- Motivation
The USCG has a well maintained "Light List" for lighthouses (and navigational lights) in the United States of America (Q30). Information is given on light characteristic, height and range. For other countries we have a rather similar NGA lighthouse ID (P3563). Used in for instance enwiki. Lymantria (talk) 12:28, 21 February 2017 (UTC)
- Discussion
- Why the name "USCG number / USCG Lighthouse ID". I would Support with just "USCG Lighthouse ID". ChristianKl (talk) 17:50, 21 February 2017 (UTC)
- There is not special reason for it. I took "USCG number" from en:Template:Infobox lighthouse, while I agree that "USCG Lighthouse ID" is more like we name things here. I changed the latter to be the main name (USCG number can be added as aka). Lymantria (talk) 23:00, 21 February 2017 (UTC)
- Comment The example does not match allowed values. Nikola (talk) 00:22, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
- My apologies. Corrected. Lymantria (talk) 10:22, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
- Support These guys seem not to have a page per lighthouse, but some PDFs (eg https://www.navcen.uscg.gov/pdf/lightLists/LightList%20V2.pdf) that take 15 minutes to obtain. Furthermore, I'm not sure how often it's used in the listed template (See en:Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Infobox lighthouse. I took the first one en:Baker Island and I can't find a USCG ID, instead I see ARLHS number = BAK-001. @Lymantria: please provide some examples using this number, and comment on "page per". --Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 09:40, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
- I tried to find the example "1-5". From the homepage https://www.navcen.uscg.gov/?pageName=lightlists I clicked on District 5, which is the above PDF. But there's no "Mount Desert" in that PDF. @Lymantria: you see that without good search and split up data, the number is of little use --Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 09:44, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
- @Vladimir Alexiev: Here seems to be some misunderstanding involved. That en:Baker Island does not have a USCG ID is not unexpected, as these ID's cover lighthouses in the United States and Baker Island is not in the United States. These are some examples of pages on enwiki containing the USCG ID: en:Dry Tortugas Light, en:Point San Luis Light, en:Stratford Shoal Light, en:Au Sable Light, and en:Oak Island Light.
Not only English wikipedia uses this number, but it is also listed e.g. at [1] (from The Lighthouse Directory, which is oftens cited as a source in several wikipedias), where you find Mount Desert as 1-0005 - with leading zeroes which are however not used in the original source.
The numbers have two parts seperated by a hyphen: first the volume number, then the number assigned to the lighthouse in that volume. So 1-5 is found in volume 1 and is numbered 5 there. So you did not open the correct volume
It is correct that lights do not have a seperate page each in this source, but I don't see that would be necessary. Its use is not in essence different from NGA lighthouse ID (P3563), which covers lighthouses outside of the USA, is found in different issues of NGA-publications and not on seperate pages. - @Lymantria: Support after your explanation. Maybe add above a bit of info, approx how many of en:Template:Infobox lighthouse articles use it --Vladimir Alexiev (talk) 15:39, 23 February 2017 (UTC)
