Planned useThis property would be used to link QIDs of people, groups of people, or organizations (object) that created objects, artworks, installation, or performance to an instance of an art exhibition art exhibition (Q667276) or similar event. Within the immediate future we intend to link 2, 578 instances of ‘art exhibitions’ (Q667276) to 16,289 artist and constituent entities (see Motivation below).

Motivation edit

In creating a structured dataset of exhibitions at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and other museums and arts organizations, the need for a more precisely defined array of relationships between the exhibition and its numerous constituents and contributors became clear. In particular, for vast swaths of modern art history, we are able to reconstruct which artists had artworks displayed in exhibitions, without having specific information regarding the artwork(s) included. This produced the need for a property that links the artists directly to exhibitions without the artwork connecting the two together. Additionally, this property is more specific than other existing possibilities and will allow us to clearly distinguish an artist whose work was displayed from performers, lecturers, docents, or other individuals that might be categorized by the property P710 “participant”. Participant also seems to imply a more active involvement in an event, whereas many artists, particularly deceased artists, are very far from active participants.DatamuseAttitude (talk) 21:17, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion edit

  •   Comment Doesn't has works in the collection (P6379) work for this (though in the other direction)? But maybe "collection" and "exhibition" are sufficiently distinct that a separate property is needed? It seems like we should have something for this already though. ArthurPSmith (talk) 18:28, 14 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Since there is a possibility that the exhibited artwork is not officially part of the organizing institution's collection, there would need to be a distinction between the "collection" and "exhibition" like you suggest, e.g. some museums display works of art by artist's that are not held in their collection (they might be on loan from other museums or collectors). The proposed property would capture this scenario- I wasn't able to identify an existing property that accounts for this specific relationship/ situation. @ArthurPSmith, I'm the coauthor of this proposal with @DatamuseAttitude. You bring up an important distinction, between what a museum owns and what it exhibits. Museums often own many works by an artist who it nonetheless never exhibits, and certainly museums will exhibit works by artists who it will never collect. So whether and when a specific work or any work by an artist is actually on view can be a critical point of research for many art historians. But more importantly, has works in the collection (P6379) is a relationship between an artist and an organization (the museum). We need a property connecting the artist and an event (an exhibition). The event may then have its own relationship with a museum, or many museums, as several might cooperate in the exhibition's creation and the exhibition may travel to several institutions. So exhibitions and collections are entirely distinct from each other conceptually. But renaming the property to something more symmetric with has works in the collection (P6379), such as "has works in the exhibition" might be a good idea. •   Comment Ok, that all sounds reasonable - I guess the question is whether this property should move forward as is, or is it better to work on the inverse ("has works in the exhibition")? I think in the original direction proposed here may be better, as a given artist could be in thousands of exhibitions, right? ArthurPSmith (talk) 18:01, 18 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That's a good point. The argument can be made that we need both "Exhibited Creator" as a property for the exhibition, and the inverse "has works in the exhibition" as a property for the artist. Because most of our work right now is establishing items for exhibitions with all this data rather than enhancing artist records we've focused on exhibition-centric properties. We will be discussing it with others in the museum-wikidata community and see what they think. JonathanLibrarian (talk) 14:11, 22 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  •   Support Ok, just going to register my support for the current proposal if that's the way you want to proceed. ArthurPSmith (talk) 16:43, 22 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
ArthurPSmith - Hello! what are the next steps/ timeline for this property approval please? We are working to complete a project in a couple of weeks and would love to complete statements with this new property. Thank you so much! DatamuseAttitude (talk) 01:11, 12 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I marked it as ready since there are 3 of us supporting (proposers + me) but somebody else should take the action to actually create this, hopefully soon. ArthurPSmith (talk) 13:12, 12 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
ArthurPSmith Wonderful! Thank you so much! Please let me or JonathanLibrarian know if you need us to provide anything further! DatamuseAttitude (talk) 22:00, 12 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  •   Support Valuable for historical exhibitions where data is incomplete; exhibitions featuring borrowed works; also to denote artist's distinct relationship to an exhibition of their work in a contemporary context. --Artchivist1 (talk) 19:06, 18 April 2022 (UTC)[reply]
