Motivation

A new organization identifier from the Research Organization Registry (ROR). JSON format data can be accessed in the ROR API. An OpenRefine reconilation service is also available. It would be good to have a property to connect Wikidata and ROR IDs. Simon Cobb (User:Sic19 ; talk page) 13:31, 7 May 2019 (UTC)

•  Support although I find this project fairly useless so far - much like OrgRef it is just a copy of existing databases. I don't see the added value compared to GRID. I guess we can still import their ids for the sake of ensuring that Wikidata is strictly more useful than ROR… (We can store their random hashes too, yay!) − Pintoch (talk) 12:22, 18 May 2019 (UTC)

@Sic19, ArthurPSmith, Pintoch, Egon Willighagen: I myself am wondering why the Org Ref initiative is taking so long, especially because author affiliations is the messiest data in publication databases. ROR is supposed to use GRID as only the first data donation, and add governance and sustainability model etc etc. But GRID has grown to 95k which is more than listed for ROR above, and ROR doesn't even show a download? What's going on; and how will we coreference ROR to WD if there's no download? --Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 12:17, 25 May 2019 (UTC)

@Vladimir Alexiev: I was actually on the "ROR community" call this past week; these things do take time mainly because they're trying to work by consensus, not by fiat. Yes it hasn't kept up with GRID - one of the first priorities is working out how to synchronize them going forward, as it really isn't supposed to be simply a copy. @Vladimir Alexiev: It didn't work well for me when I tried it. 90,000+ ROR IDs are in Wikidata now so I probably won't need to use their reconciliation service again. Simon Cobb (User:Sic19 ; talk page) 21:44, 3 June 2019 (UTC)
