ویکی‌داده دو هدف اصلی را دنبال می‌کند: گردآوری میان‌ویکی‌های مختلف در یک مکان و فراهم کردن یک پایگاه دانش عمومی برای کل دنیا. یک آیتم قابل‌قبول است اگر و تنها اگر دست‌کم به یکی از دو هدف گفته‌شده جامۀ عمل بپوشاند یعنی بتواند دست‌کم یکی از اصول زیر را در بربگیرد :

1. دست کم یک میان‌ویکی دارای سرشناسی مربوط به یک صفحه در ویکی‌پدیا، ویکی‌سفر، ویکی‌نبشته، ویکی‌کتاب، ویکی‌خبر، ویکی‌گونه، ویکی‌داده، ویکی‌دانشگاه یا ویکی‌انبار داشته باشد.
   1. میان‌ویکی‌ای سرشناس به‌حساب می‌آید که لینک آن به یک صفحۀ بحث یا صفحۀ مدیاویکی، صفحۀ ویژه، صفحۀ کاربری، زیرالگو یا فضای نام پیشنویس نباشد. لازم به توجه است که یک صفحه از یک ویکی‌پدیا نباید بیشتر از یک پیوند در ویکی‌داده داشته باشد و تغییر‌مسیرها پیوندی در ویکی‌داده ندارند.

1. 1. اگر آبتمی مربوط به یک الگو است دست کم باید دو میان‌ویکی داشته باشد و هیچ‌کدام از آن‌ها زیرصفحه /doc, /XML, /meta, /sandbox, /testcases یا /TemplateData نباشند.
   2. If a link is a subpage of a module, it must not be a /doc page.
   3. Category items with a sitelink only to Wikimedia Commons are not permitted, unless either a) there is a corresponding main item which has a sitelink to a Commons gallery or b) the item is used in a Commons-related statement, such as category for pictures taken with equipment (P2033).
   4. On Wikisource, items for mainspace pages, Author pages, Translation pages, and Portal pages are valid, along with items for namespaces that exist on other Wikimedia sites (Category, Project...). Pages in the Index and Page namespaces are not considered valid. The status of subpages of mainspace pages (for example, individual chapters) is undetermined.
   5. On Wikinews, pages in the Comments namespace are not considered valid.
   6. On Wikidata, pages in namespace for structured data (currently includes items, properties, lexemes, EntitySchemas) are not allowed as target sitelink.
   7. On Wiktionary, items for citation pages are not allowed. Main namespace is also excluded because interlanguage links are automatically provided by Cognate.
   8. Status of pages in Meta-Wiki, MediaWiki.org, Wikimania and other supported special Wikimedia sites is undetermined. They should be discussed in a case-by-case basis.
2. آیتم باید اشاره به یک چیز جسمانی یا یک مفهوم مشخص داشته باشد. جوهره موردنظر باید سرشناسی داشته باشد به این معنا که به کمک منبع‌های جدی و در دسترس عموم بتوان آن را توصیف کرد.
3. باید از چند نیاز ساختاری پیروی کند؛ مثلا برای استفاده در اظهارنظرهایی که در زیر آیتم‌های دیگر آورده می‌شود، سودمند قلمداد شود.
