Motivation edit
It's frequently occurs that a future product or event will be publicly announced well before the product is available for sale or the event takes place. However, inception (P571) is too vague, since we may want to pick either an earlier date when the development of the entity had already started, or a later date when the entity actually exists.
Discussion edit
- Oppose. Use significant event (P793). --Yair rand (talk) 04:33, 22 May 2019 (UTC)
- You could say that about any of the date properties. This one is somewhat common. Ghouston (talk) 04:54, 22 May 2019 (UTC)
- I added the significant event (P793) statement on Linux kernel (Q14579), for comparison. People are also tempted to misuse other date properties, like the date of first performance (P1191) and publication date (P577) statements on Tesla Roadster (second generation) (Q43253563). Product development is a process, and it's not obvious exactly which dates should be recorded and with which properties. I can't find a previous proposal to introduce an announcement date, although it's mentioned in Wikidata:Property_proposal/Archive/47#P2669 which successfully added another date in the product life cycle. - @Ghouston: See Wikidata:Property proposal/Public presentation - I think that's the same idea, no? And it's been declared ready.. ArthurPSmith (talk) 18:26, 22 May 2019 (UTC)
- @ArthurPSmith: Thanks, it does seem to be identical apart from the naming. I guess this one can be closed as a duplicate. Ghouston (talk) 23:33, 22 May 2019 (UTC)
