Motivation edit

Documenting where a service like a website is hosted would be useful. Lectrician1 (talk) 02:27, 24 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion edit

  •   Comment Does it have to be a "service"? Does it absolutely have to be "electronic"? What are the downsides to broadening this to simply "hosted at"? Maybe having impact with many things that are "hosted" such as event (Q1656682) and usage of location (P276)? Does the concept of "hosted" imply a "customer" on one end and "provider" on the other? Always? Does "hosted" apply elsewhere besides events and services? --Thadguidry (talk) 04:30, 28 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    @Thadguidry
    I want to restrict this property to the "electronic hosting" definition of hosting for constraint reasons. Therefore I do not want to broaden the definition. Also, most event (Q1656682) items already use location (P276) and I don't think we need a dedicated property for that.
    When searching dictionaries, I could not find any other definitions for "hosting" other than the event and service definitions. Lectrician1 (talk) 16:09, 1 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    @Lectrician1 But if it is "electronic hosting", then how can the values be geographic locations? I think the values would be a different type/class? I think what you are trying to do is say "electronically hosted by an organization/business located in this geographic location"? And not really asking for that organization/business to be required as a qualifier, but optional? Can this be documented more in the summary? --Thadguidry (talk) 16:25, 1 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  •   Support I support a property of this nature but would suggest it be named or have aliases "broadcast location", "communications originate from", etc. This property would be a sub-property of location (P276) and be for the physical location (data centre, radio tower, etc) where communications (Internet service, radio station or TV network) are transmitted from. operating area (P2541) could then be used for the geographic area (or countries in the case of Internet services using geo-blocking (Q19853509)) where the communications are intended to be received. --Dhx1 (talk) 23:00, 30 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    That's a good idea! I hadn't thought about radio and TV communications. That should work for this property. Lectrician1 (talk) 16:13, 1 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
