Motivation edit
Deutsche Bahn assigns string abbreviations for each of its stations. This is also known as the DS-100 code and is described at List of Deutsche Bahn station abbreviation. This data present in a number of Wikidata items already but using the generic "station code" property, with varying use of qualifiers (see for example Lindau-Insel (Q828172) or Berlin Hauptbahnhof (Q1097)). Support, but with a different name. It's not an abbreviation but a code. This code applies to a Betriebsstelle, not to a station (Station, colloq. Bahnhof). Station code would be better but is still incorrect.--PhiH (talk) 15:20, 29 August 2020 (UTC)
- Yes, strictly speaking it applies to all operation/control points. The majority of these will be stations. I realize it's not an abbrevation per se, but the German word is Abkürzung and that's how it's usually translated. I don't feel strongly on the name. Mackensen (talk) 17:44, 29 August 2020 (UTC)
- I tried to find the official descriptions used by DB. Code is used once here [1] but Abkürzung der Betriebsstelle actually seems to be the term which is mostly used. The translation in Wikidata for Betriebsstelle is operation point (Q1318558) but I don't know if that is commonly recognizable.--PhiH (talk) 18:30, 29 August 2020 (UTC)
- I don't think a non-specialist would understand operation point without additional context. All stations are operation points (some have multiple), but not all operation points are stations, and ideally we're only importing the former, given that a non-station operation point would probably never have an article. We do have some of the latter floating around because of batch imports, and they're troublesome to categorize. Mackensen (talk) 12:44, 12 September 2020 (UTC)
- This doesn't change the fact that these abbreviations can't be called station abbreviation because this term is made up. They are issued to operation points (by DB Netz, not by DB StuS) and are used for operational purposes. The fact that some stations consist of multiple operation points shows even more clearly that we can't use that name.--PhiH (talk) 17:52, 14 September 2020 (UTC)
