Motivation

Items on lighthouses have been filled with data on the emitted light using e.g. light characteristic (P1030), lighthouse range (P2929), and luminous intensity (P3041), but it is not possible to add the quite important data of its visibility sectors. This proposal makes it possible. As the example shows, color (P462), is an important qualifier to be used, but as there are also lights with sector restrictions with just white light, I intend not make it mandatory. Discussion

Comment I thought the light characteristic (P1030) already covers this. In any case, the documentation of that property is not good enough, lacking a web source to instructions and explanations for example. Also, if a volunteer would only have access to the sector information, she would not be able too give the full light characteristic (P1030) value (if it also contains the sector information, which is unclear to me.) If we create a new property, how do we combine signal, sector and color (maybe also range)? Or just have them separately? – Susanna Ånäs (Susannaanas) (talk) 09:05, 30 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Susannaanas: It is not usual to include ranges in light characteristic (P1030), the paragraph "Abbreviations" of en:Light characteristic explains what is usual here. (Perhaps indeed the instructions should be better, but that should not be discussed here.) At that page "additional parameters are sometimes added", range and focal height, are mentioned, but for those we have focal height (P2923) and lighthouse range (P2929). The light sector is usually given seperately, see for instance NGA 114. I would welcome - and use - a seperate property for that, therefore my proposal.   Support OK! I'm all for it! It's a key missing property. – Susanna Ånäs (Susannaanas) (talk) 10:07, 30 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]
