- Motivation
I just started contributing to Wikidata. With my interest being Military history, I started working on INS Vikrant item was unable to find the status of the ship by a glance. The status may be learned by referring the start and end date qualifiers of country or operator. But that'll just tell us about whether the ship in service or out of service, not the other things as mentioned above. So I feel this required to know what really the ship is up to. I suggest the community to give me more inputs on the allowable values. Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk) 07:18, 19 September 2017 (UTC)
- Discussion
- Comment in general "status" properties are not a good idea as they are guaranteed to be valid for only a limited time period. Usually in wikidata we handle this with events and dates - for example dissolved, abolished or demolished date (P576) could be used to indicate when a ship was scrapped (or if the date is unknown the unknown value can be used). Or more generally significant event (P793) allows any specific event in the history of an item to be indicated - start of construction, service start, etc. ArthurPSmith (talk) 17:05, 19 September 2017 (UTC)
- @ArthurPSmith: Thanks for letting me, that suffices. --Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talk) 10:14, 24 September 2017 (UTC)
