Wikidata:List generation input/Scenario A completing

Scenario A: Completing a list edit

Example scenario: Melissa wants wants to improve the coverage of artworks by Edvard Munch. There are already some. Melissa has recently visited a large exhibition and bought the catalogue. Now she wants to add the missing images to the existing list on Wikipedia.

User quote: “I know the Wikipedia template syntax for tables of images (I use the same one that the Rembrandt-List of images uses). I don’t know Wikidata very well, only from maintaining sitelinks. I heard that the rest of it is cumbersome to use.”

Workflow we assume:

  1. You need to have a reference of items (like an exhibition catalogue)
  2. Find out which items are missing.
  3. Familiarize yourself with the existing template and understand how you need to use it.
  4. You prepare the data in excel/calc and convert that to a template (e.g. table generator or via string-concatination)
  5. Publish list

  • In addition to finding items it can also be challenging to find the required properties. In the example list the item Small Lake with Boat (Q18890868) for example doesn't have an entry for "current location" but one for "collection". A user would have to decide whether they are happy with the "collection" property as it is or whether they really want a "current location" property. I think the information for the "current location" property should be stored in location (P276) and when there are multiple historic locations known there should be starttime/endtime qualifiers. Understanding how "current location" should be translated that way isn't trival. Especially for users new to Wikidata.
There are also cases where there's no existing property and a new property has to be proposed.ChristianKl (talk) 10:50, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
