Wikidata:Portal Redesign/Summary of Feedback

This page summarizes feedback provided from the Wikidata community in response to initial Main page redesign planning and a subsequent draft proposal for the new Main page.

Feedback on Main page design

• suggestion to change the image at the top of the page (which was just a placeholder at time of redesign review), criticism of placeholder image of being representative more of the propagation of a virus than something about knowledge/data
• request to change the colours of the banner/header in keeping with Wikidata theming (i.e. red, green, blue)
• request to remove arrows between "quicklinks" (links to important pages immediately featured under the header)
• criticism that the ordering of page content seems to prioritize the "Discover" section over the "Get involved" section; request to have this changed
• request to have a section/area of the page for featuring a different inforgraphic/visual every so often (initially the request was every day; discussion of the feasibility of this timeline followed)
• request to have a more dynamic way of keeping up-to-date with the project (besides the old "News" section), for example by showcasing or highlighting the work of WikiProjects and other initiatives
• suggestion to minimize or de-emphasize the language links
• general feedback in favour of having a more visual page (especially at the top of page)'; comment to have upper part of page less text-based and consumed by language links
• some disagreement over how much content is needed to try and explain Wikidata in the "Welcome" section (with most being more in favour of a concise description that links out to more detailed pages)
• colouring the backgrounds of the boxes just adds more noise; better to leave white
• multilingual features/translations need to be handled carefully; moving down to the very bottom of the page is a problem because it can be easily missed. One possibility is to decrease the size of the links or only include a selection of languages in the language links box

Feedback on Main page implementation

• request to translate the new Main page using Extension:Translate
• comment that space between sections can create big areas of whitespace (reported at resolution 1024x768)
• suggestion that design should not have too many areas that need to be constantly updated as different translations will find it difficult to keep up with changes
