- Motivation
Wikipedia uses symbology in diagrams used to document the order of battle (Q11167066) on a large number of pages related to military units, conflicts and related topics. In the future, if this property proposal is approved, these diagrams (and others) could be automatically generated from data held within Wikidata. Pixeldomain (talk) 01:58, 30 August 2017 (UTC)
- Discussion
- Question:' How many of these symbols exist? Maybe we should have an item for each. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 18:05, 31 August 2017 (UTC)
- @Pigsonthewing: The specification describes a layer of symbols that are overlayed on top of each other to provide a more detailed description of a unit or piece of equipment. There would be a huge combination of possible symbol codes that could be defined, and I doubt many of the possible combinations would ever be useful. On Wikipedia, this MIL-STD-2525 symbol identification code is used mostly in developing Order of Battle diagrams (organisation chart of units on an operation or exercise) for a small subset of all possible symbols. If the intent is to just create the most commonly used MIL-STD-2525 symbol items on Wikidata with image (P18) and this symbol identification code, I could support that idea. But there could be many variants of symbols possible to describe all the different possible types and configurations of tank (Q12876), and the usage of some symbol modifiers would be debatable/subjective.
