Motivation edit
Cite Q and similar templates expect that title (P1476) property would be the name of multivolume edition. Although many multivolume works doesn't have volume names and have only volume numbers, so volume name in such cases would contain the same name as the multivolume work name. Storing volume title in the title (P1476) property makes confusion with items that have multivolume title in the title (P1476) property.
Discussion edit
Would not subtitle (P1680) work for this? Solidest (talk) 21:54, 28 February 2023 (UTC)
- No. It is related to the title (P1476) property and must be used in the same context. See United Nations peacekeeping in the Congo: 1960-1964; an analysis of political, executive and military control. Volume 1. Summary and conclusions (Q115926177), for example. And also see comparison of common patterns: Wikidata talk:WikiProject Books#Volume title. D6194c-1cc (talk) 09:58, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
Comment not in favour Typically you should be citing the parent work, and citing a volume number as a qualifier, as has been done for thousands of works. Works perfectly well for "cite Q". Citing an item for a specific volume seems unnecessary. — billinghurst sDrewth 05:26, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
- We do have subject named as (P1810) which could be used, and then train "cite Q" to read that if present, or pushed. — billinghurst sDrewth 05:30, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
- This property might be misleading. Is it whole work name or just volume name? D6194c-1cc (talk) 07:41, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
- Also, I found another problem. Issues have titles, too, and their structure is the same as that for volumes. So I probably will use object named as (P1932) for the volume/issue number and subject named as (P1810) for the volume/issue title. But they can be only used as qualifiers. So it's rather temporary solution, since those properties can be used only as qualifiers. D6194c-1cc (talk) 07:23, 2 July 2023 (UTC)
- Volume has specific google books id, URL (if it is in open access), ISBN, pages count and other properties that can be used by citing template. Citing whole multivolume edition is not always convenient. Although Red Data Book of Russia, volume "Animals" (2nd edition) (Q115189432) is an example of book that doesn't have multivolume edition. This volume published independently from other one and have no volume number. D6194c-1cc (talk) 07:39, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

- Support, an important property for literature.--Arbnos (talk) 13:50, 11 January 2024 (UTC)
- Comment before going forward or not with this property I'd very much like that the modelling of multi-volumes books be standardized in Wikidata. To my knowledge it isn't, or at least Wikidata:WikiProject_Books doesn't say anything about it and the searching of archived discussions within the projet didn't yield anything definitive. Currently editions are either single Qids with number of parts of this work (P2635) stating the number of volume or numerous Qid refering (or not) to each other and to the parent work. --Jahl de Vautban (talk) 12:16, 25 January 2024 (UTC)
- Not done, @Solidest, billinghurst, D6194c-1cc, Arbnos, Jahl de Vautban: no consensus of proposed property at this time. Also, didn't response the comments above. Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 06:06, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
- @ZI_Jony: Sorry, didn't seen the topic at WikiProject Books. The problem was already discussed here: Wikidata_talk:WikiProject_Books/2023#Volume_title. That's why I've created this property proposal. Currently, I use the subject named as (P1810) property for volume titles in this module: ru:Module:CiteGost. The disadvantage is that I cannot determine the language of the volume title. Also, this way I cannot specify the subtitle of the volume separately from the title. Using the separate volume title property would benefit because the subtitle (P1680) property may be used as a qualifier. D6194c-1cc (talk) 07:08, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
- @D6194c-1cc: IMO, you better to use subject named as (P1810), and to determine the language of the volume title you could use language of work or name (P407) as a qualifier. Regards, ZI Jony (Talk) 07:17, 8 April 2024 (UTC)
