have equivalences in other wikis. The closest concept in English is Coffeehouse, but it redirects to Cafe in now. Cafeteria == ru:Столовая (however, there was in Russian in 1950-1980s "кафетерий", a strange cafeteria without chairs, with high tables, bezik (talk) 19:43, 27 March 2013 (UTC)

Q1125312 (Microbiological culture)/KultivierungEdit

Items involved: Q1125312Talk, KultivierungTalk Status:     partially resolved

In the German WP there are 2 articles: de:Bakterienkultur is contained in Q1125312 and you can see similarities to en:Microbiological culture. But the article de:Kultivierung is about the same topic, describing more how to get a microbiological culture, it can be compared with es:Cultivo (microbiología), but this Spanish article is part of Q1125312. In nl:Reincultuur (microbiologie) – also part of Q1125312 – the topic is „Reincultuur“ (= „Reinkultur“ in German), which matches a chapter of de:Kultivierung. I don't speak enough French or any of the other languages to compare the content of the articles in Q1125312, but it looks like there is need for more than one Wikidata item. Any other opinions? --A doubt (talk) 22:39, 1 April 2013 (UTC)
Hopefully I have solved the interwiki conflict by creating a new item Q10297148 (bacterial culture) for some of the WP articles. Others stay in Q1125312 (microbiological culture), while some are in item Q357279 (cultivation in a general biological meaning). But I am not familiar with all languages involved, so it would be helpful if other users would check the items. --A doubt (talk) 22:59, 4 April 2013 (UTC)

Some languages have one word for 2 (first or last). Present order(may be wrong?): plane figure / curve / its length. Also in topology - more general set. Infovarius (talk) 20:15, 9 April 2013 (UTC)
Given that I was adressed in such unkind manner, I will respond here: I have tried to fix the conflicts created by Infovarius (mostly regarding eswiki links) and these were the results: 1, 2 and 3. I haven't marked the issue as resolved because I think it needs to be further reviewed. Andreasmperu (talk) 19:37, 10 April 2013 (UTC)
Sorry for unkindness. The reason was that I tried to fix the conflicts, and you have restored the initial wrong links. As I said en:Circumference has no connection to be:Акружнасць. "Circumferència" (catalan) and "circunferencia" (spanish) mean the curve as their main meaning, as it used to happen in other languages some time ago (e.g. french).--Pere prlpz (talk) 15:19, 16 May 2013 (UTC)

I think the questions about the curve and its length are quite set, but I'm concerned with the bounded figure (the surface inside a circle). ro:Disc (formă geometrică) and fr:Disque (géométrie) deal with the planar figure, but they are linked to en:Disk (mathematics) and ca:Disc (topologia) an es:Disco (topología) and other articles which are about the topological concept of disk. I think ro:Disc (formă geometrică) and fr:Disque (géométrie) should be moved to link to ca:Cercle and es:círculo (linking those to en:area of a disk is debatable but I think it's useful, too).--Pere prlpz (talk) 16:23, 16 May 2013 (UTC)

Furthermore, it:cerchio, ast:círculu and an:cerclo should remain linked to ca:Cercle and es:círculo, instead of other articles more related to topology. As I said, ro:Disc (formă geometrică) and fr:Disque (géométrie) (planar figures) are more related to these than to en:Disk (mathematics) (mostly a topological concept).--Pere prlpz (talk) 15:50, 27 May 2013 (UTC)

Yes, in French there are two words: "langage" for the general human faculty and "langue" for individual languages. Denmark/Kingdom of DenmarkEdit

Some of the articles on Q35, such as en:, are about both the Kingdom and the constituent country of the kingdom which is an EU member, and some, such as da:, are specifically about the constituent country. (The English article, for example, shows two maps in the infobox, one of Denmark in the EU with other parts of the kingdom in gray, and one of the entire kingdom.) Should some of the Q35 articles be moved to Q756617? Or should a new item be created for articles that specifically cover both topics? --Yair rand (talk) 04:26, 8 May 2013 (UTC)
I think that the pages about both Denmark and the Kingdom of Denmark should be moved to Kingdom of Denmark, because Denmark falls within the Kingdom and not the other way around. I don't prefer to make another item. Sander.v.Ginkel (talk) 15:40, 15 May 2013 (UTC)
en:Denmark is mostly about Kingdom of Denmark (although for instance some of the data in the infobox is only about Denmark proper). So from a database point of view it would be correct to move the article and other similar articles to Q756617, but it would also be preferable if redirects could be left in Q35 so articles about Denmark in other languages can have language links to these languages. Byrial (talk) 16:37, 15 May 2013 (UTC)
I don't think that adding a bunch of redirects is the typical way to fix issues like this. I think wikitext redirects in the articles themselves are supposed to be used in this situation. --Yair rand (talk) 22:36, 19 May 2013 (UTC)

I doubt that, because it can only be assumed that the corresponding term is any language would be vernacular and imprecise, not the accepted classification of simians. As far as I know, the only concordant language system in taxonomic literature is Chinese and would have assumed that Russians would be citing the same nomenclature used by the Euro language wikipedias, rooted in the romantic language structure with stems in numerous other languages. The social construct 'monkey' would have the same latitude as it does in the English language, this term is unrelated to any agreed system of nomenclature. I made changes that accord with sources in English, and most interlanguage accord with that, what is the arrangement of simians at the Russian wiki? municipality/capital region/city? Seems to be quite a mess with the interwikis. --Wikijens (talk) 10:26, 25 May 2013 (UTC)

Looks ok to me - three wikidata pages each with a clearly defined scope. Labels in other languages seem to reflect the same scope. Wikipedia page links seem to follow the scope as well. Filceolaire (talk) 23:15, 31 May 2013 (UTC)

The scope of Q9005 is quite odd, actually. It's more or less Q9005 = Q239 + Q240 where Q240 also includes the subject of Q239 by definition. Then people move interwikis around without actually understanding what the articles in different languages actually say. In my opinion, Q9005 is completely redundant to Q240. — Yerpo Eh? 06:26, 7 June 2013 (UTC)
I totally agree with you that most people move interwiki without understanding. This is quite frustrating and one of the reasons I participate less an less in Wikidata. About Q9005: It's not completely redundant to Q240. There a several Wikipedias that distinguish clearly between Brussel as a city (Q239) and the region of Brussels-Capital (Q240), and some Wikipedias that don't. In Q9005, both things are described. Geographically, Q9005 and Q240 may be identical, but on the statistic level for example, there are very different data. In a long term, Q9005 should become obsolete, but only if all Wikipedias start to distinguish between Brussels as a city and as a region correctly. --Monsieurbecker (talk) 04:20, 2 September 2013 (UTC)

