New Persian (Q56356571) describes the Southwestern Iranian language encompassing all dialects and registers constituting the modern form of the Persian language, including the standard varities official in Iran, Afghanistan, and Tajikistan, as well as lects used elsewhere in Central Asia and in the Indian subcontinent. Whether named as Persian, Farsi, Dari, Tajik, or another name, these registers can be modeled as a single coherent language with the benefit of consolidating references associated with each of them.[1]

Orthography

edit

There have been several written registers of New Persian, employing different scripts and spelling conventions. Wikidata allows us to include representations in these different systems alongside eachother on lexemes and forms. The following language codes may be used on New Persian lexemes:

  • fa — Persian, Perso-Arabic script
  • fa-af — Afghan Dari, Perso-Arabic script
  • haz — Hazaragi dialect of Afghan Dari, Perso-Arabic script
  • fa-304 — Indo-Persian, Perso-Arabic script
  • tg — Tajik, Cyrillic script
  • tg-latn — Tajik, Latin script
  • jpr — Judeo-Persian, Hebrew script

There are some historically significant attestations of New Persian in the Syriac and Manichaean scripts, however, the language codes fa-syrn and fa-mani to represent these are not yet available. There are some other codes for New Persian varieties which may be useful to request in the future, such as Dehwari (deh) and Bukhari/Judeo-Tajik (bhh).

Tasks

edit
  • Merge all lexemes previously added as Persian (Q9168), adding Cyrllic script (tg) representations.
  • Add Persian glosses in both writing systems to senses which do not have them, and transcribe glosses which have been added in one writing system but not the other.
