Support I believe it is better to move the image to this property than to deprecated rank the image of a cosplayer dressed as that character. Afaz (talk) 15:10, 23 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Where exactly do we draw the line between a depiction of a character and a cosplay? Consider this image of someone in a SpongeBob suit: File:Spongebob_hugs_a_fan_(3689068930).jpg -wd-Ryan (Talk/Edits) 22:32, 23 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
On Commons we just use cosplay as shorthand for costumes of characters. Otherwise, it would get too granular Trade (talk) 22:08, 24 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  Done @Trade, Wd-Ryan: Created as image of cosplay (P13632). Infrastruktur (talk) 12:08, 10 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion on the merits of keeping existing P18 claims

edit
Comment - by massively moving files from P18 to this new property, you are basically removing those images from Wikipedia articles, because the infoboxes look for P18, not for this new property. Not sure if that was anticipated? Jcb (talk) 15:06, 11 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Well, since it's not an image of the actual character that's arguably a quality improvement. Infrastruktur (talk) 16:57, 11 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe, but in practice Wikipedia communities prefer a cosplay image over no image. Now Wikidata is deciding for Wikipedia what would be considered quality improvement. Jcb (talk) 21:42, 11 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see it that way. Reusers matter. Before, a wiki might add a poor quality cosplay image for P18 if it was the only one available, and effectively make the decision of what picture to use for a number of other wikis. Now wikis get more control in what they want to display or not. By putting back P18 images for cosplayers you effectively take away the individual wikis possibility of choosing for themselves.
Depending on how strongly you feel about keeping P18 statements where P13632 statements are added, you can leave a message on Wikidata:Project chat and the equivalent on your local wiki and ask them to voice their opinion here, but be careful not to solicit votes. Infrastruktur (talk) 06:16, 12 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Wikidata shouldn't be forced into subpar modeling and creating poor data simply because local Wikipedia projects can't be bothered to update their infoboxes and nor to keep up to date with Sister project property proposals Trade (talk) 22:38, 12 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
How did you communicate to local Wikipedia projects about the change and about the impact on their articles? If you didn't, how are they supposed to know? Jcb (talk) 10:58, 13 July 2025 (UTC)[reply]