There's only one Occitan article in Q9005 which was created by a bot (why?). It refers to Brussel/Bruxelles as a city of 1 mln inhabitants, which is factually incorrect. That article should be deleted, and as a result Q9005 could cease to exist as well. I've asked the WP.OC admin Boular to look into it. --Midas02 (talk) 09:17, 29 August 2013 (UTC)

It's a mess and whoever did it left several article disconnected, for example hu:Brüsszel Fővárosi Régió, hr:Regija glavnoga grada Bruxellesa, ro:Regiunea Capitalei Bruxelles (diff). Littledogboy (talk) 22:58, 1 September 2013 (UTC)
Q14467584... Littledogboy (talk) 14:10, 2 September 2013 (UTC)

Probably a systematic mistake – frwiki mentions three concepts, not 2:

  1. agglomération de Bruxelles
  2. Région de Bruxelles-Capitale
  3. Ville/commune de Bruxelles

Littledogboy (talk) 14:13, 2 September 2013 (UTC)

Ok, I've done some clean-up between Q239/Q240 and tried to put the articles in the correct categories. The ones that don't belong to either, the left-overs, have been added to Q9005. However. I checked all languages, and the vast majority of the articles are extremely faulty, probably because they were translated from other articles which were faulty to start with, so chosing between Q239 and Q240 is sometimes arbitrary. Much more can't be done without rewriting each and every article. They are combining data of the municipality with those of the region, leading to hybrid articles that are neither one nor the other. They often describe Brussels as a city of 1 mln inhabitants, which would correspond to the greater Brussels region. But with the institutionary reforms of 1989, the greater Brussels area was turned into an official region - not a city -, la Région de Bruxelles-Capitale, so all articles in Q9005 should ultimately be merged with the ones in Q240. The concept of Q9005 was discussed and rejected about 3 years ago in WP.NL because it doesn't offer anything else than wat Q240 should already be describing. For correct data about Q239 and Q240, please check WP.NL and not WP.FR as the latter contains numerous mistakes as well. --Midas02 (talk) 01:48, 6 September 2013 (UTC)

in most languages, the articles on games of chance and gambling are the same (the rare exceptions are English, Catalan, Hebrew and Indonesian). In most cases, the literal translation of that article is "game(s) of chance" (jeu de hasard, Glückspiel, Juegos de azar, Hasartmäng, Igra na srečo and so on). Having an item for games of chance is very useful to classify other items but the current situation makes this difficult. One possibility is to merge the article to either en:Gambling or en:Game classification but I'm sure someone has a better idea.
In English, the word "gambling" carries the idea of betting money, while "game of chance" is simply a game based on chance (no money is necessarily involved). But the French article says "le même terme jeux de hasard désigne à la fois des jeux impliquant un processus aléatoire [games of chance] et des jeux d'argent pratiqués par les adultes [gambling etc] ...". It is confusing. I don't know about other languages. This, that and the other (talk) 10:26, 15 June 2013 (UTC)

I also tried to clean up any conflicting local language links (which will probably lead to my getting blocked on a bunch of random wikis :P ), but I'm not positive I got them all. I noticed that the Japanese Wikipedia has a separate page specific to the Eastern or Later Han Dynasty, located at w:ja:後漢. I wanted to add an interwiki link to the relevant EN WP content, located at w:Han Dynasty#Eastern Han. Note that the English Wikipedia does not have a separate page specific to the Eastern Han -- this content is instead contained as part of the w:Han Dynasty page. There is an w:Eastern Han page, but that's just a redirect to w:Han Dynasty#Eastern Han.

However, attempting to add the relevant link on the Q1147037 page here results in the following error, when attempting to use either Eastern Han or Han Dynasty#Eastern Han:

Site link Han Dynasty already used by item Q7209.

Before the rollout of this Wikidata approach to interwiki links, it was possible to create a link from one independent article to a subsection of an article on another wiki. In cases where one language wiki has an independent page and the other language wiki does not, this approach works to direct readers to the relevant content.

Is this approach impossible now? If so, where do we discuss changing this behavior? -- Eiríkr Útlendi │ Tala við mig 20:12, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

It is impossible to do it in Wikidata and that is unlikely to change. You can still add the link directly in Wikipedia. --Zolo (talk) 20:22, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
This seems to be a very grave shortcoming, given the large number of cases where one article in language A matches multiple articles in language B. What are the technical reasons for this limitation? -- Eiríkr Útlendi │ Tala við mig 21:23, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
Wikidata is not only about the interwikis (phase 1) but also about the data (phase 2), which must be associated with one and only one page/topic. --Izno (talk) 22:48, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
Well, that is the point, I think. Look for example at glassblower (Q1413824) and glassblowing (Q12185286) – the topic is the same, we could merge, but we want both terms on wikidata. Redirects would be the solution. Littledogboy (talk) 22:57, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
  • An additional case in point is Q2003257 Cirth. This appropriately links to the article about the Cirth runes by Tolkien on most of the indicated wikis, except for German -- which has one article about both the Cirth and the Tengwar scripts (de:w:Tengwar und Certar). Notably, the Wikidata page for Tengwar at Q473725 has no German Wikipedia link (and with the current restrictions, cannot have one), and likewise the German wiki article at de:w:Tengwar und Certar only links to the articles about the Cirth script on other wikis, while the articles on other wikis about the Tengwar script incorrectly do not link to the German article, and actually don't link to any German WP article at all. This is less than optimal, and actually a regression compared to the older manual approach -- compare this revision to the English wiki article on the Tengwar script, or this revision to the Japanese wiki article, or this revision to the Korean wiki article, or this revision to the Czech wiki article, etc. etc, all of which previously did correctly link to de:w:Tengwar und Certar, but which no longer have this link after changing over to rely on Wikidata.
The real world is messy. Insisting on one-to-one matching with no redirects is not going to be very complete, nor very useful, and it will give users the incorrect impression that other-language wikis do not have corresponding content. -- Eiríkr Útlendi │ Tala við mig 18:19, 30 July 2013 (UTC)

