Motivation

The need to split sourcing circumstances (P1480) was discussed in this RfC; reviewers are encouraged to read that discussion. To summarize: sourcing circumstances (P1480) has long attracted disputes over its allowed values, because the historically accepted values fall into two types, which should be handled separately:

  1. Values that describe the circumstances and accuracy of the source: circa (Q5727902), presumably (Q18122778), possibly approximate value (Q21097017), unspecified calendar (Q18195782), misprint (Q21096955), miscalculation (Q21096985), etc. These are the values for which sourcing circumstances (P1480) was originally meant, and they should remain with it.
  2. Values that describe the underlying nature of the statement itself; i.e., they place conditions on its truth value. These are the values, listed above, for which the new property is proposed.

There are other ways to split up the values currently given to sourcing circumstances (P1480), but this rubric seems far and away the clearest. Swpb (talk) 12:54, 20 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
