Wikidata:Property proposal/learning outcome

learning outcome edit

This property was requested after extensive consultation with the Wikidata community and experts on ed tech, OER, global and national curriculum, education policy, and digitization. Over the two rounds of the consultation, we received input from 31 individuals representing various global perspectives and areas of expertise to aid in the full implementation of the Wikidata for Education project.

Motivation edit

Learning outcomes refer to the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities that students are expected to acquire as a result of participating in educational programs. They are often used to evaluate the effectiveness of educational programs and to identify areas where improvements are needed. Learning outcomes can be defined for individual courses or for entire educational programs and are typically expressed in terms of observable behaviors or competencies that students are expected to demonstrate. These are the abilities of learners to apply knowledge, skills, and attitudes to solve problems and complete tasks in different contexts.

It’s not allowing any comparison but we want to have it for the sake of completeness of data curriculum on wikidata and as a baseline for a research project to try to standardize the learning outcome for different curriculums around the globe. The research will probably use some NLP and AI techniques to try to standardize these elements in order to be able to compare these. UNESCO is working on this challenging project and we would like to support it by providing the data on our system.

These learning outcomes could be broad or narrow in scope such as the follows:

  • Critical thinking and problem-solving: The ability to analyze information, make connections, and solve problems using various strategies and approaches.
  • Creativity and innovation: The ability to generate and develop new ideas, products, and processes, and to adapt to new situations and challenges.
  • Communication: The ability to communicate effectively in different contexts and with different audiences, using various forms of media and technology.
  • Collaboration and teamwork: The ability to work collaboratively with others to achieve common goals, using effective communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
  • Information and media literacy: The ability to access, evaluate, and use information from various sources, and to communicate and create content using different forms of media and technology.
  • Citizenship and global perspective: The ability to understand and appreciate different cultures, values, and perspectives, and to participate responsibly and effectively in local, national, and global communities.
  • Self-directed learning: The ability to take responsibility for one's own learning, set goals, and develop strategies for lifelong learning and personal growth.

These learning outcomes are integrated into the learning objectives and assessments for each subject area, and are intended to prepare learners for success in a rapidly changing and complex world.

This property will enable us to capture the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities that students are expected to learn as a result of participating in educational programs. When this property is approved, it will allow for us to state and query the learning outcomes of expected for educational courses, reading books, et al to better determine the supposed learning outcomes which could be used for promotion and placement purposes. The Learning Outcome property proposal is a valuable initiative that will provide a standardized and consistent way of capturing the outcomes of learning activities. By doing so, it will enable us to improve educational planning, enhance monitoring and evaluation, and ultimately support the development of effective education systems globally.  – The preceding unsigned comment was added by Dnshitobu (talk • contribs) at 08:47, May 26, 2023‎ (UTC).

Discussion edit

  •   Comment A few thoughts:
1. (minor) this property and the related item should be lower-case as is standard here for English labels of anything that's not a proper noun (i.e. 'learning outcome').
2. I wasn't sure on the "statistics" example, but I see it is declared an instance of "academic major" so that could make sense, yes. In general I'd expect this to be a property for courses of study, or a textbook. Maybe you can be clearer on the domain.
3. The values - ok I can see we may need to create new items for many of these learning outcomes, but shouldn't they often be covered by existing Wikidata items? I wouldn't really want this to result in the creation of huge numbers of new items that are very similar to existing ones. But maybe we don't really have existing items that quite fit the bill? If you could come up with some more concrete examples that fit in to the existing collection of items here maybe that would make me feel more comfortable about this.
In general though this is clear enough on what is intended, thanks. ArthurPSmith (talk) 20:42, 1 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your feedback. We have implemented your suggestion in point 1 and 2. Like we have explained in the motivation, the learning outcomes could refer to specific skills such as reading skills (Q97061931), Creativity (Q113465748), Critical thinking (Q113465749) and could also refer to general competencies.   Done @Dnshitobu, ArthurPSmith: learning outcome (P12006). I am unsure how to further enhance this property, constraints are unclear to me. Please help! Jonathan Groß (talk) 21:45, 31 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Jonathan Groß:   Done, but I strongly recommend to familiarize yourself with the property constraints concept and property creation policy in general as it is very important especially for the property creator, which you are. By the way, thank you for the created property. Regards Kirilloparma (talk) 14:22, 1 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Duly noted. I mostly create properties which I am familiar with, i.e. where I have examples ready. In this instance, no similar property came to mind. You're welcome to step in and let me see how it's done. Best, Jonathan Groß (talk) 18:18, 1 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Jonathan Groß Thank you creatig the property. @ArthurPSmith @Kirilloparma Thanks a lot for all the comments. We are very grateful. Dnshitobu (talk) 16:54, 3 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