Items involved: Q1485229Talk, Q13374616Talk Status:     not resolved

The english page on Panagia / Panhagia does enumerate the different meanings in a nice way; the Panagia entries in other language versions usually concern only one specific meaning (german / italian: type of icon; russian / serbian / finnish: Enkolpion with icon of the Theotokos). Additionally, besides these abstract meanings, the are certain geographical entities named Panagia (see disambiguation pages). Is there a way to reconcile the situation? --Fl.schmitt (talk) 19:33, 16 July 2013 (UTC)
The Italian article starts with the same definition as the English one... Look at Our Lady of the Sign (Q597232), too, and here, ru:Панагиар. Littledogboy (talk) 23:53, 19 July 2013 (UTC)
ru:Панагиар is a "Panagiar", a liturgical vessel. IMHO distinction should be made between
  1. Panagia as epithet for Mary,
  2. the icon type called Panagia displaying Mary (synonym: Our Lady of the Sign (Q597232)),
  3. the different liturgical objects (Panagia as Enkolpion, Panagia as en:Prosphora), and
  4. finally geographical entities named Panagia.
The problem is that the different wikipedias don't differentiate between them - usually they mix some of those meanings in single articles. So, the question seems to me if Wikidata should be more precise than the different Wikipedias, making it hard to connect them, or if Wikidata should mirror any of the structures used in the different Wikipedias (if so, which of them?). --Fl.schmitt (talk) 13:49, 20 July 2013 (UTC)
This is tricky. Generally, where the items are likely to enter into relationships with others, such taxons, ship classes, names of professions... then keep it as logical as possible. If not, I'd advice to keep the imprecise match to serve Wikipedias better. So in this case, perhaps you could ask, are there many articles about different Panagia-type icons, that would be "instance of" Panagia-type icon.
In future it will be possible to add redirects. For now, the old-style interwikis can be added for example to all the Russian pages, linking to the English page. Littledogboy (talk) 11:23, 22 July 2013 (UTC)

en.wp article is about "Communications in India", which is roughly what seems to be the topic of the non-Latin language links, as far as I can tell from a quick look with Google Translate. de.wp article is about "Internet in India", and since "Communications" doesn't necessarily mean "Internet", I don't think this is a match. Are there better matching articles or should de.wp get its own item for itself? What about the asian languages, are they correctly linked to this item? --YMS (talk) 16:25, 18 July 2013 (UTC)
Not a perfect match, but what is the point in disconnecting? Littledogboy (talk) 20:59, 1 September 2013 (UTC)
Well, if it's not on the same topic, it should not have the same item, for principal reasons and to avoid conflicting statements. However, being an abstract article this probably won't be too much of a problem for now. This s why I was mainly asking if there is a better match. So if there is an article about Internet in India in any other language than in de, those two should be connected rather than what is connected now. If no one is awre of such an article or can find one, I guess this can be closed, though. --YMS (talk) 08:01, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

Kameralismus is a certain policy by the rulers in Germany based on direct influence of the courts to the development of a territory. So the courts would sustain agricultural development after the devastating war 1618-1648 and plant manufactures themselves. It is the German version of Merkantilism, a kind of economic theory as a base to politcs. Kameralwissenschaft means the sciences and teaching of oeconomics, bookkeeping and gouvernment neccessary to maintain the policy of cameralism - somehow the predecessor of todays economic studies, clearly focused on educating people for ruling and development of the territory. However these people also had to learn the Kameralismus economic theory, as todays economic studies contain the learning of the principles of capitalism and markets.--Giftzwerg 88 (talk) 16:06, 9 September 2013 (UTC)

Blackberries are the fruit of the bramble bush. The problem is, in most languages the article for "blackberry" doesn't focus on a specific species of bramble. Arguably, we should have two items, one for the berry (symbolism, culinary usages, tradition role in medicine, etc.) and one for the plant (botanical information, kinship with other plants, etc.), but I don't know to what extent the present two items follow this division across the different languages. Benedicite (Q2929880)/Grace (Q1668249)Edit

Items involved: Q2929880Talk, Q1668249Talk Status:     not resolved

This is my first time here, so I do not know if I am posting at the right place.

In French, the articles Grâces (prière) and Bénédicité refer to approximately the same subject, which is Grace=Tischgebet, etc in Q1668249. Both these french articles could link to Q1668249. However the english article Benedicite refers to another prayer completely. What should be done?  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by PierreLac (talk • contribs).

Bonjour Pierre. Well, first item Q2929880 should be split because the two links there, although they share the same name, are not about the same topic. So I'd remove the French link. Then looking at Tischgebet, it seems Grâces would be the proper link as it mentions avant le repas ... ou après, like the other languages. Bénédicité mentions a prayer only held before eating. Grâces has a lien interne to Bénédicité anyway.
A further option to consider, would be to merge Grâces and Bénédicité into the same article, and make one article redirect to the other. I don't know to which extent these topics are considered to be mutually exclusive, or considered to be more or less synonyms of each other. If no other language makes the distinction, it might be the better solution to merge them.
One last note, I noticed there are no Latin links for these topics, which I find strange for prayers that come from Latin. Maybe you could check the Latin Wikipedia if there are no articles out there that could be added to these topics. Cdt, --Midas02 (talk) 16:39, 23 September 2013 (UTC)

However, from what I can tell, those are no duplicate articles anyway, but a generic one and one specific to the Italian law. If I'm right with this assumption, I don't see a reason why the specific Italian article should be linked to Q19... and the generic one being unconnected to other Wikipedias as the only sitelink of item Q38... Most language versions have only one of these articles, the other being a redirect or non-existent. The existing article typically describes both the story and the character. However some languages, notably Italian and Chinese, have distinct articles with non-trivial content.

