Motivation edit

The Smithsonian Open Access (Q106509825) has embarked on releasing more than 3 million digital files under a CC0 license (see portal site here). At the same time, it created a new Archival Resource Key (Q2860403) (Ark) ID for not only record-level assets but file-level assets (more described at their Global Unique identifiers page). This unique identifier allows for better integration with Wikidata at the item level, but also for Structured Data on Commons to the file level.

For reference, similar IDs have been crafted for Louvre Museum ARK ID (P9394) and SNAC ARK ID (P3430). Full disclosure: I currently serve as the Smithsonian Institution Wikimedian at Large and work on tools and processes for sharing between Wikimedia projects and the Smithsonian. -- Fuzheado (talk) 15:01, 15 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
