Motivation edit

This is an alternate identifier to Survey of English Place-Names ID (P3627), which would be useful for us to also record, as some external projects appear to be using this as their primary identifier for the dataset rather than the P3627 ID.

Background: Since 1923 the English Place-Name Society (Q5378346) have been collating historical forms of English place-names, which they have been publishing in a multi-volume series of books since 1925, the Survey of English Place-Names (Q105437040). These were digitised between 2011 and 2013, to create an XML dataset created following the Metadata Authority Description Schema (Q6822472) (MADS) standard. The dataset is available for download from [1] under CC-BY-NC-4.0. A website was also created, the Historical Gazetteer of England's Place Names (Q105436896).

Two different IDs have been used by external projects to reference the dataset and link to the website. The MADS IDs were created in the original text extraction. A second sequence of IDs were then coined when the website was created. Our existing property Survey of English Place-Names ID (P3627) was approved corresponding to the second set of IDs, but the website went offline in 2018 before it could be populated. The website has now re-appeared at a new URL, under the management of Dr Paul Ell of Queen's University Belfast, part of the original collaboration that did the data extraction.

I therefore now propose to get Survey of English Place-Names ID (P3627) populated, and I think it would make sense to also add the MADS ID at the same time (hence this proposal), given that this is also recognised by the website, and used externally.

The datatype I am proposing for the MADS ID is an external-ID, since it is an ID, and should have a URL formatter applied; but I would propose to use Survey of English Place-Names ID (P3627) as the main statement property add apply the MADS ID as a qualifier (in the same way that eg PASE name (P2744) is used as a qualifier on PASE ID (P2625)), to keep the two together. -- Jheald (talk) 12:38, 11 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