I think that merging these items on wikidata would make more sense than creating separate pages in most languages. Before proceeding, the editors in language versions that have two articles should be notified and advised to merge the articles in their language. Here is the list of articles to merge (5 languages) as reported by the wikidata merge wizard:

"Pålegg" is a Scandinavian/Norwegian word for just about anything you put on a slice of bread. "Spread" is soft pålegg. "Cold cut" is meat pålegg. So we have three terms, but only two items? Or maybe a third item already exists? How is pålegg classified in other languages? - Soulkeeper (talk) 17:11, 29 October 2013 (UTC)
In Swedish (closly related to Norwegian), Pålägg is a disambig-item. Smörgåspålägg is (almost) anything you can put on a Sandwich, while Kallskuret is only meat (ham and sausages), prepared to be used on a sandwich or as a part of a smörgåsbord. -- Lavallen (talk) 17:44, 29 October 2013 (UTC)
I see you add a strike to the Scandinavian part, but I would consider it correct. "Pålägg" is the main Swedish term for anything you put on a slice of bread, but since it also could be an economic term, is sv:Pålägg a disambig-page on svwiki. And a Swede would pronounce pålägg and pålegg in the same way. And I would expect anybody from Stockholm, to spell it (incorrectly) with e, since many of them cannot hear the difference between these letters. -- Lavallen (talk) 18:20, 29 October 2013 (UTC)

Agricultural science and AgronomyEdit

Items involved: Q3606845Talk, Q173113Talk Status:     partially resolved

In Italian agronomia is a branch of scienze agrarie, called also agraria (See [1] e [2]). In English agronomy is a branch of Agricultural science as well (see: [3] and [4], [5]. I don't expect distinction to be perfect (and I am not giving any one because it would take too much time and space, I let you do your own research on the sources), but it is clear that in some language the first "term" is less generic than the second.

Unfortunately, in other languages the same root close to "agronomy" is probably used for the generic term. For example in French "sciences agraires" is a rare expression and many dictionares translate the italian "agraria"(="scienze agrarie") with "agronomie". I have the feeling that Pflanzenbauwissenschaften and Agrarwissenschaften should be inverted between the two items or at least the last one should be moved to Q3606845.

In conclusion, there is quite a mess. Just take a look in the interwikis in en:agricultural science. I tried to remove the "free" interwikis but I was reverted by a user who didn't reply to my message.

So, can we just try to revise with reliable sources if the interwikis are ok?--Alexmar983 (talk) 22:03, 14 November 2013 (UTC)

I think I am the one who reversed your edit. Having seen your explanation and agreeing with it yes. By all means continue with the clean up. I apologize for the inconvenience and also do not wish to enter an editing conflict. My reversal of your edit was made in ignorance of your purpose, because I didn't see your explanation. In German, agronomy (Agronomie) is an old fashioned term for agricultural science. At least agricultural science is the more generic term. Q3606845 seems to link the wrong German term, it should be Agrarwissenschaften as in Q173113. See also — Preceding unsigned comment added by (talk) 15:24, 19 November 2013 (UTC)

In music there are two terms related to Q298126 (in some languages they are spelled differently): a sequence of chords and the end of a musical composition. Q1069389 should only include the end and Q14088448 should only include the sequence. Q298126 and Cadence (Q2665078) are disambiguations. sh:Solistička kadenca and sr:Солистичка каденца (Q1069389) are "sub-disambiguations" (even not really) dealing only with these two terms. Items involved: Q454839Talk, Q551800Talk, Q182587Talk, Q1140537Talk, Q1273299Talk Status:     not resolved

There occure some inconsistencies in interwikis.
  • ticket (Q454839) links only to dissambiguation pages, a real item covering the full scope of the term "Ticket" is missing
  • ticket (Q551800) - the linked English Wikipedia article - Ticket (admission) - seems to cover entrance tickets together with transport tickets (tickets to ride), however some linked articles covers only entrance tickets (as an opposite of transport tickets). Some languages have a specific term for entrance ticket (de:Eintrittskarte, cs:Vstupenka etc.) which doesn't include transport tickets (ride tickets).
  • ride ticket (Q182587) - the linked English article is "train ticket", some linked articles are about "transport ticket" generally (including bus tickets, tram tickets, ship tickets, amussement ride tickets etc.). Some languages have a specific word for land-transport ticket /ride ticket (de:Fahrkarte, cs:Jízdenka etc.) (train ticket (Q15306266) set aside now --ŠJů (talk) 17:54, 15 December 2013 (UTC))
  • airline ticket (Q1140537) seems to have no problem (however the problem is whether is should be attributed as a type of ride ticket (Q182587) or shouldn't.
  • electronic ticket (Q1273299) in some languages covers airline tickets only, in some languages covers electronic bus, train, ship or even entrance tickets too. mulled wine (Q6584)/Glogg (Q7723658)Edit

Items involved: Q6584Talk, Q7723658Talk Status:     not resolved

English article "Mulled wine" seems as the same thing as Norwegian "Gløgg". But it is not possible to add the Norwegian language link because of the conflict.
I guess the solution is to have a separate item for the articles who handle only the Nordic version of the drink. The Swedish version sv:Glögg is almost only about the Nordic version (Q7723658), therefor now moved. But I think "Glühwein" is considered to be in the same group of drinks. -- Lavallen (talk) 15:10, 19 December 2013 (UTC)
If you think that the article no:Gløgg is about mulled wine in general (not only the nordic variant), then the link should be moved to mulled wine (Q6584). To me the article looks very much like a mulled wine (Q6584).--Hokanomono (talk) 23:29, 23 December 2013 (UTC)

English label in Q253019 looks similar to many of labels in Q123705 which prevents me from correct russian labelling. I don't know which is ru:Квартал. --Infovarius (talk) 14:40, 19 December 2013 (UTC)
@Infovarius: There is an object for the disambiguation pages Q1437134, one for the subdivisions within cities Q123705, and one for the subdivisiosn of other places (in German: 'Orte, Gemeinden') Q253019. The question what is a 'city' and what not, is not in every country handled equally. However, the English page en:Quarter (urban subdivision) looks for me like the it speacks about a subdivision of cities AND other places, i.e. this would be the union of both indivdual objects. Are there other languages which looks similar to that? Then, one could create a new object linking to the English page. But the Russian page should stay linked to the disambiguation object Q1437134, and ru:Городской_квартал does not yet exists. --Zuphilip (talk) 11:54, 20 December 2013 (UTC)

