Pronunciation respellings

edit

Northern Sami orthography does not indicate all details of the pronunciation. Pekka Sammallahti's Sámi-suoma sátnegirji, of which the entries can be found in the Álgu database, includes additional marks to indicate pronunciation more accurately:

  • A vertical mark ˈ (U+02C8) is placed between a double consonant to indicate an overlong (quantity 3) consonant.
  • The same mark is used in the combination lˈj to indicate the quantity 3 consonant cluster /lːj/.
  • A macron ¯ is placed above vowel letters to indicate a long vowel (ē, ī, ō, ū), produced by diphthong simplification.
  • A dot is placed below vowel letters to indicate an unstressed vowel that has been shortened (, , ), which in turn hints that preceding vowels are rising/half-long, and preceding quantity 3 consonants are shortened.

These marks can be included in a representation, that is marked se-x-Q7249970 (with pronunciation respelling (Q7249970)). For example: guossi (L22017), duhtodat (L23258), sámegiella (L558). It should not be used on a lemma, as it's not a true variant spelling.

Inflection patterns

edit

Add these using paradigm class (P5911):

Give the word stem using word stem (P5187) as a qualifier on the statement. The word stem should be given as a pronunciation respelling.

Suffixes

edit

All suffixes in Northern Sami have, in theory, two different forms, depending on whether they are affixed to an even-syllable or odd-syllable stem. These two variants can be indicated as:

See -a/-at (L22784) for an example.
