Motivation edit

The National Inventory of Dams is a list of dams maintained by the US Army Corps of Engineers and published every two years. It assigns dams that fit its inclusion criteria (essentially, large or notable dams in the US) a unique identifier, the NIDID, which is a 7-character string beginning with the postal code of the state or territory the dam. The NID is used to provide references to over 500 items on wikidata (often, latitude, longitude, name of operator, etc.) and contains over 91,000 entries. As a work of the US government, its data is in the public domain. One potential drawback of NIDID use is the NID's online database's technical restrictions, which seemingly prevent the generation of stable URLs and asks users to pre-authorize their access by affirming that they are a member of the public. That being said, any human user can easily navigate the NID, and navigation is aided by the unique NIDID number. Access to the database may change in future years, but the NIDIDs will remain stable. As saddle dams and dikes are assigned the same NIDID as the main dam, this item should not have a distinct values constraint, as two dams (a main one and a saddle) may have seperate wikidata items.