@Lavallen: Thoughts? --Izno (talk) 13:30, 10 January 2014 (UTC)
The English article "Urban area" "Q702492" is "International". There is also a "Nordic" standard (Sweden, Norway, Finland and Denmark) from 1960 who have another formal standard. (The difference is maybe that a Nordic urban area often is smaller and maybe have larger distances between the houses, compared with an international.) But that standard also allow some local differences between the nations. (In Sweden we are counting the summer and holiday homes separatly, and do not allow to many of them, why a Norwegian urban area does not always fit into the Swedish standard.) SO, I guess we need separate items for "International", "Nordic", "Swedish" and "Norwegian" urban areas. I know that also the Norwegian definition is a little separate from the "Nordic standard" from 1960, so I guess that also need an Item of it own. I do not know if we have any items about Finnish or Danish urban areas and if they have any differences from the Nordic standard. So, I guess we can rename Q6566301 to "Urban area in the Nordic nations" or something like that. Some of the sitelinks maybe have to be moved to "Q12813115". The Danish (a redirect) and the Italian looks like they definitly have to be moved to that item. In Sweden we also have some other definitions named "Fritidshusområde", "Småort" and "Arbetsplatsområde" who are related to Tätort, but they not the same thing. -- Lavallen (talk) 15:15, 10 January 2014 (UTC)

Cannibalization (marketing) (Q1154300)/Cannibal (Q59857)Edit

Items involved: Q1154300Talk, Q59857Talk Status:     not resolved

There are three articles about Cannibalization in English. One is about C in marketing, the next is about C in fiction and the last one about C of machine parts. There also is a disambiguation page, which (unfortunately) is also disambiguating man-eating cannibals etc.

The articles in all the other languages linked at Q1154300 are either about marketing (:ar and :ko), about machine parts (:pl) or both (:nl, :it, :de). None (except the English one) is about fiction.

Therefore I would like to change Q1154300 to link to en:Cannibalization (with or without an additional #Cannibalization), and rename it afterwards, but wikidata will not let me, as the disambiguation seems to be occupied by Cannibal (Q59857).

In my opinion, having this bunch of articles in English is correct, as most articles are quite detailed. Also, not having a bunch of articles in the other languages seems right, as right now, they are not so detailed (also, I guess not all usages of Cannibalization are valid in all of the other languages, eg in German you would rather say "Plagiarism" than "Cannibalization of fiction"). So I give up. --Vwm (talk) 18:13, 20 January 2014 (UTC)

Prirazlomnaya (Q14936000)/Prirazlomnoye field (Q59557)Edit

Items involved: Q14936000Talk, Q59557Talk Status:     not resolved

Hallo dear problemsolvers! maybe the two items could simply be merged, but exactly there is the oil- and gasfield en:Prirazlomnoye field and the building de:Priraslomnaja-platform. Two different details in our natural and man-made environment. So both items should be described a little bit better, links between both items maybe better than a merge, wrong sorted articles should be moved to Priraslomnaja Q14936000 (to move the platform for recycling or for usage in greenpeace-gazprom-whalewatching to reach a longterm economical and ecological bonus is here not possible, unfortunately, global thinking may find real renewable solutions). Is it possible to connect articles by REDIRECTS in Wikidata, so in en-WP the existing REDIRECT en:Prirazlomnaya platform to en:Prirazlomnoye field#Development should be used; and vice versa the (not written) REDIRECT de:Priraslomnoje oilfield (to de:Priraslomnaja platform and similar articles in the other WP-projects. This item should only be connected to the concept of backlight itself. Q12810597 and Q1797988 should be merged to form one item to articles about LED-TV's and another item should be created to connect to "Backlit LED-TV's". Items involved: Q173350Talk, Q3375299Talk Status:     not resolved

(Sorry - I'm new in the interwiki subject :)

In enwiki 'PCB' and 'Perfboard' are separate subjects. (The same sems to be valid for French.)
In dewiki there is only 1 subject covering both:
"Leiterplatte" equals "PCB",
"Leiterplatte#Experimentierplatinen" includes the perfect equivalent of Perfboard: "Lochrasterplatine" (which currently seems not to allow for a direct reference).
As it is, it would be helpful to have "Perfboard" linked to "Leiterplatte#Experimentierplatinen"

- which is currently not possible.

web marketing (Q3008173)/digital marketing (Q1323528)Edit

Items involved: Q3008173Talk, Q1323528Talk Status:     not resolved

The italian pege about it:Web marketing looks more like a specific case of en:Digital marketing, whilst fr:Cybermarketing seems more a specific aspect of en:Web traffic, which in French doesn't exist. Please notice that Web marketing on is a redirect to en:Online advertising since 2007, but IMHO marketing is a wider concept than advertisiment.

All the articles show very poor references, so it is quite difficult to have an idea. Even if there are subtle differences, I think in some languages a rearrangement of some concepts in different (maybe new) articles will help in sorting them out in a much clearer way.

I think both are not the same thing, then should not be merged. Also, for example, čeština have two articles: cs:Internace (Internment) and cs:Koncentrační tábor (Concentration camp). Dansk and Deutsch are in the same circumstance. Maybe it is a mistake of English Wikipedia, or explains both themes in the same article. It seems that some wiki distinguish Power (political science) from Power (sociology). As a sociologist, I find this a rather unnecessary division, but for us it means that some interwikis are messed up. On en wiki, there's an article about w:Power (social and political). We need to consider whether we want to have three articles (Power (political science), Power (sociology) and Power (political science and sociology) or just one and clean up the interwikis. I think that power (Q25107) should be the main one, and it should be linked to en w:Power (social and political) which is currently incorrectly linked to more limited political power at Q2101636. While my preferred solution would be to merge all articles on power (s) and power (p), I think we need to 1) retitle power (politics) to Power (political science), 2) create a new entry for power (sociolology) and move the articles between those three families. This began when I removed the interwiki links from the Wikipedia article w:Mindfulness (psychology), which here at Wikidata is mindfulness (Q15009109). I came here to ensure the database for that article would include the links I removed. Right away, I ran into conflicts with mindfulness (Q341045), which holds the links for w:Mindfulness, an article without the "(psychology)" disambiguator. It appears that some of the links at mindfulness (Q341045) have the disambiguator, and perhaps those should go at mindfulness (Q15009109)? Others without qualifiers may need help from those who know the language and can add qualifiers for mindfulness (Q15009109)? All the links to Hesperus and Phosphorus (morning star) were mixed up. I canceled many but not all wrong links but I don't succeed to reintroduce the correct links to the proper page. Pinea (talk) 21:43, 9 May 2014 (UTC) --Pinea (talk) 22:13, 9 May 2014 (UTC)

