Motivation

Many concepts have multiple names, but currently we can't specify which name is the subject of named after (P138), name in kana (P1814), Revised Hepburn romanization (P2125), etc. --Okkn (talk) 10:54, 28 April 2018 (UTC)

Discussion

  •   Comment This concept is very useful for the names of clothing. In slouch hat (Q3750832), I have handled it by listing <name> in <language> qualified hy <named after>. I am not sure which approach would be better. - PKM (talk) 20:02, 28 April 2018 (UTC)

  •   Question What happens if the P138 value has several names?

  • @Jura1: The example given shows two names for the same item, each one gets a different qualifier. Is that what you mean? --Micru (talk) 14:19, 30 April 2018 (UTC)
    • It could that " Robert James Graves" was also known as "Bob Tombstone" and one wanted to know after which of his names it was named.

      • That seems quite rare, but even in the case that it would happen, the value of "applies to name" already gives a strong indication about which of his names it was named after.--Micru (talk) 14:55, 30 April 2018 (UTC)
        • Couldn't we say the same for the opposite direction? I'm curious to know what statistics leads you say that this is quite rare. Here is one that could need it: Q16551#P138

      • That's a good point. If we want to solve the problem, we may need to create another qualifier to show which name is the value of named after (P138). --Okkn (talk) 16:08, 30 April 2018 (UTC)
  •   Support since I encountered a similar issue recently. But I'm just wondering that should we only add the names in the official/native language(s), or should we add translations as well?--Stevenliuyi (talk) 18:36, 1 May 2018 (UTC)

@Stevenliuyi, Jura1, Micru, ديفيد عادل وهبة خليل 2, Okkn, PKM:   Done: applies to name (P5168). − Pintoch (talk) 12:24, 17 May 2018 (UTC)