Let me explain further: A lot of pages related to Hesperus were linked to Phosphorus and viceversa. So the problem was that I had to exchange links and I was not allowed by the system. I had to destroy half of the links before modifying the other half. After several attempts I succeded to fix most of them but not all. For instance I don't know how to handle the eswiki Hespero, still connected to Phosphoros. Moreover I destroyed the links of dewiki hesperos, fiwiki hesperos, eowiki hesperos and nowiki fosforos, and I am not able to link them to the correct page anymore(I really tried only for dewiki). I also don't read chinese, japanese, hindi, persian or arabic titles so I don't have the slightest idea whether they are connected to the proper pages. There are several questions. First why some wiki behave differently than others. Even in wikidata table some links were initially impossible to remove (an error flag was popping out), Gd only knows why. Second the difficulties probably were due to the fact that the software cannot handle easily the replacement of a wrong link with another one. Rather than simply telling that I cannot make the link because another page from the same wiki is already linked, it should suggest me what to do, for instance could allow the replacement provided I also suggest a new link for the other page previously linked there.Pinea (talk) 20:49, 23 May 2014 (UTC)

They are not the same. The Japanese page does not mention the given name specifically, as opposed to the Western language pages which are structured around it. The Japanese page only mentions a stylized form of the name which is used as a stage name by a performer (Isao Yonezaki) who is actually not mentioned on any of the other pages, so there is zero intersection between the Japanese page and the others. --Haplology (talk) 05:07, 23 June 2014 (UTC)

Three way conflict; There are three different things, but different languages decided to merge (different) two or all three into one wikipedia article.

I created Q17315534. This should deal with the product of OKBM, as there are wikipedia articles dedicated to it. The russian brandname for this however simply is the generic term "Reactor for fast Neutrons". The russian wikipedia has only one article for both topics. The latter two should however not be confused because there are other manufatures for "Reactor for fast Neutrons".

The german wikipedia has only one article for Q796821 Q552334.

plum (Q6401215)

EN plum/drupe fruit of Prunus species

NL Kwets/ --

DE Pflaume/Untergattung der Genus Pflaume

Problem in NL: in the Dutch of Belgium (Flemish), I believe “kwets” is an appropriate label, but “pruim” would also be right. In the Dutch of the Netherlands, the word “kwets” refers specifically to Prunus domestica subsp. domestica, so I believe “pruim” would be a more appropriate label for Q6401215 in Dutch.

Pages linked to Q6401215:

If this item includes all species in the subgenus Prunus of the genus Prunus, then EN Plum and FR Prune appear to be correctly linked to Q6401215.

AF Pruim appears (my understanding of Afrikaans is limited) to refer to Prunus domestica only and to distinguish Prunus armeniaca, so perhaps it should be linked to Q44120 instead.

I cannot comment on the other pages linked to Q6401215.

Prunus domestica (Q44120)

EN Prunus domestica/ --

DE Pflaume/Pflanzenart aus der Gattung Prunus in der Familie der Rosengewächse

NL Kwets/ --

Problem in NL: in the Dutch of Belgium (Flemish), I believe “kwets” is an appropriate label, but “pruim” would also be right. In the Dutch of the Netherlands, the word “kwets” refers specifically to Prunus domestica subsp. domestica, so I believe “pruim” would be a more appropriate label for Q44120 in Dutch.

Pages linked to Q44120:

NL Pruim purports to refer to Prunus domestica but also includes substantial discussion and photos of Japanese plums that are not Prunus domestica, so I believe it should be linked to Q6401215 instead (and the taxonomy box amended accordingly).

I cannot comment on the other pages linked to Q44120.

plum (Q13223298)

EN plum/subspecies of plum (Prunus domestica subsp. domestica)

NL Kwets/ --

DE Zwetschge/Unterart der Art Pflaume (Prunus domestica)

These are all appropriate.

Pages linked to Q13223298:

BAR Zwetschgn; DE Zwetschge, EN Zwetschge, and NL Kwets appear to be correctly linked to Q13223298.

FR Prunier de Damas refers principally to Prunus domestica var. insititia (or Prunus insititia) and also lists, e.g., Prunus domestica subsp. syriaca as a variety of Prunier de Damas, so linking FR Prunier de Damas to Q13223298 appears not to be appropriate. I suggest it might be linked to Q149195 instead. However, the French language apparently treats “quetsche” (which is a close cognate of zwetschge, Prunus domestica subsp. domestica, originating from the parts of France that once spoke German) and “prunier de Damas” (damson) as synonymous, so advice from someone with a sound grasp of French and Prunus taxonomy is needed.

I cannot comment on the other pages linked to Q13223298.

Prunus domestica subsp. insititia (Q149195)

EN Prunus domestica subsp. insititia/subspecies of plants, Damson

DE Kriechen-Pflaume/Unterart der Art Pflaume (Prunus domestica)

These are both appropriate.

Pages linked to Q149195:

DE Kriechen-Pflaume, EN Damson, and ES Prunus domestica subsp. insititia appear to be correctly linked to Q149195.

FR Quetsche purports to refer to a variety of Prunus domestica subsp. insititia, but I believe the entire text (except the gallery) may be good as a discussion of Prunus domestica subsp. domestica, so linking FR Quetsche to Q149195 may not be appropriate. I suggest it might be linked to Q13223298 instead.

--Frans Fowler (talk) 00:41, 8 September 2014 (UTC)

As far as I can tell (as a hobby planter also) there is a need to stick to the latin names to keep seperate the different concepts as there lures also Prunus (Q190545) as well. So i think one of the three items Prunus subg. Prunus (Q6401215)/Prunus domestica (Q44120)/Prunus (Q190545) is redundant. So lets explain plums and the relatives: 1. Prunus genus: very broad concept of different plants like cherries, apricots, almonds and plums 2. prunus subgenus prunus: Includes plums and prunus spinosa 3. Prunus domestica (plums), most of the different fruits belong to this species. However although some of the fruits look very similar in fact they are not the same, but they all belong to this group 4. prunus domestica subsp. domestica. Zwetschge is a very special subspecies of plum. You can store it for some weeks, you can dry it very well, flesh adheres not to the stone, it is also used for destilling Schnaps. Other plums are watery and will be gone within a few days. Q13223298 seems approprate, however dawiki Blomme (frugt) and stqwiki Oachteboom seek to describe the broader concept of plums. The frenchPrunier de Damas has no taxon, but lists the different forms of subspecies so this belongs to the broader concept of Plums. There seem to be several redundancies in the french wiki and also different names for ther same thing. 5. Prunus domestica subsp. insititia is also a very special subspecies however the names are many and sometimes the same name is used for different plants or fruits. The greek Δαμασκηνιά however seems to describe prunus domestica. French frwiki Quetsche seems to describe prunus domestika subsp. domestica but gives it another taxon. gawiki Daimsín: don´t know, is a substub. iowiki Quecho seems me to be prunus domestica subsp. domestica.

Items involved: Q37137Talk, Q6983813Talk Status:     not resolved

This two items are about deep womans voices so it seems to be possible to merge the two items. However the term kontraalto(contralto) and alto describe different concepts in some langunages, in some it is the same. In some languages the contralto means a very low womans voice like Zarah Leander, similar to tenor. In other langugaes as italian contralto and alto is the same but only contralto is used. So it is necessary to use one item for the general concept of deep womans voices and one only for the concept of womans voices in tenor range. I find no way to tell which link in which item describes the general and which one the "deeper" concept. --Giftzwerg 88 (talk) 11:45, 9 September 2014 (UTC)

I requested that they split the article and was met with a flat rejection due to the two concepts being ambiguous in Japanese culture. railway (Q22667)/rail transport (Q3565868)/rail guided transport (Q350783)Edit

Items involved: Q22667Talk, Q3565868Talk, Q350783Talk Status:     not resolved

This three elements involve two different concepts. As far as I can see, the two clearly distinct concepts are:
  • Railway / railroad (based on Q22667), i.e. vehicles and infrastructure of train transportation
  • Rail transport (based on Q3565868), i.e. any kind of transport using rails, not only trains, but also urban rail such as underground/subway/metro, trams, funiculars etc.

The third concept (based on Q350783) is unclear and can be hardly distinguished from the previous ones.

For seven languages currently present in rail guided transport (Q350783) I would suggest doing the following:

I would welcome other ideas (especially if anyone sees how rail guided transport (Q350783) is different from the others). If there are no objections, I will do this merge within a few days — NickK (talk) 17:27, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

Update: I see a potential problem with French (and probably Occitan) as it does not seem to have an exact equivalent of rail transport: there is a notion of railway/railroad (fr:Chemin de fer) and a notion "rail transport and cable cars" (fr:Transport guidé), with nothing in between for purely rail transport. Is there an equivalent of fr:Transport guidé in any language or should we leave it alone? @VIGNERON:, you are quite active here so your feedback is welcome — NickK (talk) 17:38, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
Hi NickK,
First, there is already a request up here about railway (Q22667)/rail transport (Q3565868).
Then there is two families of concept : « transport » (the system globally) and « infrastructure » (an element of the system). On the french wikipédia, two articles about railway : fr:Chemin de fer and fr:Voie ferrée (both expression that can translated as « railway » in english ; but the first is more general like « transport by rail » and the second is more « railroad »…). It's very bit subtle but I think the first article could go to the « transport » family and the second on to the « infrastructure » family.
fr:Transport guidé is completely different, it's in the « transport » family but it's more general, it's a superclass of « railway transport ». I can't find any articles about that concept except on the french and occitan wikipedias.
Cdlt, VIGNERON (talk) 18:32, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
Hi VIGNERON, and yes, I have seen this discussion. However, I wanted to add a different angle to it by adding one more related element and merging 3 elements into 2. As far as I can see, we already have a large family of notions:
The issue is that while track (Q160342) is a very clear notion (clearly indentifiable, most of languages have a word for this), it is almost impossible to draw a line between the remaining four. en:Rail transport and uk:Рейковий транспорт have exactly the same meaning (i.e. rail (Q633423) + transport (Q7590)) but do not belong to the same element. Many languages have a distinction between a railway and a rail transport (e.g. cs:Železnice is railway and cs:Kolejová doprava is rail transport, i.e. railway + metro + tram + funicular etc.) but not between a railway system and a railway transport. In pt there are pt:Ferrovia and pt:Transporte ferroviário but they are candidates for merging.
I see the problem in the following view. There are 3-4 notions:
1. Infrastructure of railways and stations (probably at railway (Q22667)) and websites and companies... - branch of economics
2. Only railways and probably their net (probably at track (Q160342)). Not clearly distinguishable from previous, for me.
3. Rail transport (for sure at rail guided transport (Q350783))
3. Train transport = rail transport - metro - trams and so on (probably at rail transport (Q3565868))
So, the existance of 4 items is understandable. --Infovarius (talk) 13:48, 19 June 2015 (UTC)
Thus the question is now different: do we need to split it even further or is it possible to put something together? — NickK (talk) 20:17, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

Macedonicus (Q11774177) has nothing to do with the others as it is about a person named Macedonicus. For the remaining ones... it is complicated. I made some cleanup and got the following:
  • Macedonian (Q568972) for everything related to Macedonian people (or Macedonians)
  • Q3275109 for everything related to Macedonian language (or Macedonian)
  • Macedonia (Q39702), Q15977979, Makedonia (Q1163835), Macedónia (Q1161192) = Macedonia in different spellings. Many languages use different spellings for Macedonia as an independent republic, a Greek and a Bulgarian ethnic territory (the record holder is Hungarian where a Roman province, Greek Macedonia and Republic of Macedonia all have different names); in addition, there are other things (like cities in the USA and Romania or a French salad) named after Macedonia. I don't imagine how we can merge all of these together — NickK (talk) 18:40, 3 March 2015 (UTC)

In the languages I see, dubbing (Q187657) is a stage in film making, whereas voice actor (Q2405480) and dub actor (Q11481802) are occupations which a person can have, so they should not be merged. It is possible that voice actor (Q2405480) and dub actor (Q11481802) should be merged. I see discussion on the Catalan Wikipedia about merging. Perhaps. Both English articles, at least, claim that they're the academic discipline. And so do both Wikidata entities. If we're to say they're separate entities, then we should make sure that claims/properties don't overlap in a conflicting way. Runner1928 (talk) 15:43, 2 April 2015 (UTC)

Suum cuique (Q629199)/Jedem das Seine (Q17101881)Edit

Items involved: Q629199Talk, Q17101881Talk Status:     not resolved

Q629199 is about the Latin phrase "Suum cuique," meaning "to each his own/may all have their due." Q17101881 is about the German translation of the phrase, "Jedem das Seine", notorious for its use as a WW2 death camp motto. enwiki has articles on each, but all(?) other wikis combine both in one. Several also translate "Suum cuique/Jedem das Seine" into the wiki language (bg,fa,hy,ja,ko,ru). "Jedem das Seine" is a far more common title than "Suum cuique", but I think Q629199 should be the default item anyway. N.B. itwiki uses "Cuique suum", semantically identical to "Suum cuique". --Alarob (talk) 21:51, 27 May 2015 (UTC)

state or territory of Australia (Q178712)/administrative territorial entity of Australia (Q4494320)Edit

Items involved: Q178712Talk, Q4494320Talk Status:     not resolved

Discussion at en:talk:States and territories of Australia shows that these two groups appear to be about the same topic. As I speak only English and am not familiar with wikidata, I am not comfortable making such a large change without oversight from someone else. Only the Slovak language (sk) appears in the interwiki links of both groups, and the article for one is a redirect to the article for the other there. --ScottDavis (talk) 13:05, 17 June 2015 (UTC)
@ScottDavis: Hi :) I don't think they are actually the same thing - one is about the states and territories, which are the highest level of subdivision, the other is about subdivisions in general (which includes, but is not limited to, the states and territories), although you do seem to be right that most of them appear to only be talking about the states and territories. The Dutch one isn't though, that's mostly talking about local government area of Australia (Q1867183). ‎I've removed the Slovak sitelink which was redirecting and I've asked on the country subdivision task force page about whether the other links should be moved. - Nikki (talk) 15:40, 17 June 2015 (UTC)

You may remove it from detective (Q842782) if it does not belong there or merge the items if they are about the exact same topic." It looks too difficult for me, but maybe a good detective can solve the mystery. On the Project chat, I was advised to post here, so that's what I do. --Rene1596 (talk) 10:45, 27 June 2015 (UTC)
@Rene1956:, ru:Детектив (профессия) can work in police, and what about fr:Détective? It seems that it is about private profession, so it's different. --Infovarius (talk) 06:35, 29 June 2015 (UTC)
@Infovarius: Thank you for your answer. First, you are right, this is not 100% the same profession. However, it is about 90% the same thing and that's why I would like a link between fr:Détective and ru:Детектив (профессия). Second, there is another problem: I go to en:Detective. I see a link, both to fr:Détective and to ru:Детектив (профессия). Then, I go to fr:Détective and I don't see the link to ru:Детектив (профессия). --Rene1596 (talk) 08:59, 29 June 2015 (UTC)

naval ship (Q177597)/warship (Q3114762)Edit

Items involved: Q177597Talk, Q3114762Talk Status:     not resolved

The first item should be about naval ships. I.e. ships that are operated by a navy, independent of if they are intended to be used for combat (i.e. also the transport ships etc).

The second item should be about ships specifically built for combat. While these often belong to a navy (and are thus a subclass of naval ships) I'm not sure that is technically a requirement.

The Wikipedia links (and therefore labels, aliases and possibly even some of the properties) are a mess. Initially almost all of the articles were connected to the second item independently of which of the two concepts they talked about and some likely combine the concepts in the same article.

Any help with clearing this up and making the two entities more stable would be welcome --André Costa (WMSE) (talk) 13:07, 3 July 2015 (UTC)

I believe the first two are probably the same concept (the activity) whereas the third is for the boats used in this activity. scapegoating (Q2912143)/scapegoat (Q245122)Edit

Items involved: Q2912143Talk, Q245122Talk Status:     not resolved

We seem to need items about
  1. the scapegoat described in a passage of the Bible. fr:Bouc à Azazel, apparently he:שעיר לעזאזל (מצווה)
  2. the more general use of scapegoats in old Middle East (en:Scapegoat)
  3. the figurative concept of scapegoating (en:Scapegoating, apparently en:שעיר לעזאזל (חברה))

Most items in scapegoat (Q245122) seem to mix meaning 1 or 2 and meaning 3. I think that when an item mixes two meanings, it should use the more general item.

If anyone solves this one, can I be pinged :). ? -Zolo (talk) 07:47, 27 July 2015 (UTC)

Q1372064/Christian hymn (Q856713)Edit

Items involved: Q1372064Talk, Q856713Talk Status:     not resolved

Problem with what a psalm/salme is. In English a Psalm is not what in Danish (and other Nordic languages) is typically referred to as a "salme". We could make Q856713 to mean psalm as they appear in the Bible and related books, while Q1372064 to mean songs as used in (Christian?) liturgy (Christian Hymns). Then loads of songs marked up with P31 as a Q856713 should be moved to Q1372064 and some language links should be moved. --Finn Årup Nielsen (fnielsen) (talk) 20:28, 10 August 2015 (UTC)

Italian and some other Wikipedia articles more granular than English Wikipedia, causing two problems needing fixing:
  1. Cannot create an interlanguage link for it:Disastro del Vajont to en:Vajont Dam. Temporarily fixed by adding a link to a redirect at en:Vajont dam disaster which partly works but not entirely.
  2. The draft article at en:Draft:Vajont dam (translation for checking and merging, taken from IT wiki) appears to be interlinked to Italian but should not be - it's a working draft only not an article. Items involved: Q303479Talk, Q16674976Talk Status:     not resolved

I don't quite understand why hermaphrodite and hermaphroditism are separate. After removing two links to stubby and not very informative seeming pages from hermaphrodite (eo and uk), there is no overlap left: none of the other language versions seems to have separate pages for these concepts. So I added the statement that hermaphroditism is "said to be the same as" hermaphrodite. I was about to boldly simply merge the two pages, as they seem redundant, when I reconsidered (I saw that hermaphrodite lists hermaphroditism as "has quality") and decided to ask here for advice how to proceed. I do not wish to screw up the concept of the database, just in case the separation of these two pages was intentional after all. --Florian Blaschke (talk) 03:53, 7 December 2015 (UTC)
